To be a little bit in love with Ted Hastings?

Disclaimer: I'm currently catching up and halfway through Series 4, and aware that he may have become shadier in recent times (but don't know the details so no spoilers please!)

I think the fact he's Irish and has a huge line in sarky comebacks definitely helps.

@ButIcantsitonleather

I found Steve’s accent so weird and his delivery a bit stilted when I watched the first two seasons. Until then I had no idea he was Scottish AF.
I do struggle a little bit with Steve's accent. He is Scottish, but puts on the Estuary accent from the south east. Why? He is a fictional character. Why not just let him have his own original accent? His estuary accent sounds a bit odd to me, and actually sounds put on.

Kate (Vicky McClure,) is from Nottingham and speaks with her natural accent, and Jo (Kelly McDonald,) is from Glasgow and speaks in her natural accent. Same with Ted, and pretty much most of the others...

So why they gave 'Steve' an 'Estuary' accent when Martin Compston (who plays him) is Scottish/has a Scottish accent, just baffles me. Especially, as I say, it sounds put on. I actually thought his accent sounded odd when I first started to watch Line of Duty, so I googled him, and discovered he is Scottish.

I am getting a BIT more used to his 'put-on' accent, but it still jars me a little bit now and again...

Oh and 'miffed gerbil.' Grin

Igmum · 07/04/2021 19:28

Yes to Ted! (And Kate) but the only thing, the only thing he is interested in is the letter of the law (longing siiiigh) Grin

awaynboilyurheid · 07/04/2021 19:34

Jo sounds so stilted, it’s putting me off LOD, maybe she’s meant to be that controlled but its coming over wooden.
I couldn’t believe Martin was Scottish when I first heard him use his actual accent after I had watched him in LOD Agree Vicky McClure is stunning looking and had great hair and skin she plays the role so believably as does Steve. I like their banter, but Hastings is totally brilliant, agree with the op!

HermitsLife · 07/04/2021 19:34

I love Jo's accent, it's so lovely. I could listen to her talk all day long.

awaynboilyurheid · 07/04/2021 19:37

Jo (or Kelly) went to school down the road from me, no one talks that slowly and deliberately it’s v annoying. I know actors have to speak clearly but it’s so forced it’s making her acting seem wooden and stilted.

littlepattilou · 07/04/2021 19:37

I love Jo's accent too. It's beautiful. It's her natural accent too, unlike Steve's. Kelly McDonald is gorgeous too. Loved her as Evangeline in Nanny McPhee. Also agree Vicky McClure is gorgeous too. Stunning eyes, and a lovely smile. Smile

fizbosshoes · 07/04/2021 20:07

We're only on series 2 at the moment but Lol at the miffed gerbil.
And I remember Lindsay Denton being a total mind fuck trying to work out if shes innocent or guilty, the first time , and it's no easier the 2nd time round! Keely Hawes is brilliant.

ButIcantsitonleather · 07/04/2021 20:12

Cannot stop laughing at @iklboo calling Steve a miffed gerbil and @ShinyMe’s terrifying wee shite. 😂

Vanfanran · 07/04/2021 20:16

This thread is disturbing me somewhat.
I love Ted but he is actually a younger version of my father - Northern Irish, takes no shit, has a strong sense of law abiding duty, luxuriant hair and a fine line in catchphrases. Ted in a temper takes me back to sneaking in late as a teenager and incurring the dad wrath. Not fun.

I must check if they're actually related. It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they turned out to be cousins. NI is a small place

Tribblers · 07/04/2021 20:19

@Mustardfan

I love that you’re a bit in love with him, and you’ve opened my eyes to the possibility that I could be too.
Me too. Had never struck me as a possibility, even though I am in my 50s.
ShinyMe · 07/04/2021 20:28

@agentCooper that's the one. I just googled to check, it's called In Plain Sight, and was bloody horrific, and brilliant. Also starred Douglas Henshall, who is another one I love.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 07/04/2021 20:34

Ooh Douglas Henshall, I so would.

ColourMeExhausted · 07/04/2021 20:36

I fancied Dot in series not sure which one? Won't say what became of him in case of spoilers...I liked his voice!

dottiedodah · 07/04/2021 20:46

Just love his line "Im here for one thing and one thing only and thats to catch bent Carpers" So I am!

BigRedDuck · 07/04/2021 20:53

‘I’m the senior ranking officer here darling" makes me tremble. I love him 😍

Steve looks much better with a beard but still don't get the attraction. Miffed gerbil 😂😂

Sansaplans · 07/04/2021 20:57

I find Steve's accent really attractive, but it's fake isn't it.

Butteredtoast55 · 07/04/2021 20:59

I love that the advert interspersed in this thread is for a fridge freezer Grin

zenasfuck · 07/04/2021 21:00

I shouted "here he is" when he showed up this series - my husband just stared across the room at my enthusiasm

Chicchicchicchiclana · 07/04/2021 21:04

Yanbu. I am totally in love and lust with Ted. I am always waiting for his next scene when watching.

Lazyteens · 07/04/2021 21:22

Yanbu OP - there’s just something about him 😍
