Aibu to send him for more mince?

DP went and got all the ingredients for tonight's dinner which he is going to cook. We don't live together but are in a bubble so eat together a lot.

We are on a strict cut cycle before the gyms reopen so counting calories and macros. I obviously get a lot less calories than he does though. He tries to eat 2500 and I get 1400.

He is making chilli and he has bought pork and beef mince rather than lean mince beef. I wasn't going to say anything but when logging the calories this morning (I plan my day out in advance) I figured out that it is significantly more calorific. I mean if we had lean mince I could have chilli rice and a mini naan for less calories than just the chilli made with the other mince.

I couldn't help myself but mention it and BF has agreed to go any get more mince but I feel like an absolute brat! Usually I would just be great full that someone has bought and cooked a meal for me and eat what I am given but I am really trying to focus right now.

So YABU - it's only one meal you should have kept quiet.

YANBU - he knows you are on a strict calorie allowance and should get the lean mince.

YANBU

JeffTheOracle · 03/03/2021 10:52

@sparklfairy wouldnt you just drain the mince after you've browned it? Appreciate its still more calorific than lean beef mince but it's also tastier Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2021 10:53

@GreenSlide

YABU. Will you be able to stick to this very strict way of eating long term?
They're not planning to.
EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 10:54

I don't always eat like this, we are pretty healthy usually and have macro goals but we are on a strict 6 week cut to reduce body fat as much as poss before the gym reopens.

That gives us more leeway to bulk without worrying about gaining too much extra fat. We can relax a lot if we have a good starting base.

Haha, I wish I had these problems! Made me laugh out loud.
Glad you two are so aligned on your eating plans. 😂

Or.....rinse it.Grin

BarbaraofSeville · 03/03/2021 10:54

Unless you are professional athletes in training for the Olympics, YABVU. It's one meal. Either have the chilli on it's own or just have a minimally more calorific meal. As a one off, it really won't make a difference.

But if he's such an expert on nutrition and training, how come he didn't get the right mince in the first place? That's quite a significant error when it's that important to you.

That amount of interest and control in your diet doesn't sound like something to be lucky about, it sounds rather creepy TBH.

pandora206 · 03/03/2021 10:55

I'd just drain the mince and up the veg.

Sunshineandflipflops · 03/03/2021 10:55

I'm also watching calories and it would throw me too but I would let it slide for one meal. My bf cooked for me last night and made something I wouldn't usually cook due to the calories but I ate it and said thanks.

If your bf is following the same plan as you though, I'm sure he won't mind you asking for different mince.

Ah right. Well whatever makes you happy? Your DP sounds nice Smile
Sunshineandflipflops · 03/03/2021 10:55

(My bf is one of those eat anything in sight and stay skinny people. Bastard).

EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 10:55

@Maxellious

My first instinct is that you don't have a very healthy attitude to food, if this is how you always are. It's not just the calorie counting, it's the fact that you aren't willing to forgo the extras to the meal on the occasion that the "wrong" mince was bought. Rice ok, but surely you could just leave off the naan?

However, if this is part of a short term "reeducation" about what you are eating fine, but don't do it for longer than a month. Then use what you have learnt about portion sizes, but stop obsessing.

Naan is the best bit ShockConfused I would rather give up the rice but then I would get a lecture about not eating enough carbs.

Funny how when someone uses the term “weight loss” everyone has an opinion on how you’re doing it wrong, “you have to be consistent”, “a few extra calories here and there add up”, “calories in must be less than calories out”, “1400 is too high to lose”...yet when someone says “cut” they’re obsessed and what does it matter it’s just one meal?

Your boyfriend understands- mine would too- he’s obviously very kind and though I think it would have been ok if he didn’t go out for more and rather learnt for next time, it’s really thoughtful that he did go.

PurpleDaisies · 03/03/2021 10:56

Why?

gannett · 03/03/2021 10:57

Can't relate to any of the calorie-counting but YANBU. It doesn't sound like you stamped your foot and demanded he go back out, you mentioned it and he offered. Sounds like he's on the same page as you when it comes to tracking these things so he probably understood where you were coming from.

user1592512579 · 03/03/2021 10:58

In your circumstances in would have done the same thing. Your partner obviously understands and is following a similar regime.

If it was just me following a strict diet I would have kept quiet and ate the meal.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 03/03/2021 10:58

YANBU. I have a glacial slow metabolism and really struggle to shift weight on anything more than 1200 cals. Sad (Yes I know this is very low but tell that to my scales and multiple chronic illnesses) It's really shit and I'd be really upset at this as it would mean that I wouldn't be able to eat much else that day. It's not like I can easily cut back on calories in other days, taking a week long view, when the budget is only 1200 to begin with.

My husband is one of those lanky sods who can eat donuts all day and keep his 30" waist. It's really hard eating with someone who could easily call your dinner a snack, so he is supportive of that and eats his crap in the office where I can't see him. I'd be very upset if he thoughtlessly bought a high calorie ingredient. I'm trying so hard and it's soul destroying enough without him making it harder.

Because when the gym opens we want to bulk so add muscle, having low body fat means we don't have to worry too much about gaining a bit back which is pretty inevitable because you have to eat in a calorie surplus to build muscle.

I really feel for you, 1200 calories is hardly anything and so miserable to stick to.

I am struggling at 1400!

One meal wouldn't bother me, I do log all my food to hit my calories of 2200 a day but I'm at home on a bulk as I'm still training. It is so frustrating though when calories go over, I'm more worried about my fat macros going over than my calories, that's when I'm like oops!
I wouldn't have asked him to but from the sounds of it, you didn't ask. You mentioned it and he offered? He sounds really supportive and I think that's fantastic.
Now I'm wondering if I should do a quick mini cut before bulking when the gyms open but I really enjoy my extra calories 😂

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2021 11:02

Walk in the morning 40 mins 250ish cals
Weights in the after noon 1 hour 250ish cals
HIIT class in the evening 30 mins 200 cals

You’re calculating this wrong if you think that walking burns about the same as HIIT

Windyone · 03/03/2021 11:05

YANBU I understand!

Would really like to see what your daily menus are like. I’m trying to do the same but I’m inexperienced 😀

I can't wait to get back on 2200 calories! Sooner the gym opens the better. I had just started my first bulk cycle when the gyms shut so whilst I was seeing progress in my lifts it wasn't long enough to get serious gains. We are training at home but don't have much of a set up so just maintains the muscle we have really. I am jealous of you still bulking!

My BF is amazing he is a body builder and is guiding me every step of the way. He makes me protein pancakes for breakfast every day and protein cookies 🍪.

I am dreading him going back to work to be honest.

YABU it's not really an essential trip to go out and buy mince when you have some. Just eat less of it.

FOJN · 03/03/2021 11:10

I'm not sure if people understand the cut/bulk cycle of bodybuilding. It would be far too disciplined for me but it's interesting you haven't considered quorn mince, comparable to lean mince in terms of protein but with far less fat and calories, although it does have some carbs.

I'd be bothered that your partner is giving you nutritional and training advice but not paying attention to what he's buying.
