Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

Surely a 17 week old puppy is too unreliable to expecting it to do anything other wee. The wee will leave a scent, so other dogs will do the same. Of course YABU.

GoWalkabout · 24/03/2021 17:43

I think it's their call.

SugarCoatIt · 24/03/2021 17:44

YABU I don't think they were being unreasonable in their request.

LaurieFairyCake · 24/03/2021 17:44

If they say dogs welcome then it's weird they didn't have antibac spray Confused

Why are they saying dogs welcome if they're not Confused

You sure you didn't get a bit defensive and argumentative ? - and you definitely need to carry this stuff when you have a dog - spray/tissues/bottle of water/poo bags

NiceTwin · 24/03/2021 17:45

I would have just picked it up when I went in. Puppies can wee for England, I think it is a bit much to expect them not to at 17 weeks.

MiddleParking · 24/03/2021 17:45

The sign does not say dog piss welcome. Come on OP!

LaurieFairyCake · 24/03/2021 17:45

I carried my dog inside places until she was reliable - 17 weeks is still very young

emmathedilemma · 24/03/2021 17:45

There's a dogs and then there's 17 week old puppies with unreliable bladders! YABU

FromDespairToHere · 24/03/2021 17:46

I'm sure dogs are welcome but not if they wee!

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 24/03/2021 17:46

If a man pissed on a pile of compost bags in a garden centre he’d rightly be thrown out surely, why not a dog ?

Whammyyammy · 24/03/2021 17:46

Sainsbury also sell pet products, going by your logic i can take my dogs round there then?

Elsiebear90 · 24/03/2021 17:47

YANBU, they can’t expect to let dogs in without some of them weeing or pooing in there, it’s what dogs do and as a dog owner you can’t really stop them, especially a young puppy. You kindly let them know and offered to clean it up, they were being very unreasonable imo.

MeredithGreysScalpel · 24/03/2021 17:48

What does the breed have to do with anything?

KitchenFairy · 24/03/2021 17:48

The sign does not say dog piss welcome. Come on OP

This.

I'm not sure they'd have been thrilled about your dog weeing on the grass outside either.

Burnt grass isn't the best advertisement for a garden centre. I don't let my dog wee on other people's grass, it makes a real mess of it.

CovidCorvid · 24/03/2021 17:48

Dogs don’t just wee because they have a full bladder. They were to scent mark, because they’re excited, etc. Especially at 17 weeks. It could easily have happened again, I’m not surprised they asked you to leave. Did you offer to carry the dog?

MichelleofzeResistance · 24/03/2021 17:48

My sympathies, mine humiliated me in a garden centre at a similar age - although most dog friendly garden centres, including mine, keep a cleaning up stand with sprays, paper towel etc since unfortunately sometimes they do this! Particularly when young. It's rather like saying you're child friendly but objecting to crying on the premises. They only mind if owners don't immediately sort the problem out and clean up properly.

Kroptopbelly · 24/03/2021 17:49

I don’t want to shop somewhere liberally flooded with dog piss thanks.
I think they were right to ask you to leave.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2021 17:49

YANBU to argue the toss - their shop, their rules. But if they say pets welcome and (like many 'garden centres') have a pet products section, they'd do better to take a leaf from the likes of Pets at Home where the staff clear up dog wee without fuss and even sometimes thank you for letting them know.

kowari · 24/03/2021 17:50

If the dog is not trained then they shouldn't be inside. You should have waited outside.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2021 17:50

I meant YABU to argue the toss.

nocoolnamesleft · 24/03/2021 17:50

YABU. They said they welcomed dogs, not dogs pissing inside.

DorisLessingsCat · 24/03/2021 17:50

I honestly don't know what planet some people are on! Of course you can have a reasonable expectation that dogs won't shit in your shop!

sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/03/2021 17:50

YABU.

If the dog isn't toilet trained, keep it outside.

pilates · 24/03/2021 17:51

YABU

You should have carried the puppy inside.

gettingusedtothelimelight · 24/03/2021 17:51

My dog once had a wee in Pets at Home. They couldn't have been nicer about it. Gave me all the stuff to clear it up. The garden centre doesn't really sound dog friendly.
