DP went and got all the ingredients for tonight's dinner which he is going to cook. We don't live together but are in a bubble so eat together a lot.

We are on a strict cut cycle before the gyms reopen so counting calories and macros. I obviously get a lot less calories than he does though. He tries to eat 2500 and I get 1400.

He is making chilli and he has bought pork and beef mince rather than lean mince beef. I wasn't going to say anything but when logging the calories this morning (I plan my day out in advance) I figured out that it is significantly more calorific. I mean if we had lean mince I could have chilli rice and a mini naan for less calories than just the chilli made with the other mince.

I couldn't help myself but mention it and BF has agreed to go any get more mince but I feel like an absolute brat! Usually I would just be great full that someone has bought and cooked a meal for me and eat what I am given but I am really trying to focus right now.

So YABU - it's only one meal you should have kept quiet.

YANBU - he knows you are on a strict calorie allowance and should get the lean mince.

@ShirleyPhallus

Walk in the morning 40 mins 250ish cals Weights in the after noon 1 hour 250ish cals HIIT class in the evening 30 mins 200 cals

You’re calculating this wrong if you think that walking burns about the same as HIIT

I just go off what my Fitbit says which isn't an exact science of course but it's my best guess. That's why it's important to be strict on calories in because that's easier to be accurate with.

Ok so you are both body builders? Is this a hobby or a job?

Whose suggestion was you getting into body building, yours or his?

EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 11:13

@FOJN

I'm not sure if people understand the cut/bulk cycle of bodybuilding. It would be far too disciplined for me but it's interesting you haven't considered quorn mince, comparable to lean mince in terms of protein but with far less fat and calories, although it does have some carbs.

I'd be bothered that your partner is giving you nutritional and training advice but not paying attention to what he's buying.

I've never thought of quorn mince to be honest, I enjoy beef and it's just what I have always used. Might give it a try though next time it's my turn to cook something mince based.

Off topic but I would love to see what you're eating and what workouts you're doing - I want to get some body fat off but I'm struggling because that much exercise makes me ravenous and I never feel full. Unless your secret is just iron willpower!

He is a body builder, as a hobby.

I was a HIIT queen but wanted to get into lifting as I personally prefer the body shape of women who lift. He trains me but at my request. We already went to the same gym.

How many calories for a 30 minute shagfest?
asking for a friend Smile

Sparklfairy · 03/03/2021 11:18
@sparklfairy wouldnt you just drain the mince after you've browned it? Appreciate its still more calorific than lean beef mince but it's also tastier Grin
I may have been caught out before, being used to lean mince, and mindlessly added tinned tomatoes etc before I realised Grin I'm not the most focused cook so it's just safer to use lean!!

MuddleMoo · 03/03/2021 11:18

Has he had his Covid vaccination?

Most days I eat:

Protein pancake with skyr yogurt and berries.

Chicken salad wrap or chicken rice and green veg

Protein cookie

Then dinner varies we eat steak or fish or lean mince with some kind of carb and lots of veg.

Drink tons of water!

We walk first thing in the morning then do a push/pull/legs weight cycle and a 30 min zoom class of an evening.

I get you I'm a powerlifter and count my macros I can only eat the 5% mince as well or my macros would be destroyed your not obsessive, my husband is bodybuilding and bulking at the moment eating 3000 odd calories to my 1700 it's gutting 🤣 my coach also has a degree in nutrition though so my training is taking into account what I can eat and what I'm burning off but my goals aren't about weightloss or body building I eat to lift heavier

EatTheMince · 03/03/2021 11:20

Has he had his Covid vaccination?
Of course he has. I wouldn't dream of sending him to a shop unnecessarily otherwise! I need him fit and well to cater to my every daddy food whom!

Ah that's not so bad then - I take back my YABU and say if he doesn't mind and isn't likely to catch covid then that's fine.

Maybe one day I can get those heavy lifts! I was seeing so much progress in my dead's before lock down but still not into 3 figures.

Just cook the mince and drain off the extra fat?

ShirleyPhallus · 03/03/2021 11:23

I just go off what my Fitbit says which isn't an exact science of course but it's my best guess. That's why it's important to be strict on calories in because that's easier to be accurate with.

Fitbit vastly overestimates the amount of calories burnt while walking. It is just not possible to be burning the same number of calories on a pretty sedentary activity like walking as a HIIT workout. Well I suppose unless you’re doing 20 seconds work and 40 seconds of rest or something

lubeybooby · 03/03/2021 11:24

YABU, just get him to tip the extra fat off once it's rendered out from cooking, it's only the extra fat content that makes it more calorific and if you get rid of the majority of it you'll be left with the sameish content and calorie count as the lean stuff.

Catcrazylifter · 03/03/2021 11:24

You will get there just keep at it if you want those heavy lifts don't fall into the trap believing carbs are the enemy they are vital for that energy you need to lift heavy in compounds. Good luck in your training, hopefullynot much longer till you can get back to the gym!

I totally agree with you, which is why I am so strict on Calories in because I know calories out won't be as much as my Fitbit is telling me.

That's what he always tells me, forever shoving bagels at me when we are lifting properly.

I have learnt a lot from him because before him I was very much a carb avoider! I feel so much better for eating a more balanced diet.

I don't think you are being unreasonable.

ErrolTheDragon · 03/03/2021 11:30

It is just not possible to be burning the same number of calories on a pretty sedentary activity like walking as a HIIT workout.

It does, of course, depend on the speed and incline. This gives a reasonable reality check:

cannotfathom · 03/03/2021 11:31

Bloody hell 🤦‍♀️

Beautiful3 · 03/03/2021 11:35

Honestly, I think I wouldnt have said anything until after we had eaten. I would have said that it was delicious but really calorific! So next time could he please use lean mince instead? But its just one meal.

lazylinguist · 03/03/2021 11:37

I think you might have got different answers if you'd made it clear in your OP that you had such specific diet aims because of weight lifting and that you were being trained by your body builder partner. I mean... it still sounds a bit OTT to me, and I can't imagine why you'd be that bothered by one meal, but the context would have been helpful.
