Window open at night and it’s freezing

My DP doesn’t like to be hot at night, fair enough. But it’s -8°c outside and he has the window open, our bedroom is like an igloo. We still have the thin duvet on our bed so he doesn’t get hot, I have a blanket and a hot water bottle but I just don’t sleep well in a freezing bedroom.
So AIBU - it’s healthier to have the window open at night
Or AINBU - it’s winter!

Oh just buy the warm duvet and don't be a martyr. Buy yourself a leccy blanket whilst you're at it. You won't be going on holiday this year, so go wild and treat yourself. Or you could just wait a couple of days. It's gonna be 10 degrees on Monday.

Ninkanink · 11/02/2021 22:43

You don’t need to buy new bedding, just buy a double duvet and use one of your existing duvet covers.

pickingdaisies · 11/02/2021 22:43

It takes longer to fall asleep if your body is having to work to try and keep warm. I couldn't bear to be that cold. I think you need a compromise somewhere, if the window stays open then you need a thick duvet. Or keep the thin duvet and shut the window!

Karen138 · 11/02/2021 22:44

I have a similar problem. I've found the best way to deal with this is just set up a tent on your side of the bed, and put a nice warm sleeping bag inside it. problem sorted!

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:44

Bring on Monday Grin and here’s hoping for 10°

Just saw your update about him nicking the duvet. You need a shovel and a new patio

Norwayreally · 11/02/2021 22:45

This is so odd! Honestly never knew so many people slept with windows open when it’s -5 outside.

PicsInRed · 11/02/2021 22:45

Why is the answer here for the woman to be so cold - literally more than freezing - that she can't sleep, rather than the man simply sleep without a duvet on?

NewYearNewTwatName · 11/02/2021 22:46

window open household here too, when it's really cold it only open a crack, the room doesn't ever really cold. in winter I've been known to put a second duvet on top, it makes it really cosy.

just get an extra duvet.

Saz12 · 11/02/2021 22:47

OP, I’m with you! I don’t understand how having a runny nose from the cold is conducive to a good nights sleep. The only time I sleep with window open is at my in-laws insanely over warm house.

Could you just turn the radiator down to 1 or frost in your room? That’ll be way warmer for you!

And why have window open and heating on full blast? A big flash with the co2, surely....I open windows for a couple hours in the day in winter (most days).

Could you buy nice (warm!) throw / blanket that you can haul onto your side of the bed? Or buy yourself a nice balaclava and ski mitts...!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/02/2021 22:48

Hot water bottle.

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:48

@Norwayreally me neither, I feel like I’m camping. I never sleep well in a tent either!

Thanks for everyone’s tips for keeping warm, I’m already wearing the socks and warm pjs but think I might treat myself to an electric blanket!!

I'm sleeping under an open window and even now have to get the covers off on the night and remove my tee shirt. I boil in bed.

Ninkanink · 11/02/2021 22:48

We pretty much never close our bedroom window - only if it’s properly stormy outside. Neither of us can stand to sleep in a stuffy room and we’d rather snuggle up to keep warm. We’ve got three different duvets so we can use an appropriate tog for the warmth/cold.

FellowFlipFlop · 11/02/2021 22:49

There's nothing better than being in a cold room under a warm duvet. Still your husband doesn't get to make the room bloody freezing then hog all the quilt

JayAlfredPrufrock · 11/02/2021 22:49

Who has heating on at night?

RandomUsernameHere · 11/02/2021 22:49

That sounds absolutely ridiculous, I'd refuse to sleep in the same room as him!

PurpleSproutingSomething · 11/02/2021 22:50

Windows shut, pyjamas on and heating on. I think I'd suffocate. I haven't worn nightwear for years in bed.

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:51

On a slightly different note...I’ve never had to many replies so quickly Grin

We never sleep with a window open, what about mosquitos? DH likes the heating lower than me though, so I steal the duvet, the rule is: if he's too warm to have the heating on then he doesn't need much duvet. We have all the internal doors open though so it doesn't get stuffy

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/02/2021 22:52

I like quite a warm duvet in a cool room. But the window open in this weather is taking the Micky in my view.

Doesn’t really matter what each person does and doesn’t like though, there has to be compromise. The different duvets is a good idea but I’m not sure why what he says goes on the window front.

crumble82 · 11/02/2021 22:52

@PurpleSproutingSomething we don’t have the heating on at night, it goes off at 930 and back on at 630. I don’t like the room to be roasting but this is ridiculously cold

Grin This. When I saw your update OP my first thought was 'kill him'. DH tries to do the sausage roll trick as well but there is nothing that will stop me poking him awake if he's nicked all the duvet and left me freezing in the wee small hours.
magicstar1 · 11/02/2021 22:54

I have the window open all year around. We have two separate double duvets...4 tog in summer and 10 tog in winter so can wrap up separately.
I can’t understand you saying you’re not allowed a thicker duvet as your H likes to wrap himself up Hmm

YANBU.
