Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

My SIL mum and dad won 500k. They retired early and moved to the coast and bought a very plain bungalow. For some reason the fact they didn't splash out a bit more and get one with a sea view has always bothered the rest of the family Smile

FOJN · 11/03/2021 12:59

Distant relative won 2.75 million years ago. Distant because of divorce from an arsehole who remained in the family. The person who won was lovely, I was delighted for them after the years of abuse they endured.

celerysticks · 11/03/2021 13:05

Ahh these stories are making me feel less of a dick for buying a ticket each week... my friend was trying to convince me I'll never win and I was stupid for playing! (which I know is probably true and there are much better things to do with my money but it's nice to dream isn't it??!)

The most I've ever won is a tenner Confused

Yes ... my mum. She won £250K on the Rollerball draw (I think that's what it was called). She and dad celebrated by buying a new three piece suite ... something she'd wanted for ages but felt she couldn't afford. She was nearly 80 at the time.

FangsForTheMemory · 11/03/2021 13:14

This reminds me of a someone I knew whose niece's ex husband won the lottery. He gave her half although and splashed out on a second hand Ford Escort for himself.

ladygindiva · 11/03/2021 13:15

I knew a guy who won 100k and bought a fast car and crashed it and died a few months later. Very sad.

ginghamtablecloths · 11/03/2021 13:15

A colleague of a neighbour won a decent amount on the lottery a few years ago, lucky bastard.

willithappen · 11/03/2021 13:15

I won £106 at the weekend if that counts 😂 it's over the £50/60 you mentioned

That's the most I have won on lotto though. Oh how I'd love to win a bit more. 250k to buy my house is all I'd ask for

Ofalltheginjoints · 11/03/2021 13:22

Must be going back to the early 2000’s but a women I knew by sight from when I worked in the village shop whilst doing my A-Levels won something like 15m on the Euromillions, she was a very nice lady and on good terms with her ex husband who was delighted for her about her win.

I moved away a year or so afterwards so don’t know what she ended up doing

ginghamtablecloths · 11/03/2021 13:22

Oh, I remember I won £88 in a works syndicate about ten years ago. DH said, Big deal' when I told him as he thought I meant that it was between ten of us. No, it was each. Still waiting for the really big one though.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 11/03/2021 13:23

My work syndicate won around 30k ten years ago. There were so many of us though that it worked out at about £800 each. Costs £10 a month, so I've paid more than I've won. I'm paying for the daydreams though, they're worth it Grin

crosbyrose · 11/03/2021 13:24

I work for an investment firm and we get a lot of lottery winners investing their winnings. It definitely happens because we get the proof of the source of the funds.

DeliaOwens · 11/03/2021 13:28

Yes, I know someone who won a very large amount. She is from a family who own a lot of land and are not at all badly off. The money she won, she used to help her siblings with property but also bought land from her father and got planning to buy a small development of houses. She is set up for life. She won't live a rockstar lifestyle but will never have to worry about money again.

My mother's cousin won £1m.

Paid off their house, bought a new car, and the rest will fund their retirement.

heidihigh · 11/03/2021 13:35

Yeah a neighbour of mine won a few million on a syndicate at their work. Think they ended up with about £350k each

VapeVamp12 · 11/03/2021 13:36

Yes my husbands colleague won £1.6 million last year. Neither of them left their jobs and seemed to have just carried on as they were before.

Mydarlingsleepthief · 11/03/2021 13:40

I won £1000 on a scratch card a few years ago!

Fernie6491 · 11/03/2021 13:41

Yes, my late in-laws cleaning lady's parents won £9 million, in the very early days of the lottery. It enabled them to buy a house for each of their children.

So it does genuinely happen!

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 11/03/2021 13:43

I have a friend whose BIL won a very substantial amount, as in millions - since winning his marriage ended and he doesn't speak to his family

Deadringer · 11/03/2021 13:45

I know someone who won about a million on the irish lotto twice! Well, i knew his son. He was a medical consultant and well off anyway, i heard that he spent about 100 pounds a week on tickets at the time but i am not sure if thats true.

Seriously79 · 11/03/2021 13:45

Yes! My aunty won £1 million on a scratch card on Christmas Eve a few years back.

The hangover was amazing! And she was very generous x

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 11/03/2021 13:45
