To be annoyed my husband doesn’t want to buy gloves for our baby?

My husband is doesn’t want to buy new winter gloves for our baby. He doesn’t think that they’re worth it as she won’t get much wear out of them before winter is over. He wants her to wear a few pairs of socks on her hands instead or buy a used pair. AIBU to think he is being too stingy?

PFB post. Gloves for a baby? You know they’ll stay on for 2.5 seconds, don’t you? (If you can even get them on in the first place.)

I’m with your DH. Or just don’t bother. Babies just have really cold hands and we’re coming out of winter.

Peridotty · 22/02/2021 05:32

Lol. You’re right. We have a pair from h and m that are woollen and they just don’t go on! It’s impossible to pull them up so we kind of gave up with those. That’s why I want to buy another pair!! A pair that’s better designed for babies. I tried scratch mittens and she pulled one off on the way home one day.
The gloves I want are £15. My husband said that’s more than what he spent on his gloves.

How old is your baby?
Will they be outside much playing? Can you tuck their hands in their cosy toes when its cold. Have they any gloves that will do until next year?

I need more info before I decided if he's still stingy.

rainyskylight · 22/02/2021 05:33

Waste of money unless you keep for no.2.

Soubriquet · 22/02/2021 05:33

Buy the sleepsuits that have the built in scratch mittens and have them double up as gloves

starrynight21 · 22/02/2021 05:35

The socks sound ideal. As pp said, babies keep gloves on for 1 second and they're off . Don't waste money on things that just don't work.

Weepingwillow22 · 22/02/2021 05:37

I bought some for my 12 month old as he goes to an outdoor childminder but they were £1 for 5 pairs. £15 seems excessive.

ShopoholicIn · 22/02/2021 05:37

The best thing for gloves is socks for my one year old. She will pull everything out. Even earlier the mittens you buy for babies barely stay put, so i am with your DH.

PracticingPerson · 22/02/2021 05:37

I think socks would be fine, in terms of warmth, I found gloves just came off constantly!

Peridotty · 22/02/2021 05:42

She is 8months old. Won’t be playing in the snow as she can’t stand or walk yet. She likes to be carried by me in the carrier. Her coat doesn’t have mittens built into them. We went on a walk today outside and when we got back her hands were freezing! Am so worried she will get frostbite. Thanks for your replies about the socks being okay. Will try them first then. I’m happy and surprised to hear that he is not being stingy lol.

I don’t think he’s being stingy £15 for baby gloves is a lot but you don’t need permission to buy your baby some gloves. If you want them you get them x

autumncountryleaves · 22/02/2021 05:48

I agree with your husband, £15 for a pair of baby gloves is ridiculous - especially as they are sure to pull one off and it get lost within a few uses!

Sirzy · 22/02/2021 05:50

£15 for a pair of mittens for a baby?

blackcat86 · 22/02/2021 05:53

I wouldn't spend £15 on gloves for anyone! I bought a few pairs of cheap mittens on amazon that were about £1 a pair as a set. They work well, go on fine and are washable. £15 for something that will be sicked on, thrown on the ground, lost or simply taken off is obscene.

HOkieCOkie · 22/02/2021 05:53

Lol she won’t get frostbite, hahah you have to be in subzero conditions for a long period.

LizzieBirmingham · 22/02/2021 05:55

Regardless of whether or not the gloves specifically are necessary, do you have access to money OP? Or do you need to ask his permission before you spend anything?

BlaireauDachs · 22/02/2021 05:59

I put thick socks on my 7 month old's hands. We have baby gloves from my other kids but the socks stay on better and are much easier for me to put back on when she takes them off. They worked fine when I was taking her out when it was minus 10 a couple of weeks ago (her hands were also under the footmuff too)

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 22/02/2021 06:00

£15 = totally pointless
Yabu to have bought a coat for an 8m old that doesnt have the sleeves that folder over to keep hands warm - there's a reason those are so common.

Yes yes to just turning over the sleeve mitten things on her baby gro. No, they aren't only for sleeping in - ignore the marketing campaign calling them sleepsuits so people think they need to buy "day" outfits too.

Messyplayallday · 22/02/2021 06:02

Buy them too big and they will last for next winter. My DD can’t stand or walk either but plays in the snow, on the wet grass, in puddles! She’s in gloves for age 2 but isn’t 2 until 2022.

Sirzy · 22/02/2021 06:12

Buy them too big and there is even more chance of them being pulled off and thrown out of the pram!

PeggyHill · 22/02/2021 06:16

People buy so much brand new stuff for young babies and it's barely used. If you are well off and can afford to buy things and then give them to charity after just a few/ no uses then go for it. I'd do the same if I had the money. But if the money could be used elsewhere then don't waste it on stuff like this.

rattlemehearties · 22/02/2021 06:19

She honestly won't get frostbite. Don't be ridiculous. Keep her warm in other ways and use a blanket on the buggy.

MsSquiz · 22/02/2021 06:21

My DD is 14 months and we got her a pram suit rather than a coat, as they cover her full body (except face, obviously) and 90% of them come with mittens attached or fold over sleeves. Coats are cute, but only really useful when they're older

She still doesn't always keep the mittens on and socks probably work even better than mittens to keep her hands warm.

I wouldn't even attempt trying to put gloves on a baby, sounds like a nightmare and a waste of money!

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/02/2021 06:31

She won't get frostbite and that's ridiculous money.

But, why does your DH get a vote and not you? If I wanted to buy gloves, I'd just buy gloves.

Ginandplatonic · 22/02/2021 06:33

I agree that the gloves are expensive and probably pointless, but...it’s a pair of gloves. Wouldn’t you just go out and buy them, why do you even need his approval?
