AIBU?

To have pomped my horn?

Will try and keep this quick Grin but I’m so annoyed by the car park stand off I’ve just had that I need to know AIBU?

So, I’ve just been parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on. Another car pulls up and starts to reverse into the space right next to me, which is a disabled spot so huuuuge, and with plenty of other spaces around. Car reverses at a funny angle, at speed, and VERY close to my car, so close both passenger and me think it’s going to make contact.

I pomp my horn, car keeps coming so I lean on horn. Driver peers round at me shouting and gesticulating. She finishes parking (with me and passenger both wincing), winds window down and starts having a go.

Apparently I’m BU to have pomped as she has reversing cameras so knew I was there. My stand point is; you were literally an inch away from my car (when there’s two whole empty spaces to play with), I don’t know you have cameras, I was warning you that I was there. Car accidents happen every single day so I was making sure you didn’t hit me. She thought this was a ridiculous point and can obviously drive properly as she has passed her test Hmm, “people wouldn’t pass their test if they didn’t know how to park”.

I’m so annoyed by her attitude, but she clearly thought I was completely ridiculous. I think it would have been ridiculous for me to have sat in my car and just allowed her to reverse into it. So Mumsnet, AIBU?

We’re drifting away from the OPs question I appreciated, but my pet hate is ‘bibbed’ - ie ‘I bibbed him’

I am going to start using Pomp

😁

What on earth is 'pomped' never heard of it. Beeped is the word you are looking for.

@Hotelhelp

It’s peeped or beeped FYI

Who says ‘peeped’?

TBF I did second guess myself but the only other terminology I could think of was ‘sounded my...’ and I thought who the fuck says that in real life Grin

I’m from Lancashire and never heard of ‘pomped’! Definitely ‘bibbed’.

YANBU re: bibbing though.

Pomped 😂

I’ve avoided people reversing in to me by ‘pomping’ my horn before, also had very expensive repairs and increased insurance premiums (despite no fault of my own) from some incompetent cunt leaving a massive dent in my car whilst I was blissfully unaware inside the shop - so no, not unreasonable at all. There are far too many dicks who can’t shouldn’t drive & can’t reverse to leave it to chance as they back towards your car, bang it & you’re dealing with the time consuming & expensive outcome IMO..

Was this a dogging place and this is all one biiiiig euphemism?

Thanks @Hamster1111and @fourandnomore

I did think she might be embarrassed (or pissed) but just thought it was bizarre. As I drive an old banger I’m not sure how the sensors work but it wasn’t the rear of her car, more the side panel looked like it was going to scrape the car.

I've never heard it before, but 'pomped' is now my go-to word, in all circumstances Grin

Now, after all these years, I finally understand what the Steve Miller Band were singing about - they were clearly rating their love of car horns apropos each contender's relative 'pompetence'!

@PulledPineapple I’ve never heard bibbed!

Obviously a very small, weird, circle that I move in!

YANBU - the Highway Code states that the horn is to be used to signal your presence to another driver, not to show annoyance.

This is how you used it.

It's all about pomp and circumstance Wink

YWNBU, and indeed were being very sensible to let her know you were there, but I feel everyone has become distracted by us all learning a rather wonderful new word tonight.

Am I the only one wanting to know what you were doing, "parked up in a dark car park, in a dark coloured car, no lights on" gone 11 at night ???

Well you’ve definitely taken my mind off it anyway! Thanks all Smile

Off now to furiously google ‘pomp’ to reassure me I’m not totally alone in this...although that Google search may not quite go to plan if you lot are anything to go by BlushGrin

Pretty sure you aren’t supposed to use it when stationary though.
