Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

@RootyT00t

....yes? And that still doesn’t explain the ludicrous comparisons between children and animals.

Deadringer · 24/03/2021 21:30

It seems you can't go anywhere now without having dogs, and their piss, foisted on you. Why bring the dog at all? Why bring your dog to a pet shop if you know it's going to piss on the floor? Why are some dog owners so weird?

dottycat123 · 24/03/2021 21:37

I was in a garden center on mother's day. All dogs allowed in on leads . A dog shit down one of the isles, the owner got a poo bag out picked it up leaving shit smears all over. I expected the owner to ask for disinfectant to clean up properly but she just walked out with a partner/friend.I couldn't believe it. I told the disinterested youth on the till who said he would call a cleaner but I wasn't convinced he really intended to.

Ladderclimber · 24/03/2021 21:39

You shouldn’t take a non toilet trained dog anywhere inside. That’s enormously obvious.

Also, what difference does it make that it’s a Chihuahua?! Their piss is no different to other dogs —and they are aggressive little buggers—

SquirtleSquad · 24/03/2021 21:50
@SquirtleSquad obviously.

But dogs can't either.

Your point ?
You said children can communicate, my point to you is that not all can for various reasons obviously Biscuit

RootyT00t · 24/03/2021 21:50

Well that is obvious, I'm not a total horror.

But on the whole, children can give more communication than dogs, was my point.

Rewis · 24/03/2021 21:57

I think dogs welcome implies that the dog should be house trained and well behaved.

So I don't think they were unreasonable to ask you to leave.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/03/2021 22:02

YABU.

I don’t know why, all of a sudden, dogs have to go everywhere. I don’t want to go into shops, cafes, pubs, garden centres etc where I might have to dodge some dog pee or worse. Why can’t they be left at home anymore?

I nearly went arse over tit in a puddle of dog piss when I took the guinea pig to the vet last time. I can understand that, dogs get nervous so it’s not their fault, but the selfish twat of an owner could have at least told the receptionists so it could’ve been cleaned up.

victoriaspongecake · 24/03/2021 22:04

How big a wee could a 17 week old chihuahua pup do? Especially as it had already weed twice before. A teaspoonful?🤔

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/03/2021 22:06

I agree you can’t take a dog that isn’t toilet trained into a shop. I’d have thought it went without saying.

If the dog had to come along, have I missed the bit where we find out why both you and your mum had to go inside the shop? Rather than one waiting outside with the dog?

CantSayJack · 24/03/2021 22:18

Let the dog piss in your own house.

Sitchervice · 24/03/2021 22:34

Did you tell them the pups age? They may have thought he was younger and hadn't had his vacations yet. Pups without full vaccines arnt often aloud in places (Dependent on place) were other dogs could be.

RedToothBrush · 24/03/2021 23:22

Clearly the OP saw the 'dogs welcome to piss everywhere' sign but not the one that said 'please shop alone cos there's a effing pandemic on'.
WithTeaTree · 24/03/2021 23:27

Tesco sells loo roll but I wouldn’t do my business in the aisle.

You’re clearly being unreasonable.

MintyMabel · 24/03/2021 23:27

Asked to leave because the dog made a mess - absolutely they did the right thing.

I suspect that was not the reason you were banned.

LaBellina · 24/03/2021 23:31

I think YABU.

Think of it this way, you probably welcome friend’s dogs at your home but would you be ok with one that pees in your home and the owner knows fully well it’s not potty trained?
I wouldn’t find this acceptable at all and I fully understand the garden centre....

BoJoHoNo · 24/03/2021 23:31

To be fair male dog piss is pretty pungent and has the potential to damage their stock. If the shop assisstant had seen your pup pee on the grass then proceed to wee on the shop floor just a few minutes later I can see why they asked you to leave. If you'd realised your error in judgment, been very apolgetic, explained you'd be cleaning up the mess once one of you took the puppy out of the shop, they probably wouldn't have felt the need to ban the dog from the premises. Even if you think a shop is or should be dog friendly, it's courteous to check with the staff first. Also reassures them that you're likely to be the type of person who will take responsibilty for your dog's behaviour (pay for any damages and make sure your dog isn't bothering other customers) whilst you're in their shop.

I also don't get the trend for taking your pet anywhere you feel like it. A couple of years back, I had a group of (fucking cruel) people try to bring their 'emotional support' rabbit (housed in a handbag) into my shop for an afternoon out in the middle of a heatwave.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/03/2021 23:32

puppy was probably weeing because he didn't want to be in the garden centre in the first place.

BooomShakeTheRoom · 24/03/2021 23:40

@LudoBear

Thanks. I guess we were unreasonable to not carry him in. However its not like we didn't clean up after him. We let him walk for a couple of minutes to help socialise him. He is very good with toilet training and only wees on grass usually! He doesn't wee in the house at all now.

I will continue to carry him from now on.

You took him to a garden centre to socialise him? A dog park would be more appropriate.

Selling did food doesn't equate to welcoming dogs in. My local pet shop sells horse equipment, yet you wouldn't be allowed to take your horse in.

YABU. Your dog made a mess and they asked you to leave. All very normal.

Lalliella · 24/03/2021 23:46

Are you insane? How can you possibly think it’s reasonable to take a pissing puppy into a shop? That’s disgusting. You are so far beyond unreasonable I can’t even put it into words.

NoProblem123 · 25/03/2021 00:06

A tiny dog pee is not pissing all over the place Grin

Maybe a dog had already ‘pissed all over the place’ and that’s what induced poor pup to lose all control.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 25/03/2021 00:12

And a tiny dog pee is no less wet,no more fragrant because the dog was tiny

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/03/2021 00:13

You are being ridiculously unreasonable.

1forAll74 · 25/03/2021 00:28

I went to a garden centre well before the pandemic. and I was walking around, choosing some bedding plants,. There was a woman in the same area, she had two Springer spaniel, both on leads. One of them did a huge poo on the walkway, but she just left the poo where it dropped, and carried on looking at the plants.. Then later on I saw her again, this time,on a graveled area, where the garden plant pots.and garden statues etc were. The other Spaniel did a poo in the gravel then. and both dogs did a pee up the garden pots quite a few times.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 25/03/2021 01:32

I'll go against the grain and say based on what what you have told us, YANBU @LudoBear (apart from the emphasis on the chihuahua part, an unexpected puddle of urine is still unpleasant whatever the size dog).

If a place welcomes dogs, imo you have to expect the occasional accident. No matter how well trained the dog, it can happen - in your case it sounds like your puppy got over excited (since he'd already been for a wee twice) and so perhaps wasn't ready yet to go to a new indoor? place where lots of other dogs have already been.

But while hasn't happened to me, I would do exactly what you did - apologise profusely, clean it up and tell someone/ask for anti bac spray. Banning your dog was completely over the top, unless it was a repeat offense.
