My new neighbour is a convicted murderer

Have recently found out from another neighbour further up the street that my new next door neighbour has spent 4 years in prison for man slaughter of another man. I was sceptical so I googled his name. I saw all the newspaper articles about him. He had a fight and killed another man.
Don't know the reasons for the fight but I can't help but wonder if it was one of those cases of a one punch kill. Or maybe he stamped his head?

I am horrified that this man lives next to me. I now don't want my children to mix with his children anymore. I know some will say he's done his time, but imagine if it was your son he killed? It makes me sick to my stomach.

Should someone have notified us in some way about him moving there? Or maybe not as he's done his time and isn't a sex offender.

AIBU or would you be horrified as well? AIBU to tell my children to stay away from the house altogether. (I know it's covid now but I'm thinking in the future)

Manslaughter is very different to murder.

But yes this would make me nervous as well

UrsulaBee · 14/03/2021 19:58

Yabu

YANBU to be concerned, but YABU to be speculating like this.

Markies · 14/03/2021 19:58

Convicted of manslaughter not murder.

NeverMetANiceOne · 14/03/2021 19:59

I have to admit, I wouldn't be thrilled. Maybe just give him a wide berth and keep to yourselves if you don't feel comfortable around them.

How is it speculation? He killed a man from a fight.

So he's not a convicted murderer, he was convicted of manslaughter?

He has served his time and he and his children have to live somewhere.

Hadjab · 14/03/2021 20:00

Are you worried that his kids playing with your kids will turn them into murderers?

Nothing to be done, you can try to limit yourself and your kids contact but you have moral standing in complaining.

He's obviously got no regard for human life that's for sure. You don't just die from a fight unless one persons takes it too far.

Typo: you have NO moral standing in complaining

WisnaeMe · 14/03/2021 20:02

Is he housed under MAPPA ?

Floralnomad · 14/03/2021 20:03

Surely if you’ve read all the articles about it you know how the other person was killed ?

FourEyesGood · 14/03/2021 20:03

You said “I can’t help but wonder if...” and “maybe”. That’s speculating. Yes, a man died and he was found guilty of manslaughter, but you’re not helping anyone (least of all yourself) by wondering about the specific circumstances. Why did your mind immediately leap to a ‘one-punch kill’? That’s oddly specific.

Bleughbleughbleugh12 · 14/03/2021 20:03

@murdernextdoor disagree with that, one punch in the wrong place and it could well be game over unfortunately 😕 I’d be wary but not too worried as a PP said at least it wasn’t a woman and a premeditated attack

Amber2022 · 14/03/2021 20:04

There are lots of people with a criminal history and I'm sure lots of people who wish they could turn back the clock.

I am also a parent, I've never even had a speeding fine...but did work in a bail hostel. Don't want to alarm you but there are all sorts of people that commit crimes that haven't been convicted and also lots who have. There may well be others around that you come into contact with who have done all sorts of things. I wouldn t get yourself in a twist. He more than likely just wants a quiet life x

Reinventinganna · 14/03/2021 20:05

You don’t know what happened. It could have been anything. Maybe he was protecting a child? Maybe he saw someone attacking a female? Maybe he’s a violent arse?

I’m guessing the fact he has his children in his care indicates that he is not a risk to children.

user1471462428 · 14/03/2021 20:05

I know someone who killed someone. His children are gorgeous innocent people and I’m our children are friends. I’m always wary letting them play with new people, they don’t deserve to be judged by their father’s actions. Whilst I wouldn’t ask him to babysit I don’t mind them playing together in the playground. There are plenty of people who have done awful things that you don’t know about op.

Because a good friend of my DH had this happen to him. He didn't die but was left permanently brain damaged and in a wheel chair.

YABU
If nobody had told you and you hadn't known, how would you feel about your children mixing with his?

How long ago was it? He has done his time. Or do you believe that people should be tarred and feathered and driven out of town, to be shunned forever more?

sunflowersandbuttercups · 14/03/2021 20:06

Of course you can. All it takes is for someone to hit the wrong spot, or to land in the wrong place/at the wrong angle and that's it.

Easterbunnygettingready · 14/03/2021 20:08

My neighbour killed a man. Manslaughter. Only because it's harder to prove murder... He was a weasly coward and I certainly am not scared of him...
No need to make a big deal op... Just give him a wide berth...

Givemeabreak88 · 14/03/2021 20:08

Why are your children playing with his at the moment anyway? Unless you are not in the U.K.

StellaKowalski · 14/03/2021 20:09

Bit unfair on the kids isn't it?
