To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

@Peridotty

Lol. You’re right. We have a pair from h and m that are woollen and they just don’t go on! It’s impossible to pull them up so we kind of gave up with those. That’s why I want to buy another pair!! A pair that’s better designed for babies. I tried scratch mittens and she pulled one off on the way home one day. The gloves I want are £15. My husband said that’s more than what he spent on his gloves.
Snow suit with floppy over glove bits or kids but not babies gloves on over their hands.
doadeer · 22/02/2021 08:32

£15 is ridiculous you can get mittens really cheap.

Do you have to ask your husband for permission to buy anything?

diddl · 22/02/2021 08:39

Well there's a differnce between doesn't want to buy at all & doesn't want them to cost £15.

I would also probably use socks for now or pick up a cheaper pair of mittens.

Would she not have been crying if her hands were so cold that she was uncomfortable?

BrumBoo · 22/02/2021 08:41

Poundland do smaller mittens, and they're two in a pack. For £15 you could lose a pair a day and still get through winter.....

3 pack in M&S for £7

diddl · 22/02/2021 08:45

I had no idea that you could buy gloves for babies!

Do baby mittens even have a separate thumb bit?

Or did I just used to not bother with that & but their whole hand in the non thumb bit?

Nith · 22/02/2021 08:46

Where do you live where her hands got freezing outside yesterday? It's well above freezing everythwhere according to the Met office. And why is it an issue now rather than three weeks ao when it actually was cold?

Porcupineintherough · 22/02/2021 08:47

I think the compromise here would be to buy her a cheaper pair of gloves now and then buy a really good pair for next winter (although you'll still have to work on her keeping them on ).

ApolloandDaphne · 22/02/2021 08:47

I get the feeling that it is not so much your DH being stingy or in any way controlling, he just understands £15 gloves for a tot is a bit silly. Socks work well as you can pull them up quite a bit under her clothing so they are less likely to come off. She is not likely to get frostbite here though unless you live in the arctic and you failed to mention it!

Nith · 22/02/2021 08:48

@DinosaurDiana

And don’t ask in future. If it’s a basic necessity like gloves, don’t ask.
Gloves for babies aren't a basic necessity, and £15 gloves definitely aren't any sort of necessity at all.
BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 22/02/2021 08:55

When my DS was little I bought a load of pairs of identical mittens that were wool on the outside and fleece on the inside. They were really cheap so had maybe 6 or 8 pairs. He would wear a pair as we left the house and I generally had a spare mitten or two in my pocket or in the nappy change bag. We did loose a mitten every now and then but didn't end up with odd mittens because they were all the same. I had enough left over to use them again for DD.

SaltyTootsieToes · 22/02/2021 08:57

When I had my first baby, I too thought I had to have everything for them or dire things would happen.

No, frostbite isn’t going to happen. Socks are fine. £15 for an 8 month old mittens is ludicrous.

Be nicer to your DH. think about what you’re choosing to argue over.

anappleadaykeeps · 22/02/2021 08:58

Magic Gloves, as someone else mentioned higher up

UnbeatenMum · 22/02/2021 08:59

I think this depends what part of the country you're in. I'm in the south and I don't think my kids are going to get their gloves out many more times this winter. Further north, maybe. I would get some that fit next year though. My 1yo DS has a 3 pack of stretchy mittens from H&M that were £2.99 and will definitely fit him next winter.

LDParty · 22/02/2021 08:59

Buy the gloves. Babies need warm hands. And why on Earth are you checking with him every time you need to buy £15 worth of clothing for the baby? Stonz do baby mittens that stay on.

ForeverBubblegum · 22/02/2021 08:59

My dd didn't have gloves for her first winter, and hardly ever wore her own coat. If we were going out she would normally be under my coat (few sizes to big), with just her head poking out and a hat. As you said your baby likes the carrier, could you see if you have any big coats or cardigans you can use if we have any more cold days.

VettiyaIruken · 22/02/2021 08:59

Socks sound perfectly sensible.

Lochmorlich · 22/02/2021 09:00

If you can afford £15 then buy the gloves.
Your money , your choice.

AgentProvocateur · 22/02/2021 09:02

Regardless of the fact that baby gloves are inevitably crap and pointless, why do you need your husband’s permission? Do yoh have access to family money or the gloves issue the tip of a financial iceberg?

DianaT1969 · 22/02/2021 09:03

For the posters asking why you need DH approval. I get the impression from thr fact that you were keen to spend £15 on a pair (my gloves, unless leather, would cost no more than £5) that you have a shopping habit. You like nice things. Money might be tight on maternity leave and your DH is trying to curb the excess purchases. Is that right OP?

Mumdiva99 · 22/02/2021 09:05

Whatever you use buy a roll of elastic and sew them together and thread them through the coat. I also attached the hat with elastic to the back of the coat.

This was after many walks with a child on my back to get home and find a hat or glove missing....then you have to retrace your steps to find the missing item.

EveningOverRooftops · 22/02/2021 09:08

I never bought scratch mittens or gloves for mine. Always used a pair of socks. They were long enough to go past the wrist so they stayed on properly.

abigailsnan · 22/02/2021 09:13

Peridotty My children always wore all in ones with gloves attached.
If I wanted to buy anything for my children there is no way my husband would have any input I would simply buy it.
Have you thought of hiding his gloves and see how he likes to go bare handed in the freezing cold I would certainly do it. lol

RedskyBynight · 22/02/2021 09:13

Regardless of the fact that baby gloves are inevitably crap and pointless, why do you need your husband’s permission?

Maybe because money is tight with OP on maternity leave and spending £15 on a pair of gloves (more than I spent on clothes for my baby in its first year as everything was hand me downs or charity shop) is a lot?

That wasn't OP's question - I love how people always jump to the man must be in the wrong!

AlbusSeverusMalfoy · 22/02/2021 09:24

£15 for a pair of gloves. Oh my. You must have money to burn or they're magic gloves that grow with her hands.
Socks work better because you can pull them higher up the arm and they don't come off.
