Today I was told to leave a garden centre..

Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

@mn81987

My dog is 2 and always wee's in pet shops- no where else. If they sell pet products and allow dogs in then they should expect that dogs will wee in there.
Rubbish!

I allow dogs in my house but I don't expect them to wee in it.

britnay · 24/03/2021 18:11

I don't get this trend for taking dogs into shops. When i was growing up you wouldn't dream of taking your dog shopping with you. Bloody madness.

boredbuttercup · 24/03/2021 18:11

If ‘dogs are welcome’ then it is unreasonable for them not to expect an occasional accident.

And many pubs say 'dogs are welcome' too. And are even prepared for an occasional accident (antibac etc on hand). But still after the accident its reasonable to ask that the offending animal leave as they've shown they can't keep control in an environment where they are expected to. It's not the dogs fault but other people still shouldn't be subjected to it. Just like plenty of places are 'child friendly' but still expect a reasonable level of behaviour from children depending on the environment (restaurant vs soft play) and if a child comes in and doesn't meet that expectation of behaviour then the parent is rightly asked to take the child out.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/03/2021 18:12

@NiceTwin

I would have just picked it up when I went in. Puppies can wee for England, I think it is a bit much to expect them not to at 17 weeks.
Same here.
mn81987 · 24/03/2021 18:12

@SoupDragon did you even read my post? My dog doesn't wee anywhere else inside! There's something about pet shops that makes them wee there! Lots of dog owners will say the same.

LudoBear · 24/03/2021 18:13

@Raaaaaaarr

Today I was told to leave a garden centre because my dog was pissing everywhere.

The real title.

Nope. Today I was told to leave a garden centre because my dog did a small wee. I cleaned up immediately and asked for anti bac spray.

SlothMama · 24/03/2021 18:13

Bit of both, I don't blame them for getting annoyed that your dog has had an accident. It doesn't matter the breed, it still pissed inside.

But if they allow dogs in then accidents can and will happen!

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 18:13

No business needs a pissy dog or it’s indignant owner who thinks her doggy woggy is entitled to piss wherever

DIshedUp · 24/03/2021 18:13

No one wants to go in a shop thats covered in dog piss. I dont think they would even want them pissing outside tbh, although less of an issue its still not ideal. The dog is 17 weeks, this was inevitable.

Garden centres aren't dog playpens. I dont really understand why people take their dogs into these places, yes they are technically dog friendly but it still doesn't mean its something I would want to do.

PintPot · 24/03/2021 18:14

My dog is 100% rock-solid house-trained. However if I took him to that garden centre and he smelled your dog's pee on a flowerpot he would instinctively cock his leg and mark it. Not peeing, marking. And pretty much every male dog following would do the same.

Apart from the hygiene issues, that's why they don't really want dogs peeing inside.

DIshedUp · 24/03/2021 18:15

Probably because they are covered in dog piss @mn81987

Dogs like to piss on piss

grapewine · 24/03/2021 18:15

I honestly don't know what planet some people are on! Of course you can have a reasonable expectation that dogs won't shit in your shop!

Exactly. I'm shocked people are arguing otherwise.

Rickpulltop · 24/03/2021 18:16

accidents happen. Ddog did a wee in pets at home and they were very understanding

PferdeMerde · 24/03/2021 18:16

What comments were you wanting, op? Did you want us all to curse the horrible mean garden centre? Hmm

Other shoppers don’t want to smell your dogs piss. Stop being entitled

DorisLessingsCat · 24/03/2021 18:17
@DorisLessingsCat It’s a garden centre that allows pets, not H&M, if they don’t want any accidents they shouldn’t allow dogs in. Most dogs won’t be able to tell the difference between a garden centre that’s presumably outdoors and a street, it was an accident and OP offered to clean it up. By your logic if a child has an accident in a shop it’s okay to ban them and the parents?
By my logic non toilet trained babies abs children would be wearing nappies when going into shops. Oh wait - they already do!

A 17 week old puppy will not be reliable in a garden centre. NB the OP said the puppy wee'd indoors. If you want to bring any dog into any retail premises you should be absolutely sure that it is fully, reliably trained. It's not rocket science.

MaMisled · 24/03/2021 18:17

There are clearly a lot of miserable, intolerant people about. There were kinder ways to have dealt with the matter. Who could be so annoyed at a 17 week old chihuahua?!

Viviennemary · 24/03/2021 18:18

Good. Go and wee in your own garden.

ThrowingAShellstrop · 24/03/2021 18:18

Yeah, you really shouldn’t be taking your puppy into buildings owned and frequented by other people until they’re fully house trained. It’s just common sense and good manners.

AntiSocialDistancer · 24/03/2021 18:18

YABU and you need to get to grips with good dog handling ettiquette and stop expecting people to accomodate to your puppy.

Theres a pandemic, they dont want to be cleaning piss off the floor at the best of times.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 24/03/2021 18:18

Yes I’d be annoyed . So cut the doggy woggy aren’t they so lovely
Pissy dogs and entitled adults it’s a bad combination

AntiSocialDistancer · 24/03/2021 18:19

Someone who has to go around and mop up after them repeatedly?
ThrowingAShellstrop · 24/03/2021 18:19

And what has being a chihuahua got anything to do with it? I have a big dog, it doesn’t piss inside.

OuiOuiKitty · 24/03/2021 18:19

@britnay

I've brought mine into petshop when I needed harnesses for them. Mine seem to be a funny shape as it's find one that fit right.
notlovinglockdownlife · 24/03/2021 18:20

YABU. You should have been carrying kitchen roll and cleaner yourself with a puppy that young, or as others have said, carried it. Hopefully you will do so in future or leave it at home.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/03/2021 18:20

It hadn't actually occurred to me that a dog would wee inside a shop, cafe, or restaurant etc. Mine never has. But maybe that's why a lot of places aren't dog friendly if so many people think if you invite dogs in you should accept wee and poo.

I think they were harsh to ban you. Ask you to leave maybe, but to ban you from returning again seems over the top
