To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

Buy some second hand. Why is it up to him? I don’t consult my husband on small purchases for our baby.
Expensive purchases yes, but if she needs gloves, socks, coat etc I buy it.

ExcusesAndAccusations · 22/02/2021 20:12

On the subject of the OP’s location I did wonder why she’d already been out for a walk at half past five in the morning. I thought “no wonder it was a bit parky”.

LolaSmiles · 22/02/2021 20:14

£15 sounds a lot for baby gloves and will fall off.
I'd get a snowsuit or fleece one with integrated mittens or mittens that are attached to the suit by poppers.

Haveyouallgonequitemad · 22/02/2021 20:45

How much are gloves about a pound? Just buy them tell him they are socks tight arse just ignore him if you want to buy gloves buy gloves yes socks would do but I know No One that does this it's not world war 2 you know

Haveyouallgonequitemad · 22/02/2021 20:46

£15 is fine and only a bottle or 3 of wine if he moans

Calmdown14 · 22/02/2021 20:47

I had an excellent fleecy oversuit with fold over hands and feet. Lasted ages and could go under a coat or be used in car seat. It was less than £15 and massively more useful. Full snow suits can be a bit bulky in a carrier when they have your warmth too. Bit like this www.amazon.co.uk/Snonook-Fleece-Bunting-Attached-Fold-Over/dp/B07YN2XNX9?psc=1&th=1&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

@micc

Sorry but I agree with your husband! I put socks on my babies hands!!
And you live in New England too?
ZZTopGuitarSolo · 22/02/2021 21:12

I have to admit, I recently bought some ski mittens that have a wrist strap included, and I love them - I often just let them dangle. They call it a 'chase leash' when it's for adults.

I live near Chicago. If your weather in Boston is anything like ours and you are taking your baby out in it for a walk with their hands uncovered then yes you need gloves. Thick socks would probably work though as they don’t need to be waterproof if they aren’t putting their hands in snow.

Toddlers in the snow absolutely need waterproof winter gloves, and boots and snow pants etc. If you buy a pair of baby/toddler snow mittens this year they will most likely still fit for next winter. We get the majority of our stuff from target

Babyiskickingmyribs · 22/02/2021 21:26

What’s everyone’s problem with books? My one year old probably has over a hundred now. I bought him a lot off Amazon plus my family have sent lots of used books. I live in a non-English speaking country so I see them as an investment in his future English skills. He loves books. I started reading to him basically as soon as we were home from the hospital. To start with it was a way of remembering to speak English to him frequently, then in a few months he started to really enjoy them. Libraries are great when there isn’t a pandemic on and when they have the books you want in the language you want for your child. OP please keep reading to your child and don’t feel guilty about investing in books. Don’t get into financial trouble doing it obviously but it’s not ridiculous to have a large and varied board book collection.

iguanadonna · 22/02/2021 21:30

Socks are actually a better idea.

But your DH sounds annoying.

MRex · 22/02/2021 21:39

The issue isn't books, it's getting so many board books. The board books serve a purpose for chewing and learning to turn board pages a couple of months before paper, but toddlers enjoy proper stories so you'll find you need proper books as well as the naturally much shorter board books.

Babyboomtastic · 22/02/2021 22:50

If you are British, how did you think they the weather would be like it is in Boston when it's nearly March?

Decent gloves yes (though I do use socks if I can't find any and they are fine) but not £15 ones as they are pretty much single use for the first couple of years.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/02/2021 22:54

What MREX said. Board books are great, but they designed to be manhandled so babies learn books are food, turn the page, ooh new picture etc. Yes some like the Gruffalo are good for slightly older so they can "read" alone and not rip them etc. But in reality the good "read to them" books are not board books

@NoProblem123

Puts some tights on baby’s arms with the crotch round the back. They’re going nowhere.
This is inspired!
DinosaurDigestive · 23/02/2021 09:51

Looking at that picture a definite yes to big thick cosy ones!! Definitely not thin gloves in that!! The little hat is cute Smile

So much snow! I would try to keep favourites away just now from little one. Card books are handy for them exploring so the pages don't get crumpled etc but they seem to be more enticing when it comes to chewing/sucking the corners! I have always tried not to let mine do that to books but I'm pretty relaxed about other chewing! You could buy a special edition copy of a book, Winnie the Pooh for example, and keep it somewhere safe until older. I've done that with mine also with Beatrix Potter collection

UnbeatenMum · 23/02/2021 10:59

Yes, definitely get some proper mittens if it's still snowy there and close to zero. If you can get some that will fit next year then even better.

Greenmarmalade · 24/02/2021 13:19

Definitely get the proper gloves in that weather!

And don’t feel bad about book chewing- totally normal. You’ll be into paper books in a couple of years so it won’t matter.

DustyMaiden · 24/02/2021 13:24

I would buy gloves probably several pairs in different colours but not for £15.

Peridotty · 24/02/2021 20:29

Hello again,
So it got really warm in the last couple of days lol. The snow mostly melted and today we didn’t even have to wear coats!!
So my husband was kind of right, by the time the gloves arrived it would’ve been too late!!!
@Babyiskickingmyribs LOL I finally found someone with more books than me Grin
I read somewhere that there was a trend of making older kids books into board books so I’m sure a lot of the books I have are actually for older kids and not babies meaning that it’s not 80 very simple touch and feel books. So I’m not THAT crazy after all! Hahaha

RJnomore1 · 24/02/2021 21:08

You can never have too many books!

justjuggling · 24/02/2021 21:21

Seems a lot for baby mittens but it isn’t up to him what you choose to buy. If you want them, just get them.

Babyiskickingmyribs · 24/02/2021 22:16

@Peridotty Yes I know what you mean about the more advanced board books. I don’t have a hundred ´that’s not my llama’ stories or black and white picture books with no words. Often I had a choice between board or paper for the same book titie on amazon and I favoured board to start with so that they’d survive a curious baby who likes to tear up paper. Now I am starting to favour paper instead because they take up less space. But there isn’t going to be a point where I put all the board books away and bring out only paper books until my son is past the picture book stage completely. Oh, and btw, I highly recommend getting some scotch ´book tape ´ for ongoing repairs. It doesn’t go yellow like ordinary sticky tape or packing tape can. It’s what they use to reinforce library books.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 26/02/2021 16:08

I'd be surprised if winter is really over in Boston. Snow on Sat and a high of 30F on Tues. Buy the gloves :-)
