Particularly as porn has become so much more mainstream in the past few years, I'd have thought that people would be concerned about premature sexualisation of children. Also I'm surprised that so many women are fine with it given that the humiliation and degradation of women is the central theme of pornography. You only have to look at the titles to realise that.

and the men who are in porn, the women who make porn for women.. are they all exploited and forced into it?

Marina · 14/11/2007 21:24

I think it is possible to dislike porn intensely for all the reasons you list lulumama, without assuming that all users of porn condone child abuse, degradation of women etc
I do think that a lot of porn users are not aware of the misogyny and exploitation that underpins the industry though

LuckySalem · 14/11/2007 21:25

For those saying that porn expliots women and degrades them.

Look up the name Kathy Barry - She makes porn for women and only has sex with women Oh and is loaded!! - Is she being degraded and do you think she's going to degrade other women?

onebatmother · 14/11/2007 21:25

gff when i was young enough to consider shaving aaanything, anal in porn was a specialist subject.

VictorianSqualor · 14/11/2007 21:26

I don't have a problem with porn, it doesn;t really do it for me, to get turned on I have to actually want to have sex with the person turning me on, so watching others on a film, doesn;t work.

My DP is also the same, he just isn't into porn.

However I do have both male and female friends who really enjoy it, I know someone that has made films for next to nothing, because it was a sexual fantasy for her.
Not all porn is degrading to women, not all pornstars are vulnerable, and not all sexualisation of our culture is down to porn.

I agree that things like Playboy should NOT be sold to youngsters, I agree that the over-sexualisation of breasts changed breastfeeding rates, BUT I don;t think it is all to be blamed on porn, it is society in general.

People like to have sex, some like to watch others do it. If people are in a sex club being watched, through their own choice does it make it degrading??? What if those same people decide they love exhibitionism so much they want their sexual activites broadcast all over the web or in shops on sale???

There is way more to the porn debate than claiming it is all bad.

Rhubarb · 14/11/2007 21:26

Did anyone see that Cook Report ages ago? A British woman answered an ad for a nursery assistant job abroad - Portugal was it? When she got there she was kidnapped, drugged, beaten and forced into prostitution. They got her hooked onto drugs and would beat her and threaten to put her in a snuff movie if she didn't do as they said.

She managed to escape but has been mentally affected by her experiences. She said beatings were common for the women there, most were force-fed drugs to keep them quiet.

Her story is truly shocking.

Lulumama · 14/11/2007 21:26

fair enough marina.

normabutty · 14/11/2007 21:26

policywonk...I'll try not to be so vulgar this evening!

onebatmother · 14/11/2007 21:27

goingfriggincrazy · 14/11/2007 21:27

maybe the next stage is a dildo lucky...teehee

Marina · 14/11/2007 21:27

Fast moving thread - absolutely spink. I recently had to decode "sexing" and some other interesting vocab for ds (8), something I took time and care over while wishing myself anywhere but there . But unfortunately a lot of children don't have an adult in their lives that they can turn to in order to get a reassuring perspective when they encounter sexually explicit images/words too young I agree that's society's problem at large.

Elizabetth wrt your post of Wed 14-Nov-07 21:20:54.
All crimes are becoming more and mroe recorded, this is because of video phones, and digital handheld cameras being everywhere, not because of the change in the porn industry, the change in technology.

goingfriggincrazy · 14/11/2007 21:28

I ve seen anal sex within ancient erotic art...been around for thousands of yrs..

LuckySalem · 14/11/2007 21:29

Rhubarb - I will agree there is some nasty parts of the business, but there is nasty parts of lots of businesses. It wasn't so long ago we were happy to buy stuff that had been made by children being forced to sew stuff in tiny hot rooms for 18 hours a day.

OBM, last time I gave my views on anal sex, policywonk said it was the most disgusting post she'd ever read on MN

Elizabetth · 14/11/2007 21:30

Come off it Victorian Squalor, that's not an answer. They sexually assaulted a developmentally disabled girl and did hideous things to her then marketed the DVD they had made of it as a porn movie with the disclaimer that she had "consented".

OP posts:
VictorianSqualor · 14/11/2007 21:30

The same as I would feel if it was my son.

Do men not exist in the porn industry???

goingfriggincrazy · 14/11/2007 21:31

People have raped and abused for years, it is awful, it is disgusting, it shouldnever happen, BUT it is not purely down to the porn industry.
It is because some men are rapists and abusers.

Elizabetth · 14/11/2007 21:32

Would you mind if your son was a "bottom" in gay porn Victorian Squalor - that's the analgous position to women in pornography - as a set of orifices to be penetrated and degraded.

OP posts:
goingfriggincrazy · 14/11/2007 21:32

onebatmother · 14/11/2007 21:32
