AIBU?

To have pomped my horn?

Will try and keep this quick Grin but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test Hmm, “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

@Friedmushroom

Grin ‘Pomped’ is fairly common up here (Lancashire) wonder if it’s a regional thing?

It may be regional, but I'm from down South and I have heard of it. Lovely term IMHO.

I would have tooted my horn, YANBU

YANBU to beep (otherwise sound your horn/pomp 😉). I would have done the same & would appreciate if someone alerted me to their presence if they felt I wasn't aware. Don't mind her. Plus lots of people have licences who must have been ultracareful on the day & corrected bad concentration/habits because lots of people can hardly park & some are truly shocking drivers.

Around here it's blowing your horn. Also this memory has just come to mind. An ex who was in the police once told me that there was an offence called "indiscriminate use of a car horn" though don't think that counts here

Loving the pomp and circumstance ( in the circumstance you were not unreasonable)

@Umbongoumbongo999

Surely you parped?

Nooooo! 'Parped' means 'farted'.

A honking sound produced by, or like that produced by, a car horn.

I always thought tooted means farted.

If everyone who has passed their test were perfect drivers and parkers then we wouldn't need insurance then would we?

@Yesitsbess

Pomped is a beautiful word and I am adopting it. I also now want a Big Mac.

You can't have a Big Mac until "one thing's led to another"......

YANBU - the Highway Code states that the horn is to be used to signal your presence to another driver, not to show annoyance.

This is how you used it.

It's all about pomp and circumstance Wink

Love pomp and circumstance 👏🏻

Another 'Pomped?' Like a regal version of pimping your horn? Did you turn it into a decorative page's bugle?

I think you overdid the pomping. One beep, or two brisk ones would have been fine, to let them know you were there. Leaning on the horn was excessive and was an attempt to control their behaviour, rather than a warning.

Lots of people prefer to park alongside another a car, than among empty spaces, as it gives you something to more easily visible than lines, align yourself with.

Oops! 'more easily visible than lines, to align yourself with'.

Pretty sure you aren’t supposed to use it when stationary though

Why not? It you're stopped at a junction and see someone driving straight at you, how are you supposed to alert them?

Confusedandshaken · 14/04/2021 09:01

A brief beep (not POMP) to let her know you were there is fine. Leaning on your horn is never ok. IMO that's a critique of her driving, not a warning and she is entitled to be pissed off at that.

I like the driver's argument that you should have assumed she was a perfect driver because she had passed her test. (1) You didn't know whether she'd passed her test and (2) Manifestly passing your test is no guarantee of perfect driving, otherwise no-one would ever have an accident.

YANBU, you were just telling her that you were there, and you couldn't have known that she knew - you're not psychic.

Some people get ridiculously worked up about their cars and any time their driving skill comes into question. But obviously safety is the most important thing, not your ego.

In a survey something like 75% of people thought they were a better than average driver, so go figure Hmm Wink

Incidentally I also love how many of the comments here are about the word "pomped".
