Today I was told to leave a garden centre..

Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

No. YABU.

SarahBellam · 24/03/2021 18:23

Did you need the dog to choose the products itself? Why on earth would it need to be in there? Just what every business needs: a dog walking around pissing all over the floor. It’s disgusting and a hazard. Can’t think why a business owner wouldn’t want him there.

boredbuttercup · 24/03/2021 18:23

There are clearly a lot of miserable, intolerant people about. There were kinder ways to have dealt with the matter. Who could be so annoyed at a 17 week old chihuahua?!

They did deal with it kindly. The weren't rude to the OP or dog, simply asked, as the dog had already shown that it couldn't stop itself weeing inside despite already having had a wee, that it be taken outside so it doesn't do it again. Much like you don't get annoyed with a child who doesn't know any crying loudly in a library, but you still remove the child from the library once they do so because it's not fair on others also using the space.

And anyone getting paid minimum wage and then asked to clean up animal urine (and i bet that isn't in the job description for garden center worker) can be annoyed. They didn't yell or act unreasonably, but they sure are allowed to be annoyed at doing such a shit job for such little money.

@Raaaaaaarr

Today I was told to leave a garden centre because my dog was pissing everywhere.

The real title.

😂😂🤣 funny but true
SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/03/2021 18:24

I think that if a place says "Dogs Welcome" then they do need to expect the occasional wee - if only because where there is the scent of a number of strange dogs, many dogs, especially if unneutered, will "mark" the area.

However, an unhousetrained pup of this size - I'd just have carried it. Easier for me, safer for the dog - small dogs are always at risk of being trodden on in narrow spaces like shop aisles.

Elsiebear90 · 24/03/2021 18:25

@DorisLessingsCat toilet trained children have accidents as well sometimes, like dogs they’re not perfect. I used to work in a shop and have often had to clean up wee and vomit from children, sometimes it can’t be helped, we didn’t ban them from the store.

boredbuttercup · 24/03/2021 18:28

I think that if a place says "Dogs Welcome" then they do need to expect the occasional wee - if only because where there is the scent of a number of strange dogs, many dogs, especially if unneutered, will "mark" the area.

There's a world of difference between 'expect the occasional wee' and being prepared for it with stuff to clean it up, and allowing the wee-er to continue to prace around and possibly wee again (because they've already shown they can't be trusted not to wee inside). Once is an accident but after an accident happens you take steps to prevent it happening again, and the most obvious step is to ask that the dog who had the wee leave so that they don't do another where they shouldn't.

4Mongrels · 24/03/2021 18:28

Whilst your dog is still scent marking it’s not really acceptable to take him inside anywhere and put him down!

Hallyup5 · 24/03/2021 18:29

Don't know why everyone is comparing a garden centre to Pets at Home. It's not the same. The majority of people who go into garden centres are looking for garden products and have no tolerance for untrained dogs. They were absolutely right to ask you to leave. It was pretty nasty of you to allow the dog to piss on the grass outside too. Entitled and gross. Keep your dog under control.

yellowlorry123 · 24/03/2021 18:29

Chalk it up to experience and get some wipes , poo bags and anti Bac spray next time you take your puppy in a shop. But really, keep them at home until it's it trained.

Feedingthebirds1 · 24/03/2021 18:29

I think they were harsh to ban you. Ask you to leave maybe, but to ban you from returning again seems over the top

My reading of it was that the dog was banned, not the OP.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2021 18:29
@SoupDragon did you even read my post? My dog doesn't wee anywhere else inside! There's something about pet shops that makes them wee there! Lots of dog owners will say the same.
Yes, I did read it. I even quoted it. Not sure what your point is. You said that if they let dogs in they should expect them to wee there and that your dog always wees in the pet shop. Stop taking it there then or keep an eye on it.

MrsBerthaRochester · 24/03/2021 18:29

Yes Yabu! why do people expect to take their dogs everyday nowadays?! We never took our dog shopping or to the pub! My friend does it with her dog, insists on bringing him everywhere! I don't bring my DC's
I love dogs but they are animals and should be treated as such.

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 24/03/2021 18:29

@boredbuttercup I suppose if you look at it like that, you wouldn't take an unreliably potty trained toddler shopping without a nappy, just in case. Not nice for there to be wee on the floor where people are working or shopping or whatever.

Sorry you had this experience though OP. It won't be long until your mums dog is a little older and okay to hold it longer

LudoBear · 24/03/2021 18:30

I won't be replying again as I accept I was wrong. However, I did not expect anybody else to clear up the wee. Pup did not wee against anything as doesnt cock his leg yet. I mentioned breed as chihuahuas do smaller wees than labradors so hardly "peeing everywhere"

Thanks for all the replies.

OP posts:
sleepylittlebunnies · 24/03/2021 18:31

How big a wee does a chihuahua do? Surely a tiny amount. Maybe either carry it or carry a packet of antibacterial wipes just in case.

SoupDragon · 24/03/2021 18:31

This is a shining example of entitled dog owners "they should expect my dog to piss in their shop!" 🙄

I have a dog. 1) I don't take him into shops and 2) I watch him like a hawk in places like the vet's waiting area

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 24/03/2021 18:32

I welcome visitors into my house......

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/03/2021 18:32

I mentioned breed as chihuahuas do smaller wees than labradors so hardly "peeing everywhere"

I must admit, I thought - "There'll only be about a teaspoon - especially if s/he's already riddled outside - twice.

SongSilkTrainspot · 24/03/2021 18:35

@NiceTwin

I would have just picked it up when I went in. Puppies can wee for England, I think it is a bit much to expect them not to at 17 weeks.
Exactly, so don't take it for walks round shops!
Derbee · 24/03/2021 18:37

@LaurieFairyCake

If they say dogs welcome then it's weird they didn't have antibac spray Confused

Why are they saying dogs welcome if they're not Confused

You sure you didn't get a bit defensive and argumentative ? - and you definitely need to carry this stuff when you have a dog - spray/tissues/bottle of water/poo bags

Places tend to say “well behaved dogs” are welcome. That implies not weeing and pooing in the shop
sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/03/2021 18:38

I mentioned breed as chihuahuas do smaller wees than labradors so hardly "peeing everywhere'

But the size of the dog is irrelevant. Once one dog pees, they all follow. It's why dogs scent mark on lamposts/walls - it's how they all communicate with each other.

Anti-bacterial wipes won't do anything to get rid of the enzymes, either - you need a proper pet cleaner to do that.

EvilEye · 24/03/2021 18:40

I had no idea dogs were allowed in garden centres at all!

Candyfloss99 · 24/03/2021 18:43

Of course you don't bring your untrained puppy into a shop to piss everywhere. Would you let your untoilet trained toddler run about a shop without a nappy?

l2b2 · 24/03/2021 18:45

Where have you been living @EvilEye ? It's one of the benefits of Dobbies.
I think it's a bit of an overreaction tbh, probably the tiniest bit of wee given it's a chihuahua puppy. Probably best to carry him next time OP.
