To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

I doubt she'll get frost bite unless you are In Antarctica. A pair of gloves from Tesco will cost a few quid, the old string through the coat will stop her losing them. £15 is a daft amount for a pair of gloves for a baby

shouldistop · 22/02/2021 06:39

Lol she won’t get frostbite, hahah you have to be in subzero conditions for a long period.

In some parts of the uk it can be sub zero for a long period and if the baby is in a carrier their hands and feet can get very cold.

Anyway I wouldn't buy £15 gloves for an 8 month old when it's almost March. Layer up gloves over her hands, they're harder for her to pull off.

You shouldn't have to ask your dh for permission to spend £15 though.

shouldistop · 22/02/2021 06:41

I'd also second that a coat is no use for a baby, a pram suit is better but you do need to be careful about pram suits in carriers as they can overheat against your body.

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 22/02/2021 06:48

Frostbite? Do you live in Alaska? Confused I would say gloves are 100% a waste of money now - it’s nearly March. Particularly as you can’t keep normal mittens on her.

What is more worrying here though is that you need permission to spend £15. I mean, your partner is right in that you are being daft and it’s a waste of money, but surely this isn’t something that would need to be a financial discussion?

Namechanger0800 · 22/02/2021 06:50

I bought my 15 month old some mittens On a string for a fiver off Amazon just before we had all the snow - they are fleece lined and will fit next year too as a bit big. Still hit and miss whether she keeps them on. Prior to that it was socks which weren't quite as warm.

I didn't discuss with my DH at all but 15 is more than I'd spend. Unless you are in serious financial difficulties the. Why are you asking his permission?

Shoxfordian · 22/02/2021 06:53

Why does he need to approve your purchases?

Bagamoyo1 · 22/02/2021 06:55

YANBU to want gloves, but £15 is ridiculous.

Beforethetakingoftoastandt3a · 22/02/2021 06:57

Again, read the op aNd was concerned you need permission.

When are you going back to work? Full or part time?

FuckyouBrennan · 22/02/2021 06:58

Jesus I never realised people were so tight. It’s gloves for gods sake.

shouldistop · 22/02/2021 06:58

Those laughing about frostbite.... the other week we had -7, -5 etc consistently.

Get vests with the flip over sleeves that go over hands instead. They can't pull them off and they get used as vests.

midnightstar66 · 22/02/2021 06:59

A pair that’s better designed for babies.

There's no such thing. Gloves and babies are not compatible. She won't get frost bite if her body temperature is ok plus it's been 12 c this weekend (assuming you're in the Uk) £15 for something that one of will be lost by the end of day 1 is daft just use a coat the size up so hands are covered - socks will end up lost too but would do for a cold snap should we happen to have one again. Probably not likely now.

shouldistop · 22/02/2021 07:00

@midnightstar66 12 degrees in the whole of the uk was it?

starbrightstarlight8888 · 22/02/2021 07:00

Frostbite? Where are you op?

Beforethetakingoftoastandt3a · 22/02/2021 07:03

If has not been 12 degrees where i am in uk and i have raynauds so very painful for me without three pairs of gloves. Although tbf ive only wore one this weekend, as it was warmer than the -6 of the previous week.

HandforthParishCouncilClerk · 22/02/2021 07:03

@shouldistop yes but she didn’t ask if she should have bought gloves for her baby last week. Hmm She asked if she should buy them now. Even the outer Hebrides has a daytime low of 6 or 7 now. The baby isn’t going to get frostbite!

Rubyupbeat · 22/02/2021 07:03

Mine both had socks for mittens, not because I was stingy, but they were the only damned things I could keep on them as babies. ou can tuck them in right up to their elbows.

Yes but that was a fairly rare weather event that only occurs every few years, which is why it was in the news etc and is over now. It's unlikely to happen again this year. This weekend it's been double figures pretty much everywhere. (And no I don't live in London I live on east coast of Scotland where we get the brunt of the cold weather)

lazylump72 · 22/02/2021 07:08

.This would not even be a conversation me and my dh would have. ..If you are old enough to be married and have children your days of asking for or needing permission for anything are long over....

SwimSwim · 22/02/2021 07:10

I'll go against the grain and say I'd spend the money, if they're good and you will use them. We could still have plenty more cold days ahead and if they're waterproof, they'll be worth it! Wet hands are very cold. I bought decent warm, waterproof gear for my 2 as I like to be outside all day and if warm and dry, they don't get cold or complain. For our lifestyle, £15 would be worth it, if functional.

LunaLula83 · 22/02/2021 07:11

Mine didn't need gloves as she was wrapped in a blanket in my arms and in pushchair. X

Clearly you live a very different life to most people if you think not wasting £15 on a pair of baby gloves is tight
SunshineCake · 22/02/2021 07:22

FFS what a prat.

I bought magic gloves for my kids that grew as the kid did.

I can look to see if we have any and then spend the pennies saved on DHs favourite treat and squash it in front of him. What a dick.

He does realise kids grow? My son more than once grew out of trousers after two wears.

SunshineCake · 22/02/2021 07:26

I didn't know the baby is age when I wrote that so for eight months I would have used mittens.

minniemoocher · 22/02/2021 07:27

£15? I'm with your husband. Mittens not gloves and ideally buttoned onto the snowsuit! Just go to Asda and buy the cheapest ones they have
