Window open at night and it’s freezing

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:32

My DP doesn’t like to be hot at night, fair enough. But it’s -8°c outside and he has the window open, our bedroom is like an igloo. We still have the thin duvet on our bed so he doesn’t get hot, I have a blanket and a hot water bottle but I just don’t sleep well in a freezing bedroom.
So AIBU - it’s healthier to have the window open at night
Or AINBU - it’s winter!

Oh and thanks Kitchencomposter too, just seen your post

LimitIsUp · 12/02/2021 23:45

And thanks Knittingaddict too (I am reading this thread most recent first)

WeAreTryingToHaveATeamsCall · 12/02/2021 23:46

We're also a household of "window open all year round" as DP is the warmest human on the planet - we have two separate duvets

Moonstone1234 · 12/02/2021 23:51

Dual control electric blanket. You can have your side on high and his side can be cold.

Best invention ever. Cheap to run too.

IdblowJonSnow · 12/02/2021 23:54

I couldn't cope with that OP. I hate being cold!
-8 is exceptional- can he not have it closed for one night?!

lifeinlimbo2020 · 12/02/2021 23:56

We have our window open too. And the ensuite window . We have a wool duvet. Same duvet all year. It's fab. If I were you tho I'd treat myself to a heated throw or an electric blanket underneath or a duel tog duvet, or all of them. The options are endless. Cannot abide a stuffy airless bedroom.

FlaviaSabina · 13/02/2021 00:05

I'm just at the start of the thread so don't know if this was mentioned, but my always hot DH bought me a queen size matress pad and a blanket that have controls that only heat one side for each control. So I can have my side turned on nice and toasty and he has his side turned completely off. I hope you find a way to stay warm, trying to sleep freezing is no fun.

Smallgoon · 13/02/2021 00:18

Cannot abide a stuffy airless bedroom.

Well it seems like lots of people in this thread prefer stuffy and airless.

PickAChew · 13/02/2021 00:32

Many in this thread think there is something wrong with you if you think a room with a closed window is airless.

NiceGerbil · 13/02/2021 02:26

This thread is bizarre! Who would have thought this would be so divisive Grin

I stand by my earlier comments, as a radiator person. That if he's sleeping with a duvet and doesn't wake up when the window is shut. Then he's not a true radiator. He just likes being snuggly. Trusts very different.

I find the lack of compromise not good. Two people are in the bed.

Also -8 is cold. I wouldn't want to sleep in a bedroom that was -8. I'm surprised so many are saying they can't see a problem Confused

NiceGerbil · 13/02/2021 02:28

The other thing I thought was

If -8 is fine as long as you have some covers

Why do we worry about the right rough sleepers and why is there a winter fuel allowance? A sleeping bag and a few blankets and all is well .

I'm a radiator and I'm sure I wouldn't enjoy trying to sleep in -8. I mean it rarely even gets that cold in the UK.

It's been-5 here and it's sodding freezing.

cherryolives · 13/02/2021 03:49

We always have the landing and bathroom windows open all year, it's far healthier.

NiceGerbil · 13/02/2021 03:55

The top of your house is -8?

Ok.

MountainPeakGeek · 13/02/2021 05:07

Ok.

Where do you get that idea from? Having a window open a little bit doesn't mean that the inside temperature immediately equalises with the outside temperature. It's -23C outside where I live right now. (Has warmed up considerably since the -34C of last night.) We currently have a window open slightly - and have done for hours because our wood heat isn't very controllable and it's 23C in here, which I find too hot and stuffy. Sure, if we left a window wide open (and had no heating) it'd drop below freezing, but not with a barely ajar window (just enough for a bit of air).
Window open at night and it’s freezing
lljkk · 13/02/2021 06:33

People are so different. I feel almost like crying with how painfully cold I would be in some of the scenarios described by others. How do you guys with freezing rooms cope in the day time; you must be sweating hard all day. I feel the same when I read about winter swimming, ice baths, or watch surfers in January north sea.

-About to put my cold fingers (from typing, in spite of wearing fingerless gloves) back under duvet until they warm up to a comfortable level again.

notanotherlockdownsurely · 13/02/2021 06:39

First we had competitive eating, more recently we had competitive temperature of the house and now we have competitive freezing
It's bloody ridiculous to have a window open when it's minus 7. If your house is normally aired it won't get 'stuffy' in the bedroom. My bedroom is never ' stuffy' and I , shock horror, also have heating on in the bedroom until I go to bed.
By next week it'll be warmer but right now tell him not to be a selfish arse

skodadoda · 13/02/2021 07:06

We don’t like to be too warm at night but find that having the bedroom door open at night is a good compromise.

Mumof3dogs · 13/02/2021 07:44

Get an electric blanket- will keep you toasty and he can have his 1/2 of the bed cool .
I love mine!

ChrissyCarol · 13/02/2021 07:45

-8 here. 7 tog duvet. Sleep naked with window open. Wouldn't dream of putting heating on as surely jt'd just escape out the window. Partner would like a 3.5 tog and window shut but that's not going to happen as I need fresh air or just feel suffocated. It's really toasty under the duvet to be honest. Only downside is getting up to wee in the night in Artic conditions takes some stamina but partner's very good about letting me warm my feet on him when I come back 😁

What about what your partner needs?
Taikoo · 13/02/2021 11:20

I wouldn't be happy with this.
He sounds very selfish.
I'd move into the spare room and leave him to it.
In fact, in time, I'd move out and leave him to it, on his own.

Smallgoon · 13/02/2021 11:54

So by this logic, having your window slightly ajar when it's -8 outside, means the inside of your room will be -8...

Honestly, I wonder how some of you get dressed in the mornings Grin

DenisetheMenace · 13/02/2021 11:56

You’re both reasonable. Sorry, that doesn't help does it Grin

NiceGerbil · 13/02/2021 21:27

Well yes if you have your heating off and a window is open then the temperature will be that of the outside :/

How is that not logic :D

And I mean log burner aside (!) most people don't have their heating on at night.

No heating plus open window = room will be as cold as outside.

Honeyroar · 13/02/2021 21:31

It’s really not as cold as outside with the windows cracked open when there are curtains and people breathing in the room. Otherwise the water next to my bed would have frozen all week. It feels like it’s been in a fridge, but not a freezer..
