Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

I do!! She won at least £1m. I didn’t ask exactly how much. She left work and then came back again when she got bored. She’s still the same person and lives just as she did before. She did eventually retire early. She’s in her 50s now.

crazylikechocolate · 11/03/2021 17:04

One of my customers won quite early on, I think he was in a syndicate of 5 but one hadn't done it that week ( he had spent the money in the pub instead !) and so it was split 4 ways , think they each had around 4 m

demelza82 · 11/03/2021 17:17

There's a young family near me that built a grand-designs style house with their lottery win - they were trying to keep it secret but the person that sold them the land was loose lipped so they ended up having to install a massive security system apparently.

Not long after it all started in the 90s I knew a man locally who won on one of those weeks where loads of people won one same numbers so the winnings were not in the millions. Sadly he was very troubled and drank himself to death

2018SoFarSoGreat · 11/03/2021 17:22

18 year old across the road from us won 508,000 in 1976. They were a poor family (in a big fancy house) and I will always remember going to see their newest baby (several children) and it was in a drawer as a bed.

Caused all sorts of family problems for them, and I remember my mum feeding the eldest daughter quite some time after the big win. She was a poor soul, who did not benefit from the win!

SplendidSuns1000 · 11/03/2021 17:23

I bought a lottery ticket at the same time as a friend- I won £10 and she won 13 million. It was about a week after her divorce from an abusive man was finalised.

Chimpfield · 11/03/2021 17:23

A friend of mine won £3 million and died of cancer a couple of moths later.

noeffingwayyyy · 11/03/2021 17:24

When I was young a friends parents won about 200k, this was early nineties.

In early 2000s an acquaintance won £350k, I was so jealous!!

MargosKaftan · 11/03/2021 17:25

The housemate's mum of a uni boyfriend won £1m. They paid off their mortgage, bought cars and houses for their dcs (in late 90s when this was perfectly doable).

In the early 00s, my Nana's neighbour's daughter's exH (if you follow that!) Won the Big one on a double rollover - a few months after their divorce was sorted. Apparently she tried to see if there was any way she could get any of it but wasn't successful.

More recently I've not heard anything, but most people would keep it quiet. Unless you were very young, wouldn't most people just presume you had a well paying job if you bought a big house and nice cars?

FuckyouBrennan · 11/03/2021 17:28

My parents won 500,000 in 2000 and an employee of my husband won 30,000 last year.

Chimeraforce · 11/03/2021 17:29

No

EL8888 · 11/03/2021 17:29

Yep. A work colleague won £100k herself, through a syndicate with friends. She used it as a chance to get on the housing ladder and to re-train in a different career

BigSandyBalls2015 · 11/03/2021 17:33

A neighbour won £100 million a couple of years ago.

Phoenix99 · 11/03/2021 17:33

I know a few. My former neighbough won £8mil, a colleague's dad won £6mil, another colleague's husband won around £300k as part of a syndicate. I also know 2 people who won big on the postcode lottery. One won £55k and the other just shy of half a mil. I can't even win a quid on a scratch card.

1forAll74 · 11/03/2021 17:33

I know someone who won £80.000 on a scratch card a few years ago. after never buying one in his life before. He bought it on a whim, whilst waiting for someone to get served at the till in a small corner shop, he was just gazing around, and his eyes focused on the scratch cards near the till, so he decided to buy just one card.

It just reminded me of win on the lottery years ago, My late Mum, used to collect all the lottery money from all the people in her warden controlled flat, 38 people in all, in a syndicate. she was the one who checked all the results. One week, they had won £ 3000, and all the ladies went a bit mad at this win, They were all aged between 70 and 90 years old, and couldn't get over this big win, shared between all of them.. They had a big special coffee morning in their lounge area, to chat about their big win, one elderly lady went out and bought a load of cream cakes for everyone, and probably spent all the winnings ha ha.

@Totallyfedup1979

I didn’t win.

I'm sorry Sad

I know of someone who won 9 million when the lottery first started. He used it wisely from what I can gather, and now has a successful business.

I also know someone who won 1 million on a scratch card.

Evenstar · 11/03/2021 17:39

Someone I know won a million on a scratch card last year.

TheBullfinch · 11/03/2021 17:39

I know someone who won £250,000 in 1995. He bought a better house.

Since then, nothing. Ive only ever won a tenner!

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 11/03/2021 18:04

A boy (think he was still a teen) from a rough-ish estate near me won a sizeable amount. He bought a few houses on the estate for friends and family then blew the rest on cars, bikes, drugs and alcohol- singlehandedly turning the place into a ghetto with drag racing, loud parties and drug dealing. Felt sorry for his neighbours who owned as he decimated their property prices and ruined their lives.

cptartapp · 11/03/2021 18:08

As a district nurse the pharmacy team we used won the jackpot in the first year, so big money. Most of the staff retired and the pharmacist bought the business.
Our syndicate won £20k a few years back. About £1k each.

mamaduckbone · 11/03/2021 18:10

My mum won £5k so not quite as much as you said but a decent-ish amount. I'm sure she paid much more than that into it over the years.

Birdy84 · 11/03/2021 18:11

My parents won a Few million on a lucky dip ticket they only bought as it was a rollover!

Slidepastthevoid · 11/03/2021 18:13

My exes Aunt was part of a syndicate that won big, and the guy who actually had the ticket betrayed them all - took the money and ran off into the sunset!

PhilCornwall1 · 11/03/2021 18:14

The parents of a friend of mine from my school days won. I don't know how much, but it enabled them to buy a pretty large house, knock it down and have a new one built and very nice it is. They haven't worked since and have "his and hers" Mercs.

I guess they did ok with the win.

Justcallmebebes · 11/03/2021 18:17

Had a client who won £1m on a scratchcard and a friend's mum won £1m on lottery. I've never won a bean 😢
