AIBU to think Covid has improved my life?

When I look back at my life a year ago, I am so grateful to be in the position I’m in now. But the changes wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for the pandemic.

Firstly I was furloughed for several months and able to spend more time with my kids. Homeschooling last March was tough but it made when the kids went back in June feel easier.

I was then made redundant but found a better job100% remote and more money. A situation I could only dream of before!

Throw in mortgage breaks, and less nursery fees and I’m more financially stable than before.

I used to have fomo but now I’m enjoying spending time just with husband and kids. Our marriage is better than ever as we now work at home together.

Zoom quizzes have me catching up with friends I’d not seen in a while and building better relationships.

I obviously have lost freedom and hate to see so many deaths but aibu to be grateful for what it has done to my life?

Read the room

That's nice OP. Maybe a little thoughtless to post though.

dementedma · 09/02/2021 20:15

Wow. Well, erm, bully for you!

shouldreallynamechangemore · 09/02/2021 20:16

I think it is nice to hear good news. Good for you, OP

SheRaTheAllPowerful · 09/02/2021 20:16

To be honest I’m happy to read this, it’s been a bit shit for us business wise, but I do feel slightly better that there are people that this has been a blessing for. Too much doom and gloom all round. Happy for you OP.

CaramelCandle · 09/02/2021 20:16

Not unreasonable. Nice to hear the positives in all this!

PinkFondantFancy · 09/02/2021 20:17

Probably one of those posts that you might want to delete on reflection....

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 09/02/2021 20:18

Op yes good for you. I'm sure there are quite a few people in your situation. Given how badly it has affected so many people on here and the wider world, it might be best to just be quietly pleased/ grateful.

Not unreasonable at all. You haven't had it easy but you're clearly able to focus on the positives in your life. That's a joy to read. I think a lot of us have shifted re "fomo" and a shift in priorities.

maggiemuff · 09/02/2021 20:20

Don't see what the advantage of a mortgage break was, this should only have been taken if you were not able to pay your mortgage. Not just a nice little payment holiday. You will now pay more interest on your mortgage. Glad you are pleased about all the children missing school, people's business's being destroyed and the people who have lost loved ones. But knock yourself out there and enjoy yourself. 🖕

ItsNotAlrightButItsOkay · 09/02/2021 20:20

I love a positive post. I think a lot of people are in need of that right now and hopefully this post helps them find some.

ReefTeeth · 09/02/2021 20:20

Same here.

I said to dh I can't imagine juggling everything again how I was pre-covid (working ft, 2 x school drop offs and 2 x seperate afterschool collections) and hopefully won't have to with WFH being an ongoing option.

Donoteatthekittens · 09/02/2021 20:20

I would be worried about my “100% remote” job being offshored to a cheaper country...

And your mortgage will still have to be paid back.

“If you’re thinking about a mortgage payment break, it’s important to understand that interest will continue to build at your usual interest rate during the payment break.
This means that the total amount of interest you’ll pay over the term of your mortgage will go up, increasing the overall cost of your mortgage.
As a result, your monthly payments at the end of the break will be higher.”

soundofsilence1 · 09/02/2021 20:21

It is not unreasonable to think it. It is however unreasonable to advertise it when so many people are suffering terribly.

Wow. You're grim!
converseandjeans · 09/02/2021 20:21

Lucky you - I'm envious of people who were furloughed first lockdown & got to concentrate on their children.

I think the current situation will be better for some people. For many it's harder times. I'm still employed but exhausted.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/02/2021 20:21

On paper my life has been “better” for it, but I would give anything for covid to never have happened, it’s destroyed so much for so many and I’m saddened to my core for the state this country will be left in.

shouldreallynamechangemore · 09/02/2021 20:22

ahhh now I understand the Dementor analogy

whenwillthemadnessend · 09/02/2021 20:22

Huhmmm. Glad for you but better write in a private journal and ham on here. Plenty of others are having a terrible time.

SuperCaliFragalistic · 09/02/2021 20:25

I think lots of people, who haven't been in crisis, have taken the opportunity to reflect and readjust their priorities and try to look at the positives. It's been very hard for others though so I think starting a thread like this is a little insensitive.

Hothammock · 09/02/2021 20:25

Same for me OP. It would be rude not to be grateful for these things considering how much people have lost.
Covid has partly been a result of poor human behaviour so hopefully we will reconnect with what is important and behave better as a society.

ItsNotRightButItsOk

And you life in a fantasy if you think anyone has put up this ridiculous post for any other reason than to wind people up. She is also a complete fool to think a payment holiday is an advantage, that will come back and bite her in the bum. Very naive.

Shaniac · 09/02/2021 20:28

Really i am much better off currently on furlough and dread when it ends and my monthly wage halves (which its going to.). Im glad your having a good time and dont begrudge you that. On paper my life is great right now but in reality my mental health is suffering and i want lockdown to end asap. That said you having a nice time doesnt effect me and yanbu to realise how lucky you are. People are going to be cunts to you though and tell you how you are happy people are dead and jobless and other nonsense you have never alluded to.

ilovesooty · 09/02/2021 20:31

I also can't understand how a mortgage break is an advantage and would be concerned about the future of your job.
