Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

I know someone who won 40k per year for life on a scratchcard and another who won a million. Does that count?

willibald · 11/03/2021 12:08

One of my first cousins won half a million on lottery. He bought a house and gave deposit money to his two kids.

AryaStarkWolf · 11/03/2021 12:09

A neighbour of mine won over 6 million a couple of years ago

isthismylifenow · 11/03/2021 12:09

I think the same as you OP. I don't know anyone who has.

I am not in the UK, if that matters, but whenever there is a big announcement of a huge win, its is always someone who is living in poverty, is a widow or has had some hardship. Never just an average Joe Bloggs.

bettertimesarecomingnow · 11/03/2021 12:10

Colleague won 30k on the post code lottery

But don't know of any one else

Loopyloututu2 · 11/03/2021 12:10

Yes, I know someone who won around half a million (in a syndicate) and a distant family member (DH’s cousins husbands parents!) who won several million. The ones who won half a million have spent it wisely, bought a nicer house etc and are very happy. The ones who won several million paid off their close family members mortgages, which long story short led to ructions and basically broke down lots of the families relationships irreparably, sadly.
When I heard some of the fallout from it all I couldn’t believe how some people could be so ungrateful and entitled. DH’s cousin and her husband had a horrible breakup as a direct result of it all.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 11/03/2021 12:10

Our neighbour won something like £4 million over a decade ago.

Insert1x20p · 11/03/2021 12:13

Yes- friend of a friend won well over 1 million. Sadly, he drank it all. Not a good thing to have happened to him as he was already a functioning alcoholic and the win robbed him of his need to be functioning.

riotlady · 11/03/2021 12:15

Personally if I won I would keep it a secret, so maybe we all know someone and they've done the same!

Whitney168 · 11/03/2021 12:15

I know someone who won £2 million. Know them personally, family members know them very well, so not urban myth.

WhySoSensitive · 11/03/2021 12:17

My dads uncle won big, he emigrated to Australia and hasn’t spoken to anyone since!

Soundbyte · 11/03/2021 12:21

Worked with someone who won around 6m. She quit immediately but paid for a party for the rest of us staff and paid for the wedding of another colleague who had just got engaged.

The best bit was that it came right after her divorce was granted from her shitty husband who ditched her (and the kids) at Christmas and he wasn’t eligible for a penny Grin

CoffeeBeansGalore · 11/03/2021 12:24

Yes. All over 10 years ago though. An aquaintence''s parents won just over 4 million. A girl I knew, her sister won £60K. A village near us has several people who have won over a million. I'm still waiting for my turn . . . 😁

StrawberrySquash · 11/03/2021 12:29

Not personally, but a former colleague's aunt won as part of a syndicate and gave him a house deposit.

Rillington · 11/03/2021 12:29

I know someone who won £125,000. He spent the lot very quickly.

2020iscancelled · 11/03/2021 12:30

Yes, an old bfs previous ex - her parents won £1m on lottery 10+ years ago

flappityflippers1 · 11/03/2021 12:31

My uncle won £17k years and years ago. That’s the only person I know or have heard of. I don’t really bother doing it now

Camomila · 11/03/2021 12:32

A boy at secondary school's parents won either 40k or 400k (can't remember which), it was very exciting gossip for a week.

Oooohbehave · 11/03/2021 12:33

My friend won about £30k in a work syndicate about 20 years ago. Paid off her student debt and went towards a deposit on a flat.

MeadowViews · 11/03/2021 12:33

A friend won 15k from a This Morning competition.

RunHobbitRun · 11/03/2021 12:34

A couple a little older than me from my village won £250,000 they were delighted because it gave them a chance at private IVF treatment which was successful.

I don't know of any bigger winners though.

celerysticks · 11/03/2021 12:51
