Aibu?

Went to a local garden centre with my mum which sells pet products. Had my mums 17 week old puppy with me. Walked around the outside part first and puppy did two wees on the grass. Took him inside and he decided to do another wee. Very embarrassed as he had already done 2 and wouldnt have let him walk inside if he hadn't recently done. Anyway, my mum went off to the toilets to get some loo roll, both dry to clean up and wet to wash the area. Then I went to find a member of staff to see if they had any anti bac spray I could use. Rather than giving me some, I was told to take the dog out as it wasn't trustworthy. Explained he had already done 2 wees so this wasn't expected. Was still told to leave and the dog was banned from the place. This was a small independent garden centre not a big chain company. Oh the offending dog? A chihuahua!

Aibu to think if you sell pet products, it's expected people will bring their dogs in (signs say dogs welcome) and occasional their maybe be a accident.

@Elsiebear90

YANBU, they can’t expect to let dogs in without some of them weeing or pooing in there, it’s what dogs do and as a dog owner you can’t really stop them, especially a young puppy. You kindly let them know and offered to clean it up, they were being very unreasonable imo.
Bollocks.
LadyCatStark · 24/03/2021 17:52

Did it expressly say dogs welcome? Our local garden centre sells dog products but is never expect to see a dog in there! It doesn’t matter what the breed is, you can’t just let your dog see all over a shop!

MrMeSeeks · 24/03/2021 17:53

Yes pets welcomed, just not piss.
Carry him until he’s toilet trained

Tinydinosaur · 24/03/2021 17:54

Of course they can expect people's dogs not to piss in the shop. If I tell you you're welcome to bring your dog to my house does that mean I have to accept your dog pissing and shitting in my house? No.
If your dog can't reliably not piss inside then it shouldn't be in the shop or should be carried. I don't really think it's OK for dogs to piss in the outside bit of the shop either tbh. If everyone did it it would stink and be covered in piss and people wouldn't want to buy stuff.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 24/03/2021 17:54

@gettingusedtothelimelight

My dog once had a wee in Pets at Home. They couldn't have been nicer about it. Gave me all the stuff to clear it up. The garden centre doesn't really sound dog friendly.
I think a dedicated pet shop is very different from a garden centre that just happens to sell pet products, though. My dog has also peed in Pets at Home but before we came in, we said he was only young and not fully trained and they said not to worry. I wouldn't just assume it was okay to take a puppy that wasn't fully trained in a shop, no matter how dog-friendly they claim to be.

And unfortunately, once one dog pees, they all tend to follow! So I'm not surprised the garden centre wants to avoid a constant stream of dogs marking the same spot.

Mayvis · 24/03/2021 17:55

Reminds me of watching a dog wee all over a Christmas decoration display - owner oblivious and didn’t believe me when I told her. Grim.

Dellow · 24/03/2021 17:55

If ‘dogs are welcome’ then it is unreasonable for them not to expect an occasional accident. However I would personally be hesitant about taking a very young dog into places as I would be mortified if they did something. BUT it is so quick and easy to clean up ! So I think it was a bit of a ridiculous over reaction really .

SoWhyNot · 24/03/2021 17:55

This thread has put me off ever buying something that’s on the floor in a garden centre that allows dogs (other than guide dogs etc).

Mayvis · 24/03/2021 17:55
  • decoration display in a garden centre.
Aloethere · 24/03/2021 17:56

I would have picked it up too esp as it is a small one. I always did that when mine were small. Puppies are unpredictable esp when it comes to toileting. Having said that if they let dogs in they should be prepared for the odd pee here and there.

Everythingiswonderful · 24/03/2021 17:56

As a lab owner of 15 years I’ve never understood why people feel the need to drive their dog and take it into a pet shop or any kind of shopping area tbh. The last person I saw strutting round a retail park soon left with a tail between his legs when his lab crapped in the middle of the walkway!

I honestly don't know what planet some people are on! Of course you can have a reasonable expectation that dogs won't shit in your shop!
I agree with you @DorisLessingsCat

Elsiebear90 · 24/03/2021 17:57

@DorisLessingsCat It’s a garden centre that allows pets, not H&M, if they don’t want any accidents they shouldn’t allow dogs in. Most dogs won’t be able to tell the difference between a garden centre that’s presumably outdoors and a street, it was an accident and OP offered to clean it up. By your logic if a child has an accident in a shop it’s okay to ban them and the parents?

HowAboutAH0tCupOfShutTheHellUp · 24/03/2021 17:58

YABU

Obviously!

But the puppy peed inside - it's right there in the opening post.

Shops also have the right to ban anyone they like as long as it's not discriminatory to do so.

give over
GracieLouFreebushh · 24/03/2021 18:00

I don't know who would take their dog in a shop knowing it isn't 100% trained - that's just bad manners in my opinion!! (And yes I've had dogs)

LudoBear · 24/03/2021 18:03

Thanks. I guess we were unreasonable to not carry him in. However its not like we didn't clean up after him. We let him walk for a couple of minutes to help socialise him. He is very good with toilet training and only wees on grass usually! He doesn't wee in the house at all now.

I will continue to carry him from now on.

OP posts:
Elsiebear90 · 24/03/2021 18:03

@sunflowersandbuttercups ahh I think I read it wrong and thought OP meant the dog weed outside the garden centre and then she took him in and he weed again, not that he weed inside the garden centre on the outside and inside part. I do think that she should have carried him around the inside part as he’s so young, but the garden centre should be prepared for accidents if they allow dogs in anyway. If I was prepared for dogs to wee or poo inside my premises I wouldn’t allow them in, accidents happen and animals aren’t perfect.

mn81987 · 24/03/2021 18:04

My dog is 2 and always wee's in pet shops- no where else. If they sell pet products and allow dogs in then they should expect that dogs will wee in there.

Elsiebear90 · 24/03/2021 18:04

*wasn’t prepared

Flowerlane · 24/03/2021 18:05

Our local garden centre banned dogs just before Christmas because they had too many dogs toileting inside. It’s ruined it for the rest of us.

Cadent · 24/03/2021 18:07

No, they don't have to accept pissing dogs!

Bad enough we have to deal with dog shit on streets let alone pissing dogs in garden centres.

Raaaaaaarr · 24/03/2021 18:08

Today I was told to leave a garden centre because my dog was pissing everywhere.

The real title.

Caffè Nero will allow dogs in. I doubt they want them pissing everywhere.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 24/03/2021 18:10

I once saw a guy with a puppy on the tube. The dog was sitting in the seat next to him. Very cute, getting lots of attention. Then it did a wee all over the seat. The guy looked at it, picked the dog up, and got off at the next stop! So I would say any shops, and public transport, should be avoided until the puppy is completely trained.
