When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

Fitted blackout vertical blinds. No curtains. It doesn't fit the room.

purplebatbear · 09/05/2021 21:48

Curtains and blackout liners plus blackout roller blind. No wonder your son isn't sleeping well.

Wegobshite · 09/05/2021 21:50

We have french - plantation type full length shutters all through the house on every window
But In the bedrooms I have black out roller blinds as even though I have the shutters they let through a lot of light
I haven’t had curtains in my house for years so I’m with you DP on his view of curtains 😂

Evenstar · 09/05/2021 21:52

We have black out roller blinds and curtains in all the bedrooms

SunshineCake · 09/05/2021 21:53

What an idiot. He can't know what everyone else does.

We have a blind and curtains.

NoBetterthanSheShouldBe · 09/05/2021 21:56

I do like vertical blinds and have them downstairs - they let a lot of light into a very overlooked house. All the bedrooms have blackout curtains and it still takes some adjustment to sleep through random headlights and security lights flashing at the margins.

AMillionMilesAway · 09/05/2021 21:56

I love the cosy feel of a room with the curtains closed!

Brownteddybear · 09/05/2021 22:00

Get the curtains and don't listen to your dh. Who cares what's modern and what is in fashion, curtains work and make a room cosy to sleep in and your ds will have better sleeps as will you.

Always find vertical blinds a bit weird in a home. Remind me of a 90s office! We have curtains everywhere, blinds in the conservatory and kitchen/utility and both curtains and blinds in the dining room and office.

Saltyslug · 09/05/2021 22:04

Those blinds are awful. Sorry op

tealandteal · 09/05/2021 22:07

We have a roller blind in DS room and a curtains in ours. If you want to see if curtains will make a difference, try wiping the window with a damp sponge and then sticking tin foil to the glass. This will block out all the light and you can see what affect this has.

sansou · 09/05/2021 22:15

Curtains with black out lining for all the bedrooms.

pearpickingporky84 · 09/05/2021 22:16

That’s 3 curtain poles and 3 sets of curtains ordered (for us and both DCs), DH has even agreed to contact a handyman to put the poles up Smile. We’ve been having this debate on and off for 2 years, just before I posted my thread he nearly had me persuaded to buy a bed tent for the 5 year old instead, so glad I posted here!

Blackout blinds and blackout curtains in all bedrooms - much better sleep!

crazylikechocolate · 09/05/2021 22:36

No curtains anywhere here , just white wooden Venetian blinds , works with our decor .

Bourbonic · 09/05/2021 22:37

No, I hate curtains. I have wooden slatted blinds.

Cherrysoup · 09/05/2021 22:42

Ime, I sleep longer if the room is very dark. My DH does shifts, so we got a blackout cassette fitted, it slides down in a fixed plastic guide, we also have plantation shutters.

I must say, there’s a blackout temporary curtain thing with suckers to fit-I think it’s designed for babies’ rooms-it was more effective than what we have, must get in the loft and find it. I think your dh is being silly, of course a darker room will improve sleep. Surely that’s why there are so many options for babies/children’s rooms.

Ivy48 · 09/05/2021 22:43

Depends on your home. I have curtains and the apparently hated vertical blinds. But I’m in an old terrace house on a main road. Vertical blinds give us privacy and a lot
Of light in the day time. Roller blinds don’t have the same effect in our house, neither do the slatted ones. Each to their own but I say blinds and curtains are essential to almost all rooms

Cherrysoup · 09/05/2021 22:44

DH has even agreed to contact a handyman to put the poles up

I promise you, it’s a piece of cake to drill in holes for rawl plugs/screws, you really don’t need a handyman! I did ours when I put up curtains in the kitchen (big room, 3 windows)

RhubarbCustardy · 09/05/2021 22:46

Blinds here but they do tend to let in a little light around the edges. I know some people have both at the same window to solve this. Nets are old fashioned but not not other curtains surely?

VestaTilley · 09/05/2021 22:49

Curtains and blinds here; thick, dark curtains in DS’s room. They exclude draughts, muffle noise and keep heat in- I wouldn’t be without them!

Get lined ones though to properly exclude light.

Feckauras · 09/05/2021 22:51

We have wood venetian blinds in every room bar the kitchen which has a roller blind. The only curtain I have is in the hallway in front of the glass panel next to the front door.

OhRene · 09/05/2021 22:53

Curtains and vertical blinds for us. Blinds are nice and modern looking from outside, curtains keep the light out. DH does night shifts every couple of weeks so they're needed.

MustBeTheWine · 09/05/2021 22:54

We don't have curtains in bedrooms but we have brilliant black out blinds that completely eliminate any light seeping in.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2021 22:57

I had no idea that curtains were considered so old fashioned. I'm not getting rid of mine. They keep the house warm in winter.
