Window open at night and it’s freezing

My DP doesn’t like to be hot at night, fair enough. But it’s -8°c outside and he has the window open, our bedroom is like an igloo. We still have the thin duvet on our bed so he doesn’t get hot, I have a blanket and a hot water bottle but I just don’t sleep well in a freezing bedroom.
So AIBU - it’s healthier to have the window open at night
Or AINBU - it’s winter!

I have the window open all year. Have you thought of having two single duvets, so can each have preferred thickness?

kowari · 11/02/2021 22:34

Is the heating on? Will he compromise at all, such as making sure the bedroom is cool, radiators off or window open but shut it before you sleep? Do you have warm pyjamas?

ineedaholidaynow · 11/02/2021 22:35

Have you got a spare bedroom?

Honeyroar · 11/02/2021 22:36

I can understand your point, but I’m like your partner. I think a fair compromise is the thick duvet if he’s having the windows open.

kowari · 11/02/2021 22:36

I agree with having your own single quilt

Honeyroar · 11/02/2021 22:37

Yes the single quilts is a good idea.

lazylinguist · 11/02/2021 22:37

We have the velux a little bit open at night throughout the winter. I'm sure it's healthier and makes us sleep better. But we have a proper thick feather duvet!

Whatisthisfuckery · 11/02/2021 22:37

I usually do but the ast couple of nights I’ve had it shut, first time in years.

7to25 · 11/02/2021 22:37

Single quilts don't help if the room is -8!

Gliblet · 11/02/2021 22:37

Personally I can't sleep without a window open (or if I do try to i wake up with a godawful headache and painful sinuses) but I keep the heating set to kick in if the temperature drops too low. I also have a huge thick duvet (and if DH complained about it I'd buy a separate duvet for him).

cerealgamechanger · 11/02/2021 22:37

Get yourself a heated blanket (a single size one for just your side of the bed)+plus the hot water bottle, etc.

ammary · 11/02/2021 22:37

I always have the window open even if just a crack regardless of the weather. Sometimes DH shuts it and I always wake up in a hot sweat.

It's cosier under the duvet when the room is colder I swear.

Honeyroar · 11/02/2021 22:38

I think you can actually get mixed duvets - different togs on different side.

userxx · 11/02/2021 22:38

Sounds perfect to me, I love to feel a breeze on my face whilst in bed, sadly my boyfriend doesn't. Fancy swapping ?

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:38

No compromise, I’ve had to wait until he’s asleep and sneak the window shut! I don’t mind it open most of the year but this is ridiculous.
We have thought about 2 different duvets, I’m just really dragging my feet at having to buy them plus new bedding when we already have nice stuff.

Neither side is BU. How open is the window? Half an inch or wide open? We have our window open a tiny bit even now. I'm like you, I feel the cold & my DH is a warm person. We have a summer weight duvet on, but also a quilted blanket which he generally throws off, & I have a knitted blanket on my side. I also wear full pyjamas & socks in winter. Personally I sleep better with fresh air.

Icenii · 11/02/2021 22:39

I'm like your DH. My DH has some lovely thick blankets and thicker duvet etc.

Honeyroar · 11/02/2021 22:39

What about a single duvet for you underneath the thin double duvet?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/02/2021 22:40

I love being snug in bed but with a cold breeze around my ears.

I do have a Spaniel for extra warmth.

I hate a stuffy room.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 11/02/2021 22:40

I wondered if this was my boyfriend posting Grin it's been so many years now I can't sleep with the window closed.
This is the coldest it's been for a long time here, so I've added a winter feather duvet on top of my summer down duvet.
He only sleeps over at the weekend, so he'll live.

Pinkfreesias · 11/02/2021 22:40

Is there s spare room you can send him to, maybe just while we're having such extreme cold weather?

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:41

I like the idea of same duvet but different togs on each side, might have to look into that. I wouldn’t mind so much if I was allowed a thick duvet but he also like to roll himself up in ours so I have no covers in our freezing room.

PurpleSproutingSomething · 11/02/2021 22:41

Oh and definitely no radiators on upstairs!

Ninkanink · 11/02/2021 22:41

Get the warmer duvet out for you to use, he can continue using the thinner one. Or one of you can sleep in the spare bedroom if you’ve got one. Wear thin cotton socks and you’ll feel much warmer.

I voted YABU as I do prefer to sleep with the window open and plenty of fresh air, even in winter. Luckily DH and I agree on this.

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:42

Spare room is now an office as I’m working from home.
