Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

Someone a couple of towns over from me won a few years ago... Her partner has just been arrested for her murder ...

Sakura7 · 11/03/2021 15:25

My friend's work colleague won about 10 million on the Irish lotto. She came in the next morning, cleared out her desk and walked out. So jealous!

KirstenBlest · 11/03/2021 15:28

I know someone who knows someone who won more than £10 million. They weren't exactly poor before winning.

PizzaBreath · 11/03/2021 15:32

I know a syndicate who got the big win! Think they got just under a million each, absolutely life changing and lovely to see. They worked at a chemist and all continued working but just a lot happier and less stressed out.

I knew another guy who won about 300k. I figure no chance for me as the odds are against me now!

LindaEllen · 11/03/2021 15:33

DP's friend won a million and just blew it on rubbish. My Aunty won £20,000 and got an extension.

Hailtomyteeth · 11/03/2021 15:37

I knew a couple who were in syndicate at their social club. They won £72k, but this was in the late 90s, when it was a half decent amount of money. Both had recently taken early retirement plus redundancy and were mortgage free.

They gave some to both their adult children and basically drank the rest. They were both dead within 10 years.

huggzy · 11/03/2021 15:48

My great aunt won some money on the lottery, I don't remember how much as I was only little at the time.

Iseeyoulookingatme · 11/03/2021 15:49

Yes a friends dad won the lottery.

myBumJuiceSmellsLikeRoses · 11/03/2021 15:52

I worked with somebody who bought a scratchcard that won a tenner, so he bought 5 more and one of them won him £10,000.

Missreginafalange · 11/03/2021 16:00

Yes a college friend (now an acquaintance, still have them on Facebook) their brother one the jackpot £7mil back in the early days when it first started approx 20 years ago....

Dontlickthetrolley · 11/03/2021 16:08

I know someone who won about £500k but I'm not supposed to know so was never acknowledged or discussed!

Someone at work won a car and cash from a This Morning phone in a few years back, very nice Mercedes parked in the car park most days

I'm in charge of our office syndicate, there are 17 people in it, most don't work with us anymore but don't want to leave the syndicate, just in case. We used to average £30 a month winnings, we're lucky if we get £2.50 these days!

2bazookas · 11/03/2021 16:27

Yes, I know two couples who both won multi millions in the lottery , and two other people who both won 100K on premium bonds

JustanotherTuesday · 11/03/2021 16:28

In my old home town, an elderly man won £150,000. When he went to check with the newsagents if he had won anything, they told him he hadn't. They claimed the money for themselves, however Camelot became suspicious and called the police.
The couple ended up getting fourteen months each in prison.
It was about nine years ago, they still run the newsagents but the lottery terminal was removed.

GabsAlot · 11/03/2021 16:28

equuscaballus · 11/03/2021 16:29

A school friends mother won the jackpot in the late 90s

My brothers acquaintance's won a very large amount in late 90s

In the early 2000s my sisters friend won 20k in a scratchcard inside her 18th birthday card.

It does happen and i'm hoping its my turn next!

Totallyfedup1979 · 11/03/2021 16:36

This thread has just made me waste £20 on online instant win cards Angry

I didn’t win.

TrialOfStyle · 11/03/2021 16:38

I know of someone who won the jackpot. It was an old school friend's dad. Sadly I am not friends with him anymore because I would have loved to be invited to a house party Grin.

TrialOfStyle · 11/03/2021 16:39

Oh, and thinking about it a much closer friend when we were at school - her parents won £100k on a scratchcard.

I'm regretting leaving my hometown now I think about it.

toomuchlikemyusername · 11/03/2021 16:41

I used to work for an investment company and lottery winners would be referred by Camelot for tax and investment advice. Plenty of £1 million plus winners back in the early days of the lottery and it was interesting to see how it changed their lives (or not). Most people were generally overwhelmed and after a few indulgences, tended to carry on pretty much as normal. Helping family members buy a house or clear a mortgage was top of most winners' lists.

XenoBitch · 11/03/2021 16:45

Yeah, a shop assistant who works in a shop local to my parents won £250k on the lottery years ago. I also worked with someone who won a similar amount too. He also won a nice amount from Premium Bonds. Very lucky man!

GlamourSpider · 11/03/2021 16:46

DP worked remotely with a colleague in another office who won around £60m on the euromillions.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 11/03/2021 16:48

Yes, a friend’s parents won about £5 million. If I remember correctly, it was the first time they’d ever changed the numbers they used.

Aquagirl19 · 11/03/2021 16:59

A friend of the family won about £7 million on the lottery 15 years or so ago.
