Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Love raw tomatoes. Nothing beats a caprese with a drizzle of olive oil and basil.

redcandlelight · 10/05/2021 14:16

And I actually did get taken to one side for questioning at the airport when I’d packed a couple of blocks to take home with me...

taking a whole salami on a flight does the same...

Lweji · 10/05/2021 14:23

Turkish Turkish delight is far superior to English Turkish delight!

Maybe, but I still hate it and find it way too sweet.

WarmSausageTea · 10/05/2021 14:32

Chocolate dipped strawberries. So disappointing, the chocolate was cold, brittle and almost tasteless and just didn’t work with the taste and texture of the strawberries. I left a couple to get to room temperature, thinking that the chocolate would taste better and feel, but it just got sweaty and clammy. They looked so beautiful, but tasted of acrimony and regret.

Also mushrooms in pasta. Fine separately, but put them together and it’s the devil’s vomit.

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 14:56

I liked the drumstick chocolate but ds ( who has a sweet tooth ) thought it was awful !
He hated the mix of the two.
I couldn't eat a lot of it , but i do like drum stick lollies on their own as well.

And haggis

@QueenAdreena

I normally love Covent Garden soups, but their Skinny Souper Green soup smelt and tasted like farts. Worst thing I’ve ever eaten.

@Ihatesalad

Waitrose mushroom stroganoff in their vegan range (I’m not vegan) tasted and smelt totally like sweaty socks
Hahaha!!
Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2021 15:40

@Mmmmdanone

Can I do an opposite? Thing that I thought would be disgusting but wasn't? Drumstick lolly chocolate. I bought it for my ds who loves drumstick lollies, and thought I'd try it. He didn't get it in the end 🤣
Have you tried the Drumstick Squashies Ice lollies? I love them and they're only £1.29 for 4 in Home Bargains last time I looked.
LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 10/05/2021 15:41

Camomile tea.

Like lying face down on damp grass with your mouth open.

CounsellorTroi · 10/05/2021 15:43

Mashed sweet potato. It's tolerable in chunks but has a revolting slimy texture when mashed.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 10/05/2021 15:43

Oh yes, and Root Beer.

Tastes and smells like Germolene

MyGrassIsBrowner · 10/05/2021 15:44

Cranberry juice. Tastes like the smell of the dusty pub carpet!

Sunny68 · 10/05/2021 15:45

@KarmaViolet

Another vote for the seaweed thins. Absolutely vile.

Although my gold medal goes to the Wicked Kitchen Caesar Wrap. I'm not averse to meat replacements but oh. my. fuck. that was the grimmest thing I have ever attempted to eat. The wrap was soggy and slightly plasticky, while the salty, viscous sauce dripped from the bottom. Like eating a used condom.

Goddammit!! I can't get that picture out of my head now....
minniemomo · 10/05/2021 15:46

@BumCat

I love oysters, but then I eat lots of foods that some people have an ick about yet hate peas!

Sunny68 · 10/05/2021 15:51

@Kottbullar

Also coconut water, it sounds so refreshing, it tastes like tropical sweat!
Wholeheartedly agree!!
EsmaCannonball · 10/05/2021 15:58

Am I the only person in the world who has a strong reaction against porridge? My mum made it for me once when I was little and I found it revolting. When I was in my twenties it became trendy so I thought I'd give it another try. I bought the good stuff and went to great effort to make it properly but, no, it was still like grey, mushy brains and the smell made me nauseous. If I end up in prison or on a show like Big Brother I will never cope.

Member984815 · 10/05/2021 15:58

Yes Hershey's tastes of vomit 🤮

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 16:10

Coconut water is vile. It just sounds nice and as if it should taste like Malibu! The reality is very different

Snowpaw · 10/05/2021 16:12

Udon noodles

Truffle mayonnaise

Fancy crisp flavours that involve herbs, like “roast chicken and sage” and “best ever roast potato flavour with rosemary” - keep that shite out of my crisps please.

Glittertwins · 10/05/2021 16:15

Another one for the Hershey's vomit taste!!
"Proper" Turkish Delight is lovely, we get it in our local restaurant and a colleague brought some over with him in the days we could travel for work.

Livoey · 10/05/2021 16:18

Mr Porky’s Pork Scratchings.

I love a pork scratching, guilty pleasure. These looked good but the bag I had a really off-putting chemical taste. Shame.

Oneearringlost · 10/05/2021 16:25

@andtheweedonkey

Cherry flavour Jaffa Cakes.

They taste like Benylin. 🤢

Ooh, I like Benylin....
Luckyelephant1 · 10/05/2021 16:46

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

I''ve thought of one - papaya which smells and tastes of vomit to me.

Love smelly cheese as do DC despite having been fussy about plenty of other foodstuffs over the years.

Ah yes I thought I was the only one that thought this about papaya! It's my mums favourite fruit and when she first made me try it I thought it had gone bad. It's disgusting!
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/05/2021 16:59

I’ve been reminded by another thread - something that used to be lovely but became vile overnight is baked beans and spaghetti in tomato sauce. I used to love these (especially the BBQ beans in sauce), and would occasionally have them on toast, as a treat for my lunch, but overnight they all became vile.

I think they have changed the recipe of the sauce to make it lower in sugar and salt, but sadly all this has achieved is to make the sauce thin, tasteless and a complete disappointment. No more beans on toast for me. Sad
