To ask of you have curtains in your bedrooms?

When we moved into our new build house 3 years ago we had vertical blinds fitted to all the windows. I had planned to get curtains in all of the bedrooms eventually but DH thinks this is unnecessary and that curtains aren’t ‘modern’.
We have a 5 year old DS who wakes early each morning and I think the light is contributing so am keen to get curtain rails up and curtains bought but DH is insistent that ‘no-one’ has curtains as is driving me up the walls by refusing to accept that the light might be making the early mornings worse!

We have blinds in every room, our DS who's 2 has blackout blinds in his bedroom. Maybe a blackout blind for your ds's room would be a good idea 😊

TalbotAMan · 09/05/2021 20:15

Roller blinds, though we're thinking of fitting curtains. DC have curtains.

RampantIvy · 09/05/2021 20:17

I hate vertical blinds - like sleeping in an office. They are cold looking , don't block the light and just aren't cosy at all

This ^^ is exactly why we have curtains. My sister has blinds in her house and it always feels so cold. Curtains keep the heat in during cold weather.

RainyDay2020 · 09/05/2021 20:17

Ah fuck it - you’re a bad influence OP....I might just buy some curtains and rails, get them delivered and get a nice handy man to come and put them up while DH is at work next week and I’m WFH Grin

ufucoffee · 09/05/2021 20:18

Vertical blinds are very, very old fashioned. Putting up curtain rails is really easy, I did it myself for years as a single parent and I am rubbish at DIY.

Fixitup2 · 09/05/2021 20:20

Kids have blackout roller blinds. We have wooden Venetians and curtains

safariboot · 09/05/2021 20:22

We have a Venetian blind in one bedroom, but that's only because it used to be a studentey study-bedroom. Those vertical blinds look crap.

BruteForce · 09/05/2021 20:24

Blackout Romans for us. They're warmer in winter and keep the sun out in summer.

It's a mix around here. Half the houses have horizontal slats in some form or other, the other have have verticals. Verticals are dated but also look so much better than some of the horizontals in the small windows. Some of the wider slatted blinds that are opaque/translucent look awful in the one house that has them.

Keep them up long enough and they'll be deemed fashionable again. But in the meantime get blackouts up as well.

Anonmousse · 09/05/2021 20:24

I made the mistake of ordering eyelet curtains with blackout lining for DS. It's kind of pointless because the light comes through the eyelets. Dd has a blind.
I dont like vertical blinds and the only residential house I've ever seen them in was in the 1980s. Weve got them at work and they are a PITA!
Dont mind Venetian, roller blinds or roman blinds in bedrooms.

Pinkpaisley · 09/05/2021 20:27

We have motorized blackout curtains.

pickingdaisies · 09/05/2021 20:28

I had to have a similar battle. Our house had vertical blinds in all the bedrooms when we moved in. DH insisted that curtains were old fashioned, so we put Venetian blinds up. They don't block out the light from our neighbours' security light, so I eventually got curtains. My need for sleep trumps dh's dodgy design ideas! ( My latest stealth move, once I had the curtains up, was to remove the Venetian blind and put up a plain net. The horror!)

pearpickingporky84 · 09/05/2021 20:29

@RainyDay2020 do it! Part of my problem is that DH works from home and I don’t!
Although DH has finally agreed that maybe we should get curtains, partly my little survey of estate agent pics, partly this thread and I think partly catching himself on being an eejit... Grin. Thanks for the replies!

We have shutters in the bedrooms and living rooms but also swagged curtains that are just for show. We only close the curtains if it’s very cold or if the children’s rooms are too bright in the summer.
The windows look too large and bare with only shutters.
Please don’t let him get vertical blinds!

OldTinHat · 09/05/2021 20:32

I have black out roller blinds in every window with voile panels instead of nets hanging off a curtain pole like traditional curtains would.

We had those blinds in a rental property. I just got some blackout curtains from Dunelm for about £40. Get the curtains OP, the blinds look shit.

PattyPan · 09/05/2021 20:38

We have blackout curtains. We had roller blinds in our previous home which were crap. Curtains are great for conserving warmth vs blinds too, we have extra thermal linings in our draughty rooms and it makes a difference.

Your husband is BVU - vertical blinds are definitely the most dated window covering!

BillMasheen · 09/05/2021 20:40

I really wouldn’t want vertical blinds in a house with a child, unless they are the safer kind. Even then, curtains are safer.

And, yes Vertical blinds are fresh and Modern assuming he’s living in 1991. have you rag rolled the walls yet OP?

HugeBowlofChips · 09/05/2021 20:41

vertical blinds = dental surgery
sorry
does he actually know anything about the different designs that curtains come in, or is he imagining some stately home swags and festoons red damask creation?
wave curtains are very neat and tidy eg

To ask of you have curtains in your bedrooms?
Allgirlskidsanddogs · 09/05/2021 20:44

Curtains, lined and interlined, every window in the house. All upstairs are new in the last 15 years, ,OST of downstairs are older, some over 30 years old!

Molehillfromamountain · 09/05/2021 20:46

DC both have blackout roller blinds and curtains. (DS is still an early riser)
We have a roller blind and blackout velux in our room but that's only because we have an odd shaped ceiling and curtains wouldn't fit.

sbhydrogen · 09/05/2021 20:47

We have Venetian blinds at the moment, but I want to get curtains. DH is fine with this, but we need to decide on a colour scheme first.

wishiwasabraverman · 09/05/2021 20:48

Curtains and blackout roller blinds

Londonmummy66 · 09/05/2021 20:52

I have to say I really don't like those blinds - look like an office.

I have 2 windows in my bedroom so I treated myself to cream silk curtains that the rods slot into - I love the way the light plays on them and makes the silk glow in the evening when they are drawn - makes me smile every night.

TheCrowening · 09/05/2021 20:52

We have vertical blinds in our garden room as there’s no room for a curtain pole, but I’d not have them in the main rooms in the house. I’m fond of our curtains. Lots of design choice and easy to change.
