When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

We have black out blinds and black out curtains in my son's room 😂😂. We just have black out blinds in our room and standard blinds in the living room and kitchen.

daisypond · 09/05/2021 19:39

I have curtains in every room except kitchen and bathroom. I love curtains. Vertical blinds are horrid and surely very dated.

PascalHey · 09/05/2021 19:40

Blackout blinds and blackout curtains in all of the bedrooms here.

Elouera · 09/05/2021 19:40

Yes- black out curtains in the bedrooms. 1 room also had wooden, shutters which were there prior to getting curtains.

There is a difference between a 1970's floral pattern on curtains, or some ghastly paisley/retro/neon coloured curtains!

When you have guests, do they go into your bedrooms and comment on your curtains or lack there of?? I think not. I'd prefer a decent nights sleep over any issue with the curtains not being 'modern' Hmm

takemetothelakes · 09/05/2021 19:40

We have wooden venetian blinds in the bedrooms. They're not blackout blinds but they shut the light out pretty well.

I hate curtains, they often look untidy and get dusty. I like the neatness of blinds. I'd have shutters if I could afford it.

CMOTDibbler · 09/05/2021 19:40

We have blackout curtains in all the bedrooms. I like a totally dark room to sleep in. We have vertical blinds in the sitting room as it is a beggar of a window to fit anything else and I'm not keen on them there, but needs must

Justa47 · 09/05/2021 19:41

@pearpickingporky84

Roman blinds

1Morewineplease · 09/05/2021 19:42

@Slimmingstar

I have just windows. I love the light in the morning - doesn’t wake me early, but I wake feeling refreshed. Waking in a dark room always leaves me groggy.
The same. No window dressing at all.
NewlyGranny · 09/05/2021 19:42

Vertical blinds are for dental surgeries and solicitors' offices, sorry! Nasty, boring institutional things.

Stylish Roman blinds are what we have in all our bedrooms; I made them, but obviously most people don't. For a nursery or child's bedroom, blackout roller blinds are the way to go, with funky curtains over them.

swampytiggaa · 09/05/2021 19:43

I have curtains in my bedroom but never close them. The light doesn’t bother me and I like to look at the stars before I go to sleep

Kids have vertical blinds in their bedrooms as they are on the front of the house. I hate them. They’re a hangover from the previous owners. I’d like the wooden ones but this year we are spending spare cash on a new bathroom instead.

Spanglybangles · 09/05/2021 19:43

Blackout Roman blinds and super thermal lined full length curtains in our room. Blackout rollers with blackout curtains for kids rooms and wood Venetians and lined curtains in living room. Rollers in kitchen and bathroom. Curtains are crucial I think to avoid a room feeling cold and echoey, also to block out more light. I agree with others that vertical blinds are a no go in a house...we removed them from all over our house when we bought it.

DPotter · 09/05/2021 19:47

blackout blinds and curtains are a must with small children.

I also find curtains keep the room warmer than blinds as well.

Is your DH simply saying No as he doesn't want to put up the rails? In which case - either do them yourself or get an odd job person in to do the job. If you wait for DH they'll never go up.

To me vertical blinds are more for an office than a bedroom - just think of all those lovely floral patterns you could choose - Wink,Wink

Your husband has absolutely no idea what he's talking about, and sorry, but vertical blinds are awful. Get rid of them and just have blackout curtains with grommets on rods. Very simple, easy to manage, and easy to clean.

I completely agree he has no idea what he’s talking about! I think he can’t be arsed with hassle of getting them put up (even though o said I’d pay someone to put the rail up) and has decided this is an excuse!

We have curtains or blinds depending on the room. Can we see a pic of these blinds? I’m visualising a hospital room, with NHS blue fittings

reluctantbrit · 09/05/2021 19:48

We have a mix. Vertical blinds in DH's office. Blackout roller blinds in the guest bedroom as there is no space for hanging curtains and as it is my office I sit in a way that in Winter and early Spring I have the sun in my eyes.

We have curtains in the master bedroom, proper blackout ones, and in the living room. We have bay windows, I hate blinds, we removed all of them when we moved in 11 years ago as they blocked 1/3 of the window permaently and just look ugly.

DD has sheer gauze curtains at her french doors during the day and blackout curtains for night. Blinds are only at her Velux roof windows.

We live in proper outer London surburbia and most of my neighbours have curtains. The only alternatives here are wooden shutters, they made rooms really dark.

WorriedMillie · 09/05/2021 19:51

We have Roman blinds, they’re not black out, but they’re dark, so they do block out some of the light
I’d happily do without and I don’t lower them when OH is away. We’re not overlooked and I like waking early

Funnyface1 · 09/05/2021 19:52

Curtains and blinds in all bedrooms. My dc sleep well, always have, youngest is 4.

Goatsgetmygoat · 09/05/2021 19:52

For the love of baby Jesus get blackout curtains in your kids room - or force your DH to do the 5am wake ups at the height of summer

I know, we actually had nice curtains (that we choose and bought ourselves) in our last house, I have no idea where this sudden objection to curtains came from Hmm
I’ve just done a quick survey of the properties that a local estate agent puts on Facebook and 9/10 have bedroom curtains.
I’m going curtain shopping online tonight wether he likes it or not!

Curtains went up in my bedroom in my newbuild before I built the bed. I need it to be pitch black to sleep. We have blinds too- I think curtains finish a room nicely, floor length ones are in at the moment. We had never hung a curtain pole before but it’s not as hard as it sounds if you have the things already you need a level, a drill, plasterboard plugs and one of those things that beep when somethings behind the wall (the metal window frame thing was where we originally started drilling). There’s loads of YouTube videos.

Funnyface1 · 09/05/2021 19:53

Just read your update. Putting curtain rails up is a hassle? It's a 5 minute job. Would be a bit silly to pay someone for that.

LemonRoses · 09/05/2021 19:55

I can’t abide bedrooms without decent blackout lined curtains, blinds or shutters. I know some like being woken by the rising sun, but I’m not one of them.

thetemptationofchocolate · 09/05/2021 19:55

Yes I have bedroom curtains because I have arsehole neighbours who have outside lights which are pointed right at my bedroom. The lights go on and off all bloody night.

AlmostSummer21 · 09/05/2021 19:56

You have vertical blinds and he has the nerve to object to curtains 🤣🤣🤣

funnylittlefloozie · 09/05/2021 19:57

Has he not been into any other people's houses recently? Most people have curtains! Idiot.
