To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

Socks are good actually. They are longer than gloves so you stand a better chance of them staying on. If you can afford £15 and you just want them then why not but for the practical issue of keeping something on her hands the socks win for me.

Keepitnerdy · 22/02/2021 09:28

Used to pop on a onsie with scratch mittens then pop a pair of socks on top . I've got some funny pics of him with rainbow odd socks on his hands it's also a good way to reuse socks that are too small

Trainerdilemma · 22/02/2021 09:35

Primark used to do little mitten type ones for a few pounds, fine for one winter.

tracker222 · 22/02/2021 09:36

I'm with your husband! £15 for a pair of gloves is crazy

funnyday · 22/02/2021 09:36

YABU. Socks are much better for baby's gloves, because they are longer and can pull up over cuffs, so are harder to remove, and you can put two pairs on if it's really cold & have spares if they get wet from chewing.

TwelvePaws · 22/02/2021 09:48

It depends on your financial situation. If you’re struggling for money then I can see his point. If you’re not, then I’d buy my baby whatever I wanted.

AgentProvocateur · 22/02/2021 09:52

@RedskyBynight I’m not saying the man is automatically in the wrong. I just can’t actually imagine a scenario where, if I thought my baby needed something to make her more comfortable, I wouldn’t just go out and buy it/order it in.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 22/02/2021 09:57

Op do you have issues with spending too much money? Your previous posts reference buying 75 board books, £350 on 2 playmats and wanting to spend over a hundred on a wooden climbing thing.
Just wondering if there's an issue with you overspending.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/02/2021 09:58

@Peridotty do you mean you disagree on spending that money on that item in general and would normally agree on what to buy or that he won't permit you the money?

I agree £15 is silly money for baby gloves, for the time they spend on you might as well get a couple of pairs from Poundland but I wouldn't have waited for permission to buy something I thought my baby really needed

MessagesKeepGettingClearer · 22/02/2021 10:00

Why don't YOU buy them?

That's the real issue. Why do you have to ask permission and why don't you have access to any money?

oakleaffy · 22/02/2021 10:00

Gloves on a baby are designed to fall off and get lost.

No self respecting baby will keep gloves on for more than 5 seconds...A flap of the arm and wheeee! the offending garment flies off in a graceful parabola to end up under the buggy wheels.

With this backstory, OP's DH might indeed be thinking ''Just no! this os absurd''

Are the board books antiquarian?...Buy paper books for babies...they learn dexterity turning paper pages, and are cheap enough it doesn't matter if they get creased.

crapbuttrue · 22/02/2021 10:06

Ha! I used the sock method. Yes, don't waste your money.

Nonamesavail · 22/02/2021 10:09

He may be right but why is it up to him? Just get them!

womaninatightspot · 22/02/2021 10:11

Socks are actually a good idea. I used to pop a pair on under a sleep suit . Longish ones so they went up to the elbow and they'd stay in place. Ds used to try and pull them off but I think he managed it once.

With that backstory it's not hard to see why the OP DH is frustrated at the amount of money being wasted! This isn't about a pair of gloves at all. It seems the gloves are just the tipping point for him being fed up of such reckless spending.
WhoStoleMyCheese · 22/02/2021 10:13

I love all the posters telling OP to just get stuff - she may have a history of overspending or money may be tight meaning that she checks with DH first. Stop assuming that women are angels

Kokosrieksts · 22/02/2021 10:14

I like spending money on my kid, but 15£ on baby gloves is a waste. They don’t stay on. Better get a warm fleece jumper to keep their body warm.

75 board books?? Surely after the first 5 the baby gets the general idea - colourful pages they chew to death once teeth start coming in?
Felifox · 22/02/2021 10:15

I can see his point. My dm was very tired with my dsis teething so my df took her out for a walk. She lost her gloves and my df had bought her a leather and fur pair. My dm was furious as they were short of money. But the draper had taken a length of elastic and threaded it through the sleeves of her snowsuit attaching a glove to each end so as she flung them off they stayed hanging from her sleeves. They were 7s6p (37.5p) in 1951 and she still has them.

unmarkedbythat · 22/02/2021 10:29

£15 for baby gloves? If I were your DH I'd just buy some much, much cheaper ones for the baby and roll my eyes at you wanting to pay that for baby gloves.

wasgoingmadinthecountry · 22/02/2021 10:36

When it was very cold (we were abroad) I used to put tights on under dd3's coat so she couldn't pull them off. PoP sells these www.polarnopyret.co.uk/products/mitt-clips-black-60018813-198

SheCannaeTakeNoMoreCapt · 22/02/2021 10:41

In some parts of the uk it can be sub zero for a long period and if the baby is in a carrier their hands and feet can get very cold

At the end of February? Please do share where!

ladycarlotta · 22/02/2021 10:41

I think it's more important to keep the baby's core temperature up than try to keep gloves on her. Definitely echoing those who say go for a cosy pram suit, and several good layers underneath.

In an ideal world I'd suggest you invest in a couple of wool vests but I know that's an added expense. I buy a couple in the sale each year, plus been lucky to get a few hand-me-downs, and they are the best thing for regulating my child's temperature. But it would cost you more than the gloves to buy more than one!

ChancesWhatChances · 22/02/2021 10:42

Scratch mits will keep its hands warm just as well as gloves
