Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Vegan cheese - Sainsbury’s mature cheddar - put it in roast tomato quiche for bring and share. Just no. Put it in work fridge. Stank out work fridge and all contents. Stank out work kitchen. Stank out work. Never again.

Papaya with lots of lime squeezed over it is delicious. It totally transforms it from a bit sickly and tasteless to something amazing. My friend who grew up in Kenya gave me one like that many years before you could get them in supermarkets and I was amazed at how wonderful it was. I’d not have known about the lime if she hadn’t told me that’s how they eat them where she grew up.

Salad cream. Devils spunk.

@CityCommuter

When I first went on holiday to the USA as a teenager in the 1990's I couldn't wait to try Hershey's chocolate that I'd seen on lots of American TV shows and films...

Anyway after the first bite I was sure it had gone off as the taste is so odd it can only be described as tasting like vomit! That's the nearest description to it... The chocolate hadn't gone off, it actually really does taste like that (to anyone who hasn't tried it yet btw).... I couldn't and still can't understand how my American relatives go wild for this taste and love that chocolate... I'm NOT exaggerating btw, it's truly yucky!

hahaha, thats exactly what it tastes like. I've never understood the fascination with it.
the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 17:32

I can't eat baked beans or tomato based products anymore either. Tried all kinds of makes too.
Not the same as they used to be!

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 10/05/2021 17:36

Ketchup makes me have. Even the smell of it.

Fightingon · 10/05/2021 17:37

That slimming world meal is awful though I couldn’t even force myself after one mouthful!
Not even sure who signs off on those meals 🤢

PiccalilliChilli · 10/05/2021 17:37

Tofu
All Linda McCartney stuff. There are better brands of veggie convenience food out there. Tasteless tosh.
Baileys.
Jack and coke. Gross!
Most Japanese food. Went to a highly rated Japanese place in Aldgate East. I didn't like most of the bento box they gave me. I did like the sushi.
Five Guys burgers.What an expensive let down.

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 17:40

Five guys is awful and very expensive. I'd
Rather buy Sainsbury's burgers and make my own ones. Much cheaper too

hellosunshine9 · 10/05/2021 17:40

M&S king prawn risotto

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 17:42

Maybe the slim fast meals are made so horrible and tasteless so people don't eat them and lose weight that way ? .. just a thought.

I first had a Five Guys in London a few years ago - food for me and the 2 kids cost £37 😱 it was nice but not £37 worth of nice. I'd rather have a fish supper from somewhere else TBH for half the price
aliloandabanana · 10/05/2021 17:44

Sugar puffs/honey puffs/any puffed wheat cereal - crisp and covered in sweet stuff, so should be fine, but put it in milk and it goes weirdly slimy! The taste is awful too, but I might be able to cope with it if it weren't for the sliminess.

@CallMeCleo

Saw a recipe on a facebook page for a nice keto side dish. You mix up sliced leeks with Boursin cheese and put blobs of the mixture into a buttered muffin tray. Sprinkle with cheddar and bake in the oven. The poster showed a photo and they looked yummy!

Later I spent £1 on leeks, £4 on two packs of Boursin and £5 on a non stick muffin tray. Followed the recipe exactly. Seemed a bit pricy at £10 for 6 muffins but I was sure they were going to be fantastic.

OMG. Gobbled a mouthful, spat it out, washed my mouth out, threw the remainder and the other 5 into the bin.

Still, I now own a muffin tin.

@CallMeCleo were you not meant to mix in a beaten egg to make mini 'muffins'?

Spodge · 10/05/2021 17:46

Anyone remember Findus Crispy Pancakes? Yeah, those.

Also Sandwich Spread.

Gandalfsthong · 10/05/2021 17:47

Another vote for Hershey’s chocolate (wtaf) and fruit teas. Just no

BrownEyedGirl80 · 10/05/2021 17:47

Bbq sauce 🤮

shinynewapple21 · 10/05/2021 17:54

@WouldbeVa

Those little moons that everyone raves about, like a squishy testicle, not a feel that ever belongs in a mouth. 🤢

@WouldbeVa little moons? What do you mean ?

Luckyelephant1 · 10/05/2021 17:55

Five guys burgers are OK but yes definitely overpriced.

However their hot dogs are cheaper and arguably better than the burgers, and their cajun fries are amazingggg, you get so much as well.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 10/05/2021 17:56

Marmite peanut butter. Love marmite. Love peanut butter. No brainer. No, it’s rank. Ranker than rank. Even the dog turned her nose up.
Also, what’s the deal with white asparagus? My dd is in Amsterdam and they go wild for it. For me it looks like something that grew in a dank cellar.

And then your wee smells of sugar puffs

@DesertSky

Fruits de mer in France. I love seafood so was excited for a seafood platter all to myself! When it arrived it was literally a selection of large sea snails. I was so disappointed. My husband tried convincing me they were a delicacy and to try them with the garlic paste. I reluctantly swallowed them down with large glugs of water. I had an upset stomach for the following 3 days Blush
I had something similar but in Venice. Fruits de mer turned out to be fruits de filthy canal (and I can assure you that there is no crab, lobster or anything else nice down there!)
Daisypp · 10/05/2021 18:15

Same story re Hershey choc. Fantasise for years before trying it in the US -DISGUSTING
But I love sandwich spread!

B0bafett · 10/05/2021 18:17

The new Coke Zero, was my favourite drink, new taste is awful. I switched to Pepsi max

Plunger · 10/05/2021 18:26

Hersets put milk through a process called lipolysis which breaks down the fatty acids present into metric acid that gives vomit it's characteristic smell and taste. It's disgusting!!
