Has won a decent amount on the lottery?

By decent amount I'm meaning anything £10k and up

Only wondering as I had a zoom catch up with a friend last night and as we were chatting away I said something along the lines of "If I won the lottery I'd..."
It got us onto the subject of her thinking the whole thing is a conspiracy and nobody actually ever wins. Her theory is that she doesn't know anyone that's ever won more than £50/£60 and she doesn't know anyone who knows anyone who has either (think she was on a six degrees of separation tangent kind of thing) and neither do I so therefore it can't be real HmmI should point out that we had drunk a considerable amount of wine by this point Grin

So, I thought I'd put it to the wonderful wisdom of mumsnet!
Does anyone know anyone who's won big? Or know anyone who knows anyone?

Yes two that I can think of just now. One was at the very beginning of the lottery and the family who won big (don't know the sum but think it was around 3 millions), lived in my neighbourhood. They already owned their house which was rather swish but the cars outside were upgraded and people would slow down as they walked by to have an ogle. No idea what happened to them or their money after that as I moved away to another area.
The second one was a single woman who won just under 6million and she went a bit wild with her spending then married a man I knew through work. I think she still has some of her winnings left from the gossip I get to hear.
Not jealous at all (did I really just say that?) Smile

St0neChat · 11/03/2021 18:22

Yes a group won 11k each

lanbro · 11/03/2021 18:24

I know a woman who won a couple of million, old family friend, definitely won!

INeedToGetOutOfMyHouse · 11/03/2021 18:29

A friend of my parents won £350,000 on the postcode lottery and one of my students won a share of the top prize on the national lottery (enough to buy 4 local houses and start letting them out for income).

Pumpkinpied · 11/03/2021 18:32

My friend won a million pounds on a Christmas raffle draw thing on the lottery around four years ago.
I was so thrilled when she told me. Life hasn’t always been easy for her, including working two jobs as a single parent with no support from her deadbeat ex husband. Looking at her you wouldn’t guess, although now she only works one job and owns a couple of investment properties.

Pumpkinpied · 11/03/2021 18:35

Also MIL won several thousand pounds on the postcode lottery. She had to go to a presentation with the big cheques, although I know it was a long time afterwards when she received it.

BonnieDundee · 11/03/2021 18:37

I personally know someone who won £100k. I also know of (but dont.actually know them) 2 other people who have won sums in the low millions.

CorvusPurpureus · 11/03/2021 19:30

A mate of mine won a thumping great amount.

He kept it very quiet. I only know as he told me when we were both quite pissed one night, & obviously because I was just a friend (I originally met him because I used to work with his then gf, then they split up & she moved on, long previous to the win, but he & I subsequently became good pals because we ended up working together on projects occasionally - small professional world).

So obviously he wasn't expecting me to have my hand out for his ££££s, & drunkenly told me that this was the source of his wealth because he'd been buying property & wanted my advice about a town he knew I'd previously lived in.

He came from a large & tricky family & hadn't told them because he knew perfectly well that he'd be deluged by half siblings & cousins wanting him to invest in their dubious business operations.

We are still in occasional contact via SM. He's still living very quietly, still working in the day job, married with young dc now. Has a very nice property portfolio - I know a couple of other people who rent rather posh apartments from him!

TokenGinger · 11/03/2021 20:57

My friend's mum won £250k on the postcode lottery. Their next door neighbours (husband and wife) both played, and therefore won 2 x £250k!

I am still waiting for my big win 🙄

wellthatsunusual · 11/03/2021 21:00

Yes, a group of acquaintances won a decent amount. I think it was half a million or thereabouts, but there were quite a few people to share it between, so not life changing amounts for each individual but a nice sum anyway.

MsAwesomeDragon · 11/03/2021 21:02

My friend's parents won £500,000 when we were at school. It was a really good win for them, but it hasn't allowed them to give up work or anything. They moved to a slightly better house, still fairly normal though, 3 bed semi rather than 2 bed terrace. Had a fantastic once in a lifetime holiday for the family (4 of them plus both sets of grandparents), then the rest was put away to help their kids through uni/house deposits. She's still a hairdresser, he's still a baker. They just have a bit less financial pressure because the mortgage is paid off.

Cailleach · 11/03/2021 21:04

One of my ex-colleagues won £70k about fifteen years ago.....then about £10k five years later.

A neighbour of mine won £100k on a scratchcard from the shop at the end of our street. He was an alcoholic and drank himself to death within three years :(

PeterPomegranate · 11/03/2021 21:08

Yes a friend of my husband’s sister. A few million I think. It’s supposed to be a secret but if I know I think we can assume not a very successful one. They have a nice house in an expensive part of the country and a generally better lifestyle than you’d expect from their jobs. I’m not sure if she actually works any more but in theory is freelance in her profession.

VaizyCrazyDaizy · 11/03/2021 21:11

I knew someone who won £3 million. Totally went mental spending it all and lost it all and had a very unhappy life. Lots of deaths in family.

Whammyyammy · 11/03/2021 21:15

Husbands work colleague won £100k on a £1 scratchcard 4 yrs ago

PurBal · 11/03/2021 21:22

I know of someone who won 8 million in the village. They were in their 80s so did some work on their 70s semi. Distributed some to family. And they gave 500k to the church too.

HollowTalk · 11/03/2021 21:24

@BigSandyBalls2015

A neighbour won £100 million a couple of years ago.
Wow! What did they do with the money?
nanbread · 11/03/2021 21:24

I suspect I know someone who has won. They both stopped working, bought a bigger house and renovated it, and went on lots of incredible holidays...

sweetnessnfight · 11/03/2021 21:28

I know someone who won £50k on the scratch cards when they first started. And also a guy who won about half a million. He paid his mortgage off and his mam n dads mortgage, and went to the pub lots.

Tartyflette · 11/03/2021 21:42

The brother of a woman i know quite well won about 40 million on the Euromillions lottery, a few years ago now. (Early noughties, i think)
He was a careful bloke by all accounts, his sister doesn't seem to have got much out of it.

Toottootdrivers · 11/03/2021 21:43

My teachers won in a syndicate when I was at school. I think they won about £20k each.

Crystalcrazy · 11/03/2021 22:07

Yes, someone I went to school with and also a colleagues dad, both won millions on the National Lottery. The colleague was disappointed in their dad as they expected a large handout which didn’t happen.

8misskitty8 · 11/03/2021 22:10

Neighbour 2 doors down won the euromillions, in-laws neighbour won the thunderball, I worked in the same place as someone who won several millions on the main lottery and another staff members niece won a million.
So I figure i’ve Got no chance of winning now !

SingingSands · 11/03/2021 22:55

My dad was part of a syndicate win at work. He never disclosed how much he won but my parents bought a new car, a new house (new build) paid for my wedding, gave my brother a deposit for a flat and had treated their best friends to a holiday. I know my dad is very careful with money and a very good investor so whatever he's saved/invested will be a good chunk of what he won. He carried on working until he was in his 70s too (but he's one of those people who loved his weird job!).

I never knew a thing about it until planning our wedding and my dad insisted on paying. We were surprised and pushed back as we'd been living together for 5 years at this point and were not expecting any financial input from parents. We were just told "your dad had a syndicate win but don't ask how much because we're not telling you"! We've never brought it up again!

MintyCedric · 11/03/2021 22:57

I know someone who won the jackpot very early on, and some friends who got 5 + bonus ball about 20 years ago and were able to clear their mortgage.

I'm still patiently waiting...
