To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

Why can't you buy them yourself? If you are going out for walks then mittens will be better than gloves. £15 is expensive for gloves for an 8 month old.

nancywhitehead · 22/02/2021 07:40

It's very common for parents to put socks on babies' hands. It's not stingy, there's just not really any point buying proper gloves for a baby! :)

RJnomore1 · 22/02/2021 07:40

Are there other issues with money and him ? I can’t imagine my husband ever vetoing me buying anything I decided our children had needed although he may have said find a cheaper pair if £15 was a lot of money to us at that point.

Is it more than you can sfford? Do you have to run all your spending past him?

NoProblem123 · 22/02/2021 07:48

Puts some tights on baby’s arms with the crotch round the back.
They’re going nowhere.

Roselilly36 · 22/02/2021 07:50

I have to say I agree with your husband on this one, too late in the year to buy winter gloves & way too expensive.

Greenmarmalade · 22/02/2021 07:55

I don’t think you’re being unreasonable at all. I would also buy the £15 ones! Although I did use socks for mine as they stay on well. I got a multipack of little mittens from amazon that were great. Pulling cardigan sleeves down is also good.

DinosaurDiana · 22/02/2021 07:57

Mine always had gloves on a piece of elastic. Easy to pop on when they fall asleep.

DinosaurDiana · 22/02/2021 07:58

And don’t ask in future.
If it’s a basic necessity like gloves, don’t ask.

Clearly... in my world I dress my children appropriately for the weather.

£15 !!! Oh sweetie you will soon learn. Mittens and hats come from Poundland or supermarkets or Primark. Never pay more than a couple of quid. Seriously. 90% get lost. You need one than one pair because they get chewed and soggy or dropped in the mud.
£15....ha ha ha haaaaaaaa.

Multicover · 22/02/2021 08:02

Do you have access to money OP?

Onedropbeat · 22/02/2021 08:02

We just put baby socks on ours when it’s cold

In this temperature (10degrees) no need for gloves though

Camomila · 22/02/2021 08:05

My baby also has woolen mittens from H&M so probably the same ones - have you tried putting the mittens on first and the coat? His mittens get stuck in the cuffs of the coat sleeve and then he can't pull them off.

Santatizer · 22/02/2021 08:06

£15 is way too much for baby gloves but I'm concerned with others that you can't buy them yourself if you want to?

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 22/02/2021 08:07

I'm with your husband! I would put the £15 towards a new coat with mittens in!

Socks are ideal.

letsmakethishappen · 22/02/2021 08:10

My baby had loads of mittens but hated them. Plus if you really want them why is it up to your husband to buy them?

HikeForward · 22/02/2021 08:10

You need mittens with Velcro on the wrists so she can’t pull them off in the cold. Secondhand is fine. Molo do nice ones, as do Polarn O Pyret etc. You can also get mitten clips so they can’t lose them.

I wouldn’t spend a lot though, she’ll outgrow them by next winter.

Natsku · 22/02/2021 08:13

Buy second hand mittens, long enough to tuck well up the sleeves of her coat so she can't easily pull them off, my 3 year old can't even pull them off if they're properly tucked in to a tight fitting sleeve.

Definitely don't spend 15 quid on brand new gloves (and never gloves on a baby, mittens are much easier to get on and keep their fingers warmer) but everything second hand that you can because they aren't in them long enough at that age to wear them out.

scrivette · 22/02/2021 08:15

Socks are great to use for mittens as they are harder to pull off, plus there are always space pairs of socks around instead of having to hunt for gloves/mittens.

I spent £15 on a pair of fingerless gloves for myself this year and thought it was extravagant! I buy them from £land and Primark as DC are always growing/misplacing them.

Muskox · 22/02/2021 08:18

Why is it his decision OP? Don't you get an equal say?

squashyhat · 22/02/2021 08:19

Frostbite Grin You're not taking her on an Arctic expedition

Scoobygang7 · 22/02/2021 08:20

In carrier fluffy adult bed socks 2 pairs one for legs and feet other for arms. Difficult to pull off and warm. Also once done you can wear them.

Justtakeyourtime · 22/02/2021 08:21

£15 for 20 pairs from Amazon each autumn.

Come the spring when all we have left are a few odd and holey gloves in the glove box they get binned and I buy a fresh batch each autumn. There is a lady in the sewing shop in the market who puts them on a length of ribbon for £1 a pair as well. Trying to put a pair of gloves on a baby is like trying to stuff an octopus in a string bag though- their fingers all curl up. Mittens will just get sucked and chewed on so save your ££ and use socks.

Seriously though OP, do you have access to money to buy socks or gloves?

Hadenough21 · 22/02/2021 08:25

I think people are being a bit harsh. I wouldn’t want my baby having freezing hands either and it might still be cold for another few weeks. £15 is a bit steep though if they won’t fit next winter, but I wouldn’t ask my husbands permission! I’d get something like this...
