Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

My best friend from school's parents won £500,000 shortly after we'd sat our GCSEs. He wasn't terribly academic (more down to a lack of enthusiasm rather than ability), but they paid for him to attend an expensive school for his 'A'-Levels and funded private Tutors which enabled him to get far higher results than he would have done otherwise. He was then off to a RG University (debt free) and the knock-on effect has been that he is now a Technology Lawyer for a global brand, based in the UAE and earning a fortune. His parents' win - more specifically, their decision to use a chunk of it to fund his education - mean that he has a far more lucrative career than he could probably have hoped for without it.

StrawberryFizz26 · 11/03/2021 23:06

My Nan won nearly 14k on the postcode lottery.

msby · 11/03/2021 23:26

A friend won a large jackpot, went public and then ditched all but her very closest friends for fear people were after money.

My parents won just under 10k a few years ago.

MorePotatoSalad · 11/03/2021 23:27

I know someone who won 20k doing online poker. Spent on booze and holidays Hmm. Bet they regret that now.

GoodMumBadMum · 11/03/2021 23:42

I feel like I'll probably win the euromillions tomorrow (it must be my turn by now!)

nanny2012nanny · 11/03/2021 23:57

Yes my mates dad £4million
They kept it shhhhhh and he’s just bought her a house for £500k

XelaM · 12/03/2021 00:01

My best friend won the £50,000 jackpot on a Polish lottery she played online via lottoland. I would not have believed it if it didn't happen to my closest friend. And believe it or not, prior to winning she was obsessed with "The Secret" (the whole law of attraction theory) and winning the lottery and then 6 months later she won.

Thedogscollar · 12/03/2021 00:04

When we moved to our village somebody in next road won big in the lottery and in the Post office there are the big wins on a notice board. Someone won 10 grand on a scratch card.

Biker47 · 12/03/2021 04:34

Someone I worked with, their partner won £20k on the raffle part of the lotto, when they do 20 or so winners of £20k for a Christmas draw or something.

Most I've ever won from the lotto is just over £100. If I ever won big, two of the things I would definitely do is, not go public with Camelot (big cheque, champagne bollocks); I don't really want photos of me taking the bin out, to be plastered over the Daily Mail online's website for years on end, and I'd never reveal to any friends or family, how much or when I won the lottery, it's just easy that way, kerbs expectations and reduces animosity, I think it's wise to keep it as private as possible.

A work colleague a few years ago gave their child a lottery ticket for their birthday, they won 500k and bought a house.

fairydustandpixies · 12/03/2021 05:47

I went to school with someone who won a million on the pools (showing my age!) the first time he played it aged 16. My neighbour won £10k on the postcode lottery a few months before I moved in. She still has the giant prop cheque in her lounge 😁

Oysterbabe · 12/03/2021 05:48

My dad won 40k on the football pools about 10 years ago.

celerysticks · 12/03/2021 09:09

The thread has given me hope 😂

I've bought a euro millions ticket for tonight haha

I win £20 last week .... 🤣

tarapinn · 12/03/2021 09:46

A colleague won £11 million on the national lottery. Gave up her job the next day! Smile

ChristmasFluff · 12/03/2021 10:49

Same here, @tarapinn.

Distant colleague won a couple of million in the 1990s. Never came back to work. We were all really pleased, she was a carer approaching retirement and I'm sure she and her husband enjoyed it wisely

orchidsonabudget · 12/03/2021 10:53

I stopped playing when I read it described as a tax for stupid people 👀

Iwantacookie · 12/03/2021 11:02

Someone I went to school with won £250,000 on a scratch card. She brought a house and now work as a receptionist. Lovely lady.

celerysticks · 14/03/2021 08:58

I won £30 last night! The most I've ever won Grin

This thread has obviously brought me good luck!

I didn't win anything. Back to work I guess 😭😂

MyGorramShip · 14/03/2021 09:16

A close school friend won £100,000 on a scratch card. It was interesting to watch how many people thought they were “entitled” to some of the money.

Luckily she takes no shit Grin, she paid her mortgage off (50k, ex council house that she bought for 120k), went on a ridiculously expensive holiday to Disney in Florida with her DD and her Mum, upgraded her car, did some bits to the house and now has a comfortable 10K cushion.

She also wouldn’t mind me posting this.

When I was in primary school (a good 27 years ago), a friends parents won £250,000 on the Lottery. No clue what that would be equivalent to today.

Baws · 14/03/2021 20:18

I won £140 recently so over the amount your friend mentioned but hardly life changing! 😂 If I did win a significant amount I would only tell a select few.

PaperMonster · 14/03/2021 20:23

I won £2.5K.

A colleague who I worked with many years ago won £10k the week scratch cards were released.

SingleHandSue · 14/03/2021 20:45

We won £30 last night too!

My aunt and uncle are very wealthy because of a business they sold for millions. They used to live in a huge 7 bed house in the country.

We were at a party at theirs and was introduced to their next door neighbour (next door also being a huge 7 bed house) he was single, in his 20s and worked at the same supermarket as MIL.

Afterwards we asked how on earth this young supermarket worker could have such an amazing lifestyle, he’d won £2m at an online poker tournament.
