Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

@CityCommuter

When I first went on holiday to the USA as a teenager in the 1990's I couldn't wait to try Hershey's chocolate that I'd seen on lots of American TV shows and films...

Anyway after the first bite I was sure it had gone off as the taste is so odd it can only be described as tasting like vomit! That's the nearest description to it... The chocolate hadn't gone off, it actually really does taste like that (to anyone who hasn't tried it yet btw).... I couldn't and still can't understand how my American relatives go wild for this taste and love that chocolate... I'm NOT exaggerating btw, it's truly yucky!

I couldn’t agree more. Solid vomit is the only description. So disappointed

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting. Bought them as a healthy snack but has to have a Haribo to take the taste away.

Agree they were recommended on here as an alternative to crisps ,I tried them once ,vile 🤮

Don't know if it's unexpected but celery. When you consider that cucumber and other crudités are lovely, celery is just urgh.

I'm totally with you on celery. It's tolerable cooked, but raw it's just horrible.

Those new cold infusion things from Twinings. Was so disappointed.

I am coeliac and lots of gluten free stuff is also dairy free. Dairy alternatives are rank, completely rank.

American food. I got one of those treat box deliveries and none of it even tasted like actual food. And when we went to America even the actual food didn't. Veg and fruit is just water, it doesn't taste of anything.

Yes @x2boys I was being all virtuous with my snacking, I should have just got the Frazzles after all.

Whoever mentioned fruit teas I hear you. They smell nice and then they literally taste of nothing.

Oh yes they're awful.

Agree with everyone on Hershey's chocolate. See also Twinkies. DS wanted one so badly as an iconic US food. I warned him but he insisted on trying. They taste like they've been left unwrapped at the back of Asda bakery for a month

Aero dark

^this. DH bought a bar last week, it was so dry and tasteless. I normally love both Aero and dark chocolate so it was disappointing.

Maybe not entirely unexpected, but I bought freeze dried jellyfish from an Asian supermarket when I was a student. You had to add boiling water to it - it was disgusting and like eating massive bogies. 20+ years later the thought still makes me feel ill 🤢

One of those sauce in the middle fish cakes, I'd enjoyed the sainsburys ones before. Had a Waitrose one and it was utterly vile, the cheese sauce tasted like lemon tart filling. It was distressing.

@danadas which dairy alternatives are you getting? We're vegan and have found dairy alternatives very hit and miss, but can honestly say we've found good swaps now.

Saw a recipe on a facebook page for a nice keto side dish. You mix up sliced leeks with Boursin cheese and put blobs of the mixture into a buttered muffin tray. Sprinkle with cheddar and bake in the oven. The poster showed a photo and they looked yummy!

Later I spent £1 on leeks, £4 on two packs of Boursin and £5 on a non stick muffin tray. Followed the recipe exactly. Seemed a bit pricy at £10 for 6 muffins but I was sure they were going to be fantastic.

OMG. Gobbled a mouthful, spat it out, washed my mouth out, threw the remainder and the other 5 into the bin.

Still, I now own a muffin tin.

Orange After Eights.

I love orange chocolates. I like After Eights. What could possibly go wrong?

Everything.

I like wensleydale with apricot, but wensleydale with cranberries is hideous, raw or cooked.

I like some of the Twinings cold infuse fruit teas, but there's a watermelon strawberry & mint flavoured one that tastes like mould to me, TBH. I thought I'd got a bad batch so I bought a second pack & no, it tastes like mould.
