AIBU?

To have pomped my horn?

Friedmushroom · 13/04/2021 23:24

Will try and keep this quick Grin but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test Hmm, “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

Here's a huge list of alternative terms.

Sadly, the compiler of this list wasn't educated enough to consider 'pomp', but, rather concerningly, 'poop' IS there. If it wasn't Mr Toad, I'm worried for them now....

Pretty sure you aren’t supposed to use it when stationary though.

No parping whilst parking.

Pooped my horn?? No! 🤣

This reminds me of the other day DD was being a bit boasty about something and said “I don’t like to toot my own horn but...” brilliant expression, I thought.

Bit of a non-problem OP sorry!

@gottenhaitch

It's pamped and this is a hill I will die on.

It’s not it’s bipped.

@BackforGood

YWNBU, and indeed were being very sensible to let her know you were there, but I feel everyone has become distracted by us all learning a rather wonderful new word tonight.

Am I the only one wanting to know what you were doing, "parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on" gone 11 at night ???

Grin this also crossed my mind when posting but I thought surely the good sensible women of Mumsnet won’t go down that rabbit hole? I clearly underestimated you!

I better come clean.....picked my partner up from the pub, he hadn’t had any tea, one thing led to another and the next thing you know we’re sat in a McDonalds drive thru parking bay waiting for a Big Mac Blush

Not read the thread so no idea if yabu but I love the pomped! Why have I never heard it.
You are my new favourite person for using my new favourite word.

Pomped is a beautiful word and I am adopting it. I also now want a Big Mac.

@Friedmushroom

I was straight down the rabbit hole!!! Sadly your story is lacking, please try again!!

Now back to the horn (or it could be related!!) 'Pomping' your horn was understandable and wise- her being annoyed at being judged to be an incompetent driver was also understandable.

Goid eye roll or two and move on!

Beeped or honked. Never heard pomped.....Smile

@Friedmushroom

Grin ‘Pomped’ is fairly common up here (Lancashire) wonder if it’s a regional thing?

I'm in lancashire (born here, lived here all my life) and I've never heard of pomped. I beep of honk my horn. Grin

@gottenhaitch we say pooped (like Mr Toad from Wind in the Willows) or honked.

I am prepared to back you in the pomped/pamped war but need to know your reasoning.

Dare you to start a thread entitled "What do you do with your horn?" Grin we need this settled once and for all!

I say 'pipped' or 'bipped'. I've heard Lancastrians say 'pomped' before; it's a fun expression!

Also, OP, you were right to alert reversing woman to your presence.

I was another one going to question what you were doing “parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on”

Surely you honked?

Report
SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 14/04/2021 01:23

Or beeped?!

Report
BabyofMine · 14/04/2021 05:40

This is so weird.
Pomped is definitely the normal word for that to me to the point I didn’t realise there was any other word for it?! I’m from the same place as the OP I expect.

SockQueen · 14/04/2021 05:50

"Pomping" hilarity aside, I think a single beep/toot/whatever isn't unreasonable, but then leaning on your horn is unnecessarily aggressive, especially if someone is in the middle of a tricky manoeuvre.

Absolutely came for the pomped. Was wondering if it was a typo or family word or local dialect!

I do remember a discussion about bipped before (which sounds even weirder to me!)

Thanks OP 😁. But yes beeping your horn to let others know you're there (ie they dont hit you) is what the horns for!

I read the thread title and thought "oooh, a Lancastrian!". Ive only ever heard it used out Croston/Leyland/Chorley way, though 😊

Oversize · 14/04/2021 06:04

Your first pomp was fine to let her know you were there.
Your second 'lean' on the horn wasn't. I'm not surprised she had a go.

And it's parp. Like Noddy's little car 😄
