Window open at night and it’s freezing

My DP doesn’t like to be hot at night, fair enough. But it’s -8°c outside and he has the window open, our bedroom is like an igloo. We still have the thin duvet on our bed so he doesn’t get hot, I have a blanket and a hot water bottle but I just don’t sleep well in a freezing bedroom.
So AIBU - it’s healthier to have the window open at night
Or AINBU - it’s winter!

No heating plus open window = room will be as cold as outside

Oh my fucking God 🤣

NiceGerbil · 13/02/2021 22:00

Why wouldn't it be?

You open the window (properly open it per OP), the temperature of the room will reduce.

I don't get what's funny :/

Honeyroar · 13/02/2021 22:14

Yes it reduces, but not to what’s outside. As I said, my water next to the bed wasn’t anywhere near frozen. Yet the water trough at my stables outside had three inches of ice on it. How do you explain that if you’re saying the bedroom is the same temperature as outside?

nokidshere · 13/02/2021 22:18

I've not closed my bedroom windows for 10yrs at least lol (obviously when I'm home). DH is freezing when the heating is on 20° 🙄. We sleep in separate rooms.

Mind you, it was cold enough last night to have me reaching for a dressing gown at 3am for a quick loo trip.

Neither do I, I lived in a house once with single glazing that was practically falling out. No central heating. The only hot water was from the electric shower or kettle.

It was fucking colder inside than out most of the time.

I don't think people that have their windows open in this weather, have it open fully. If mine were open fully my bedroom would feel like the arctic! Mine is slightly ajar, and on a latch so it can't open any more than I want. It provides a slight breeze around the room but nowhere near enough cold air to make it feel as cold outside as it is inside.

Other factors should be considered too however. A pp asked whether people who sleep with their window open live in modern buildings which retain heat much better than Victorian homes etc. I can't speak for others in this thread but my flat is a newish build and retains heat very well. It's unbearably hot in the summer but I was fine with that compromise as I'd rather have a warm home than a cold one. I have triple glazed windows too. My flat warms up immediately when the heating is on and my radiators seem to retain heat for a very long time after the heating has been switched off, so it's always very warm. The bedroom would be stuffy if I didn't have my window ajar (the radiator in my bedroom is turned down) and I do like the sensation of fresh air as I sleep.

EBearhug · 13/02/2021 23:47

I live in an Edward isn't terrace. My window is either wide open or closed because it just won't stay ajar. But there are thick curtains in front of it so the room is cool, but not as cold as outside. It's certainly not as cold as my childhood bedroom with ice on the inside of the window.

EBearhug · 13/02/2021 23:48

Edwardian, not Edward isn't. Stupid autocorrect.

pangolina · 14/02/2021 00:09

We are incompatible sleepers so have our own rooms, I highly recommend it. I currently have 2 duvets (1x10.5 tog and 1x4tog) a thin quilt, and a hot water bottle...and my window open Smile

NiceGerbil · 14/02/2021 00:12

Edward isn't Grin

The thing is we all live in different houses and we all have different preferences. So what one person's house is like or how they like to sleep is not really relevant to OP.

The reason I think he's taking the piss is that I'm a radiator person and the fact he

Has a duvet over
Doesn't wake up in the night if OP shuts the window

Means it's just he wants it how he likes it

I sleep with no clothes and a sheet over my middle when feeling warm, DH has a thick duvet.

If I'm too hot I get nightmares and then wake up.

So he's a. Not making a concession and b. Being warmer doesn't actually bother him.

He wants to feel snuggly- sleep in a cool room with a duvet wrapped around. I get that. But it's a preference and OP is too cold and it seems to me he's putting his comfort above hers.

Sneachta · 14/02/2021 00:13

Would you wear a hat op? Id love the window open but the dramatic loud chattering of teeth and exaggerated shivering from H put a stop to that. He still wears a hat, sometimes a scarf! Seems to sleep better

NiceGerbil · 14/02/2021 00:13

I would love to sleep in separate rooms but DH would look crestfallen Grin

Now I'm perimenopausal by temperature is all over the shop. It's a pita tbh.

Jesus, do you live in an igloo?
lifeinlimbo2020 · 14/02/2021 09:47

@FortunesFave

I am like your DH....I literally feel trapped and miserable with windows shut. I have been known to happily sleep through gale force winds and rain coming in on my face as I lie beneath an open window.

But as others say, two duvets...

Haha. Same.
BoxitUp · 14/02/2021 10:34

ElizaLala What about what your partner needs?

He can sleep in the double bed in the other room, or in his own house. He's not without options.
