Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Kale 🤢🤮

Bertiebiscuit · 10/05/2021 21:10

Banana bread - I love cake and love bananas but thus is vile - I don't think cooking bananas is a good idea - except for fritters

marktayloruk · 10/05/2021 21:13

Found out what peanut butter and jelly sandwich meant , tried it - once was enough.

kennycat · 10/05/2021 21:34

I honestly like all food. Everything is delicious to me. However The leek and potato soup my mother in law made the other week I found utterly horrible. It’s like my taste buds knew I didn’t want to be there!!

KittyKatChonky · 10/05/2021 21:35

How could I forget the worst - green plums bought in the Chinese supermarket. Even my husband spat it out and that man can eat anything

Bojheybuddy · 10/05/2021 21:39

Pistachio ice cream 🤢

Livoey · 10/05/2021 21:43

I used to have a housemate who couldn’t stand ketchup to the extent that she couldn’t even look at it. If it was in the communal fridge she would wretch. She was lovely, entirely normal otherwise.

mrsbyers · 10/05/2021 22:21

Morrison’s sweet and salty rice cakes

BumCat · 10/05/2021 22:21

@WouldbeVa haha! I love little moons. They are a bit like testicles, I suppose. You even get two in a pack! Hasn’t put me off, though. Most delicious testes ever. 😂

MuddlingThrough1724 · 10/05/2021 22:35

Pak Choi. Remember when it was suddenly all the rage. Tastes like raw potato. 🤢

Ihatesalad · 10/05/2021 22:41

@poundoflard — yep food in usa-I’ve only had good healthy meals in California- and some of that was terrific—-mash potato, I must admit to buying it in a box here in Denmark (used to buy M&S chilled in uk ) knorrs is really good -

@OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow

Marmite peanut butter. Love marmite. Love peanut butter. No brainer. No, it’s rank. Ranker than rank. Even the dog turned her nose up. Also, what’s the deal with white asparagus? My dd is in Amsterdam and they go wild for it. For me it looks like something that grew in a dank cellar.
They are something that grew in a dank cellar. You cover them with so the asparagus doesn’t get sunlight as it grows out if the ground, it’s called blanching I think.

So just green asparagus that hasn’t been able to photosynthesise.

Crayfishforyou · 11/05/2021 05:35

Avocado. I ordered smashed avocado on toast when it first became trendy.
It was like fungus the bogeyman had shat it.
The stuff also spreads out and coats the inside of your mouth so there’s literally no escape from the taste.

white asparagus is lovely.
green asparagus is a bit meh...

what's really dissapointing is those chocolate milk drinks. there is never enough chocolate in there. same for the serving instruction on chocolate powder. makes for very pale, limp milk with a hint of flavour.

BeautifulandWilfulandDead · 11/05/2021 08:04

Cottage cheese. Curdled, lumpy milk? It's just wrong.

marton4710 · 11/05/2021 10:27

That is so funny. Just out of hospital and needed that. Thank you for the laugh

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 11/05/2021 11:08

@Crayfishforyou that was my first thought about avocadoes but I have since learned to love them. One of my favourite breakfast/lunch snack meals is mashed avo on a nutty brown bread toast. You do need to add salt and pepper to taste and have nicely ripe (but not overripe) fruits. FWIW though, I recently tried poached eggs with avocado - that was disgusting in combo. It was in a supposedly gastro pub. The avocado tasted as if it had been mashed hours (if not the previous day) earlier and was slightly 'off'. Yuk!

CounsellorTroi · 11/05/2021 11:13

I tried a white chocolate Options once. It was disgusting, like thin watered down custard.

I had a white hot chocolate from Costa once and yeah, it kind of smelled like baby sick.
Chanjer · 11/05/2021 11:44

Oysters. For some reason every time I'm faced with them I think I'll give em a try. The first one leaves me undecided the second one confirms they're fucking revolting and makes me want to die

Hot chocolate sachets are one thing the Americans do get right. Every Christmas a friend in New York sends me these lovely assorted sachets. I think she gets them in quite a swanky food store. Whenever I go into a British shop and all they have is over-sweet Cadbury's or watery bloody Options, I am so crestfallen.
skybluee · 11/05/2021 12:53

I love Pizza Express pizza from the supermarket! It's overpriced but sometimes is on offer. I love the margherita one. You do have to put it with something - I put it with chopped avocado, green leaves, tomatoes, coleslaw, parsley etc. It's probably my favourite pizza, sad to see people don't like it. I do prefer more 'simple' things though so that might be it (not a fan of a huge mixture of flavours).

NowRightHere · 11/05/2021 13:00

Blue Stilton - I have no problem with what the blue is and would really like to like it, as I love most other cheeses and it’s often part of a cheese board, but one taste and I need to urgently wash my mouth out.

Also halloumi, it just tastes of lamb, which I’ve always hated.

Already about the fruit tea, smell amazing and then taste of nothing.

OwlIsBeingAnOwl · 11/05/2021 13:16

I think the Pizza Express pizzas are among the best supermarket ones. (Need more mozzarella tho imo!)

I had this flavoured coffee sachet thing which I didn't realise had powdered creamer in it - the coffee wasn't too bad but the creamer was vile, had to chuck out the whole cup because it was like drinking grease.
