DP went and got all the ingredients for tonight's dinner which he is going to cook. We don't live together but are in a bubble so eat together a lot.

We are on a strict cut cycle before the gyms reopen so counting calories and macros. I obviously get a lot less calories than he does though. He tries to eat 2500 and I get 1400.

He is making chilli and he has bought pork and beef mince rather than lean mince beef. I wasn't going to say anything but when logging the calories this morning (I plan my day out in advance) I figured out that it is significantly more calorific. I mean if we had lean mince I could have chilli rice and a mini naan for less calories than just the chilli made with the other mince.

I couldn't help myself but mention it and BF has agreed to go any get more mince but I feel like an absolute brat! Usually I would just be great full that someone has bought and cooked a meal for me and eat what I am given but I am really trying to focus right now.

So YABU - it's only one meal you should have kept quiet.

YANBU - he knows you are on a strict calorie allowance and should get the lean mince.

Cripes. I think I'll stick to being fat, this is a problem I could not be bothered with.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 03/03/2021 13:14

he is the one who guides me on nutrition and training so he gets it. He just didn't realise the difference in nutritional value he just picked up the first mince and didn't check.

If he’s guiding you on nutrition he needs to start reading labels!

This sounds ridiculous to me but as serious athletes you two are on is our aligned so while we may all think you’re mad, clearly he doesn’t so I think that case YANBU even though you clearly are!

Theonlyoneiknow · 03/03/2021 13:15

YANBU. Especially as you and your partner are doing this together. I also track my macros and would hate to go over on mince instead of a side :) I usually sub lentils for mince (am not a vegetarian though). My calorie allowance is also paltry, I can sympathise!

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 03/03/2021 13:21

you two are on is our aligned sorry phone mangled that one!

EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 13:22

Well some think I'm nuts, some get it but this thread has shown me that there is someone out there for everyone and I am so lucky to have found someone on my wavelength.

He's at home baking lemon meringue protein cups as we speak, I guarantee I will find room in my macros for those tomorrow Grin

Op stop justifying yourself. You are new to this you panicked because you want to be dedicated to your goals and well done your doing well but in time you will relax and understand you can tweak the rest of the week to sort it or you just go over and and realise it didn't make any difference. Those who lead the same lifestyle understand where you are coming from. Honestly you will encounter this attitude all the time from people my friends and family think I'm some sort of health freak and depriving myself and not living life etc..

Some really good supporting lifting communities on FB etc you would be better having this discussion with.

As long as you’re both ok with what sounds like (to me) a crazy obsession with calories then what does it matter what anyone else thinks.

PickAChew · 03/03/2021 13:29

Yabu. Both for wanting different mince and naan with a chilli.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/03/2021 13:31

@ShirleyPhallus

I just go off what my Fitbit says which isn't an exact science of course but it's my best guess. That's why it's important to be strict on calories in because that's easier to be accurate with.

Fitbit vastly overestimates the amount of calories burnt while walking. It is just not possible to be burning the same number of calories on a pretty sedentary activity like walking as a HIIT workout. Well I suppose unless you’re doing 20 seconds work and 40 seconds of rest or something

Shirley you've got it all wrong!

It's generally the opposite. FitBit is usually fairly correct on walking - you'll burn calories based on your weight, as well as distance walked. Intensity matters less.

FitBit often underestimates HIIT sessions in terms of calories burnt. However, individuals over-estimate how many calories they burn when doing HIIT sessions. You need to be really working at high intensity, with provided breaks, throughout the whole session.

The figures OP provides looks about right to me.

Thanks Smile I would feel like a fraud if I were to join a lifting community, I'm so new at it all. I know that's probably silly though.

You are absolutely right though about me finding my feet. My BF is much more relaxed about it than I am cos he knows it evens out. Should have seen how much persuading it took for me to eat a surplus on purpose at first 🙈 I miss it now though!

I couldn’t think of anything worse

This. Well of course I could think of worse things, but in the grand scheme of things.. y'know...

Catcrazylifter · 03/03/2021 13:36

Your not a fraud we all have to start somewhere and I'm still learning to this day and you should have seen my first attempts at powerlifting but it can be lonely the fitness world we both have partners with same goals but it's nice to talk with other people you should defo get involved with the communities on FB and INsta they can be really supportive and will give you good advice and direction again all the best

Chloemol · 03/03/2021 13:39

Wow boring couple counting calories etc

I am all for eating healthily, undertaking exercise etc

But when it becomes the be all and end all, that he has to go out to get extra mince it’s to far

Life is for enjoying

FedNlanders · 03/03/2021 13:40

I would have just had smaller portion.

babbaloushka · 03/03/2021 13:41

1400 calories is the recommended intake for a toddler. One meal wouldn't hurt, your poor DP.

EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 13:41

@DownstairsMixUp

Yabu and 1400 is too little even for a tiny petite teenager. You need to up that a bit.
It's not too little, I eat approx 1400 and burn off approx 2000 including exercise calories. Which give me a deficit of approx 600 per day which is roughly one pound weight loss a week.
OP posts:
LIZS · 03/03/2021 13:44

An ott reaction and agree smaller portion or use more veg etc and save some for another day. If this were the guy insisting on op fetching more he'd be called controlling.

We are probably boring to some but we have a shared hobby and a goal we are both working towards so we aren't boring to each other.

I suppose if it were just one of us into fitness that would be tedious to the other but exercise is something we both enjoy.

YABU - naan bread with chilli?

GameSetMatch · 03/03/2021 13:52

Sorry YABU it’s one meal...

Naan bread goes with everything. It's my favourite side.

You can have disordered eating habits and be a healthy weight at the same time.

I think you're hugely overreacting and it sounds very unhealthy to be so worried about eating a specific type of mince.

zingally · 03/03/2021 14:04

I'd say that the mince isn't your problem... Your disordered attitude to food is the problem.

If you are concerned enough to make a post on MN about "the wrong mince", I'd be taking a long, hard look at yourself. And if your BF is actively encouraging this, I'd be looking at him as well.

CustardCreamm · 03/03/2021 14:05

This is a joke right?
