Unexpectedly disgusting food

dontforgettofloss · 09/05/2021 18:52

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Linda McCartney vege sausages. Cardboard on a plate. Yuk.

Vegan cheese.

When Frankie & Bennie’s was around…….tasteless plates of cold food. Without fail. And it looked so promising on the outside of the restaurant

the80sweregreat · 10/05/2021 18:40

Promising restaurants and the even more promising menu rarely delivers! It's the independent places with a smaller menu that is usually better.

shergar · 10/05/2021 18:51

Haribo sweets. The shiny waxy coating on them tastes absolutely foul, and stinks on fingers.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/05/2021 18:51

Apparently Hershey’s used lipolysis on the milk that went into its chocolate as a way to give their chocolate a longer shelf life - Americans weren’t used to eating European style chocolate so didn’t know it wasn’t supposed to have that butyric acid vomit taste.

And then when Hershey’s became the chocolate of choice for Americans, other manufacturers added butyric acid to their chocolate, so it tasted more like Hershey’s.

@the80sweregreat

Maybe the slim fast meals are made so horrible and tasteless so people don't eat them and lose weight that way ? .. just a thought.
I say they used this thinking with nicotine gums. That was my exact thought. Made disgusting on purpose😂
Pliudev · 10/05/2021 18:56

The Honey&co Pecan, ricotta and chocolate cake recipe I made this weekend. Sounds lovely? No it wasn't , the ingredients cost a lot and it had the texture of a greasy sponge ( the bathroom kind). It tastes pretty weird too. I have just served it up with chopped banana and creme fraiche (can't bring myself to bin it) but even that was grim.

Lovely13 · 10/05/2021 19:10

@drpet49

Quorn
Agree! Has a weird, overwhelmingly ugly taste. Wish it didn’t. Wish they could devise something better.
KittyKatChonky · 10/05/2021 19:11

Hershey’s 🤢

Oreos

Harry Potter chocolate frog (tasted like Hershey’s 🤢) and Harry Potter jelly slugs

Falafel - I don’t know what testicle sweat tastes like but it most likely tastes of falafel

Hoi sin stir fry sauce

Bought some Maynard bassets fruit smoothie jellies today - they’re rank

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2021 19:12

@shinynewapple21 these things. they are £££££s so I'm too tight to try them but everyone I know that has thinks 'meh'. there was a TikTok craze with them which meant they were out of stock everywhere for weeks but they're back now.

I think I have only met one cake I really didn’t like - it was a German apple cake recipe, made using the Herman sourdough starter that people breed and share with friends. I got given some at my knitting group, and decided to make the apple cake, but it was a complete disappointment - soggy, heavy and tasting of not very much (and I promise I followed the recipe properly). I had one piece and couldn’t face any more.

It did get finished up by my dustbin-guts teenagers, so wasn’t wasted - but I really wish I had just made sourdough bread with it, because I know I love that.

Oooh i like mochi ice cream, first tried it in one restaurant here. Never heard of this brand.
I am sure I saw mochi stuff like this in local Chinese supermarket, just not hyped up brand🙈

balkanscot · 10/05/2021 19:23

Pink flavoured gin. And any other kind of “fancy” flavoured gin. 🤮 DH bought me a pink flavoured one the other day (pre mixed), it tastes of all the cough lozenges mashed up together. With a generous dollop of cough syrup. Vile stuff, should be outlawed and punishable by a lengthy prison sentence.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 10/05/2021 19:24

I had assumed that the little moons were some sort of fruit - lychees, probably - but I see they are mochi balls with ice cream centres - I’ve had these at Wagamama, and loved them!

You can get a pack of two at Sushi bars in Waitrose too. Still £££s though.
Shannith · 10/05/2021 19:32

Hershey's Kisses. Satan's little balls of vomit more like.

And goats cheese. Even the finest, youngest mildest, ash coated artisan ones taste of GOAT.

I've tried ones people claimed, "even people who don't like goat cheese like this." Nope. It tastes of goat. The way goats smell anyway.

Goat meat doesn't taste of goat. But goat cheese or (be still my panicking heart) goats milk? I might as well go into a goat pen and lick their bums.

And I'm a stinky cheese lover. I've petted goats. I've briefly looked after one and I don't mind their smell per see. But I don't want that smell prancing around in my mouth.

I love all sheep's cheeses. Because they don't taste like a barnyard.

Meeeeehhhh

Shannith · 10/05/2021 19:36

@ChinstrapBobblehat

OMG, American chocolate is vile - tastes like some kind of powdered shite invented in wartime.

And yes to wood pigeon - bleargh Envy. I love game and rare meat, but the first time I tried that was the last; just chewy, bummy, almost raw flobble.

Worst thing ever though was pike. Ordered it in a very chichi London restaurant and it was utterly fucking grim. Literally tasted of mud, in a thin grey gravy. Most disgusting thing I’ve ever tasted in my life, completely inedible, chewy and full of bones. DH almost choked laughing as he tucked into his steak ...

Oh yes you're e reminded me. River fish that are not trout or salmon taste of mud no matter how well they are cooked.

I love fish and J Sheekey is one of my favourite restaurants. I made the mistake of ordering - pike possibly and it was mud.

I was so sad.

bstokegirl · 10/05/2021 19:50

Black pudding - tastes even worse than it smells, sounds and looks

Pigwig10 · 10/05/2021 19:50

Hershey’s, I have to agree with PPs, the very 1st time I tried it I spat it out and said it tasted of vomit. Never has it passed my lips again, nor will it. Vile stuff!!

tedsletterofthelaw · 10/05/2021 19:54

Tried making kale chips once. They were rank.

shinynewapple21 · 10/05/2021 19:55

@GinJeanie agree about the soggy sandwiches - really makes me want to heave

@Rattysparklebum agree on the beetroot - not sure it tastes of mud, but whatever it does taste of, it's one of the few things I can't eat due to taste rather than texture.

Whisky is another one. Mostly I can't even get the glass close enough to taste it due to the smell

I love avocado, coriander and olives though .

Thank you @Sparklingbrook - I'd never heard of them but they look nice Smile

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 10/05/2021 19:55

Almost everything we've bought from Aldi. I just don't get the hype!

Hershey's chocolate - I agree with all the comments. It's vile. But Americans are just conditioned to like it and know no better. Hershey's kisses are the one thing that sit on the cabinet at work - every time someone would go to America for a holiday they'd bring back treats and the Hershey's chocolate was always the last thing to go. Sometimes it'd be there for weeks!

Goats cheese 🤢

Lamb / goat meat

Seriously1996 · 10/05/2021 20:00

Pate from marks and Spencer’s . So disappointing. It tastes like vomit with a really nasty after taste

Waitwhat23 · 10/05/2021 20:50

People have mentioned mochi - there is a lot of anime watched in my house and my husband wanted to try the red bean paste ones which are raved about so we got a packet from Amazon. Utterly disgusting. Like wet, sweet bread with a horribly sweet savory taste.

To be fair, the ones from restaurants may be better.

Bertiebiscuit · 10/05/2021 21:08

All seaweed "snacks" - I thought I liked seaweed but these all taste like greasy seawater 🤢🤮

Carpedimum · 10/05/2021 21:09

Anyone who does Keto will know of ‘Bulletproof Coffee’ - Jesus, Mary, Joseph & the wee donkey that is some vile shit! 🤮
