To have pomped my horn?

Will try and keep this quick but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test , “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

@Billandben444 I am a regular at The Lister - they also change the direction of the up and down flow circa floor 2 which often catches people out.

I haven't been Listered (yet) but the New QE11 down the road left a street light standing in their new car park and I swung the side of my car into as I reversed out of a space. £650's worth of damage

@Ginuwine I’m not sure if you read everything I wrote! I said she was NOT being unreasonable to beep if she thought a car was going to hit her! If the person hadn’t seen her then beeping would have been the right thing to do and would have probably avoided an accident.

However sometimes it’s good to chill and see things from the others persons perspective. They didn’t actually hit her car and it can’t be proved they would have if she didn’t beep at them, so they might not be a bad driver at all and were perfectly aware that her car was there before she beeped at them! You’re making an assumption based on very little facts!

I’m just saying if I was parking and someone was beeping their horn at me it certainly wouldn’t help! (Assuming I had already seen them! 😂)

If we all just were a little kinder and more relaxed beeping at someone to alert them of your presence wouldn’t be a problem! There was no need for the driver to be rude to this lady, they could just have had a civil conversation! Neither person knew what the other was thinking when they were beeping/parking, so why all the stress?

Omg my total pet hate.... why oh why do some people feel they have to parked right next to you when the car park is empty?????!!!!!! Cars aren’t pack animals!
I’d have done more then ‘pumped’ my horn! I may even have added a few choice words myself!

No, not being unreasonable at all. Personally, I'd be grateful if someone beeped at me (or even better pomped their horn) if I was getting too close to them without realising.

I have a reversing camera and have been "pomped" at (love it) before. You know exactly how far away you are and can be very close without hitting someone. I understand, though, that it's disconcerting for others, who may not know that this is a thing, or that I have one. So I give them a little wave and it's all good. You were not being unreasonable to pomp - better safe than sorry. They could have just said - "didn't mean to alarm you" and left it at that.

I nearly had to pomp yesterday. Why are hospital parking spaces so narrow? The driver managed to park the end after much in and out but it was close, and I had to drive forward for my friend to get in the car.

I suppose "pomp" comes from pump, from the days when horns had a big rubber bulb that you squeezed to make the sound?
