AIBU?

To have pomped my horn?

Will try and keep this quick Grin but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test Hmm, “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

All this "using cameras", or "visualising the space" stuff.. it's great..

...but what about mirrors? For me they're all you need to get into a space. They're all we had for years. Correctly adjusted and used, they're literally all that's needed to effectively reverse.

The weird thing is I've seen people before who reverse only looking at the rear view, and then nervously slam on the breaks the minute they see from another window/over shoulder glance, that oops.. it's time to straighten up.

Mirrors are our friends!

Absolutely.

Apart from when then space is too narrow for the mirrors and you have to get into it with them folded in.

(In answer to your next 2 questions:
  1. Regularly and
  2. Through the boot Grin)

I pomped mine too in the same situation and got a similar response! I am still smarting from it. He was reversing, he got a bit close, I pomped and he said (loudly but not yelling) "I've got sensors!!" Makes no sense to me! It's like shouting "I've got eyes!" Just because someone has eyes/sensors this does not mean they will not reverse into and damage your car. Appropriate and justified pomping IMO. YWNBU and neither was I!

Grin ‘Pomped’ is fairly common up here (Lancashire) wonder if it’s a regional thing?

Golly, I'm in Lancashire and have never heard of it! It must be very regional then - I'm in East Lancs.

I would have said beeped - or sounded my horn if I wanted to be formal about it.

I'm Lancashire born and bred and I've never pomped.....

Ditto! To get back to the original post, personally I feel that the best way to deal with the screechers is to totally, utterly ignore them, a Paddington look is also useful, they hate it when you don't engage, drives them mad.

Why didn’t you have lights on in the dark car park if it was an issue for people to see?

YWNBU to beep if you genuinely thought the car was going to hit you, that’s what the horns for.

However looking at it from the other cars perspective, if someone beeped me while I was trying to park it might put be off a bit as I would be preoccupied thinking about what I was doing wrong! (However I’m not a very confident parker!)

I definitely wouldn’t get out the car and start having a go at you though! Think the problem was more with how you both dealt with each other after the pomp, rather than the pomp itself!

Presumably would need the engine running for that.

I was waiting to pull out of a car park (cars from further along were driving out so I had to wait). I saw that the car in a space to the right had reverse lights on but didn’t think the driver would pull out, because I was there, in his rear view mirror, not able to move. When he did reverse into the side of my car I had tried to ‘pomp’Grin my horn but was in such a panic and it happened so quickly. When he got out it turned out to be one of my customers! He was very apologetic and paid for the repair.

Lived my whole life in Lancashire yet never pomped. Am I missing out?

Honked.
And yes, YABU.
All she did was park, she didn’t hit your car, you’d honked once but not happy with that you sat with your hand on the horn. I’d have told you to F Off as well.

See this is the problem with some folk. OP has very clearly explained the other driver was about to hit her car.

Imagine this was you. Would you be happy for that person to hit your car? Would you do something about it perhaps?

Has this country become so nuts that we'd rather avoid the perceived passive aggression of a horn, used correctly to avoid a crash however slow it is?

Madness to me

How on Earth is it a problem to "put someone off" crashing into you?

So @Friedmushroom is expected to sit there, let this person's shit parking play out, get bumped into...... and then run the risk that this person could walk off, deny liability...

... all to avoid this person being distracted??

This site is beyond understanding for me.

The person parking badly is at fault.

They should learn to park.

Then maybe when they're about to hit someone else's car? They don't have to worry about horns being sounded.

My Mother nearly reversed into me once when I was parked in her drive and she was leaving. She hadn't expected me to be there.

I watched her edge closer to my car and she is normally very good at driving. I thought wtf is she doing? So I gave her a pomp (have I used that right?).

She said after, thank God I beeped her as she would have scraped both cars!

In conclusion, I don't see nothing wrong with a little pomp to save a grind.

So as not to run the battery down.

Illegal to leave engine idling whilst parked, so no lights?

Maybe they didn’t want to dazzle anyone.

I wouldn’t sit there with my lights on. How weird.

To those who say just use your mirrors - that would be useless in the Lister Hospital multi storey in Stevenage where all the 'edge barriers' are about 18" off the ground and totally invisible when backing into a space (or coming out at an angle). All the local bodyshops make decent money from cars that have been Listered.
