Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

I have had to clean up kids pee fairly frequently, a poo from a display WC approximately once a year! Parents didnt clean up after their DC or offer to either.
We allow dogs, I have never had to clean up after one yet. On the rare occasion a pup has had an accident the owners cleaned it up.
I know which customer I prefer.

I've got a Chihuahua and they are the worst for pissing especially if male and not neutered .Yabu

Trumplosttheelection · 24/03/2021 19:15

I would have thrown you out for having such a waste of space dog. Of all the breeds....ugh.

@Rillington

Why would you take a dog into a pet shop? They sell pet products it doesn't mean they want your dog in there.
To get a collar, coat or harness fitted correctly. To go to the vet (many pets at homes have in-store vets) To go to the groomer (see above) Socialisation with other dogs and people - as generally everyone in a pet shop is going to be tolerant and friendly to small puppies.

Lots of good reasons. And most pet shops actively encourage it.

Livelovebehappy · 24/03/2021 19:18

A lot of pubs, especially up in the Lakes, welcome dogs. But I guess they expect customers to use basic common sense, and not take in their animals if they’re not trained.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 24/03/2021 19:18

P.s advise your dm to get h done sooner rather than later. They mark so much its unbelievable

DorisLessingsCat · 24/03/2021 19:19
@DorisLessingsCat toilet trained children have accidents as well sometimes, like dogs they’re not perfect. I used to work in a shop and have often had to clean up wee and vomit from children, sometimes it can’t be helped, we didn’t ban them from the store.
There's a difference between genuine accidents (which parents can take measures to prevent) and a 17 week old puppy who is not reliably toilet trained. I don't know why you are arguing so vociferously as the OP has accepted she was BU.

PlanDeRaccordement · 24/03/2021 19:22

YABU
Only trained assistance/seeing eye dogs should be allowed. YABVU to think your disgusting dog can just go with you into a garden centre.

pretty sure the local equestrian supply store does not expect horses to tag along

itispersonal · 24/03/2021 19:26

I've taken my dog to garden centres and one time in the pet section they had a wee. I was mortified but asked a member of staff if they had anything for me to clean it up with and the member of staff said not to worry it happens a lot and he would sort it.

So yes I do think they were slightly OTT.

TheSparkleJar · 24/03/2021 19:27

I don’t want to shop somewhere liberally flooded with dog piss thanks.

It was a chihuahua with a half empty bladder, I don't think you'd need waders.

Cherryicecubes · 24/03/2021 19:27

They sell dried in Boots. Doesn’t mean they want groups of teens shagging by the sun cream...

Shnuffles · 24/03/2021 19:27

Obviously they don't want urine in their shop, but if dogs are allowed, it's bound to happen on the rare occasion. It's hardly the end of the world. Banning a specific puppy because he made a puppy-size puddle seems like an overreaction on their part, but now you know you can't trust him until he's grown a bit older and been trained.

Hellohello53452 · 24/03/2021 19:28

😂 and ?

BrownFootStool · 24/03/2021 19:29

Neither unreasonable. Puppies wee. You did what you could but they are also within their rights to ask you to take the puppy out.

SquirtleSquad · 24/03/2021 19:29

Keep your pissy puppy outside next time.

Suzi888 · 24/03/2021 19:30

YABU if the puppy isn’t yet reliably trained not to wee. The smells can be too much even for adult, fully house trained dogs! There’s always a spot somewhere...

HeyDemonsItsYaGirl · 24/03/2021 19:30

You don't take a non-toilet-trained dog into anybody's property. How on earth do you need this explained to you?

Minikievs · 24/03/2021 19:32

I can't believe you're annoyed they asked you to leave because your dog pissed on the floor!
Carry it if necessary, 17 weeks is really young

Sleepingdogs12 · 24/03/2021 19:33

I think if it says dogs welcome then it is a bit much to be so upset about a tiny puppy wee. If it hadn't said dogs welcome I would be with the shop people all the way. However you have learned your dog isn't reliable now so avoid this situation again until you can trust him .

MidsummersNightie · 24/03/2021 19:33

I don't get this trend for taking dogs into shops. When i was growing up you wouldn't dream of taking your dog shopping with you. Bloody madness

Hear hear! Bloody love well trained dogs. Had one myself. Walked miles over the fields with the little bugger. Shagged me out. It could outwalk me any day of the week despite being quite a small breed of Collie. But taking a dog into a garden centre? Why would you? It's not a treat for the dog in any way shape or form. So it's bored and pisses up a display stand.

Dogs do not belong in shops. If you want to keep a dog then you need to understand that dogs do not recognise human social norms. They might want to piss in shops to leave a scent because they are uncomfortable there.

If you choose to keep a dog, then you really should make sure they have sufficient outdoor activity for their breed.

Another close friend has a tiny handbag size Pomeranian. But it walks 5 miles a day and is not kept in a handbag. It is an adorable little dog. It has never been in a pet shop. Because there is no need for it to be there.

Diamondnights · 24/03/2021 19:35

It's incredible OP that you think it is ok to have your dog wee inside a shop. If he's too young to be reliably continent, he's too young to be taken in (unless carried).
