Actresses - Feel so cross - ruined by plastic surgery

569 replies

Thisisnotreallymyname · 06/02/2021 20:03

Feel so sad - been watching TV and why is it that women ( in the main ) feel the need to absolutely ruin their faces with fillers, Botox, face lifts, to the point where they look deformed, or like they are wearing shiny masks.
Felicity Kendal last night on Graham Norton, Fern Britton on Mastermind, Sally Thomsett on Pointless Celeb........
Do they not see what we see when they look in the mirror ?
I’ve nothing against PSurgery, but my God, please know when to stop !

IABU - they look fine
IANBU -they look awful .

On the other side however im glad theres an outlet for plastic surgery to be utilised and practiced so it can be improved for burns victims etc

It’s the other way round. Plastic surgery techniques were developed to treat disfigurements and other serious issues. These have then been adapted for cosmetics.

Boob jobs started out as reconstructive surgery for cancer patients. Botox for migraine and excessive sweating etc..

Madonna has sold out. Her amazing energy, creativity and wit reduced to “puffer” face cosmetic surgery posing, icy, really no different from Carol Vordemann advertising life insurance (ironic). It’s called losing the plot American style.

You rarely look younger with PS just like someone who's had PS

Ilovemycat13 · 07/02/2021 18:12

Why are we erasing all feminine words now???

Ilovemycat13 · 07/02/2021 18:12

@gnomeisland

Actors. Female or male actors.
Why are we erasing all feminine words now??
SoSadBaby · 07/02/2021 18:27

ilovemycat Because that’s the new progressive wokedom. If the “luvvie” proposers of this had more than 2 !brain cells to rub together, they might have noticed this.

Janegrey333 · 07/02/2021 18:45

@Seeingadistance

I saw Felicity Kendall on GN last night and was horrified by what she’s done to her face. It doesn’t make her look younger - it makes her look, well, deformed, to be honest, and older than 74. It’s so sad that she felt the need to do that to herself.
Her upper lip is doing god knows what. Horrifying.
Janegrey333 · 07/02/2021 18:46

Oh and I intend to keep using “actresses”.

lljkk · 07/02/2021 19:03

I have a gut feeling that it dimishes women to ban words like 'steamstress' or 'actress' or 'head mistress'. The underlying assumption is that "of course a female version must be inferior"

Isn't that buying into patriarchy to believe that female-special words are wrong? Oh well, is only way I can hear that prejudice against ess words. I guess 'girl' and 'woman' will get banned next for same reason.

You do know this is complete and utter bollocks, don’t you?

One of the hardest working actresses around is Judi Dench - over 80 and untouched face. Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Penelope Wilton - shall I go on?

but these are not beautiful actresses, they are character actresses.

That is ignorance in the extreme. Do you actually know who Judi Dench is? She is one of the greatest living British actresses - in fact, THE greatest. Meryl Streep is held in similar high regard for her ability. She is also beautiful and graceful. Penelope Winton is lovely too.
PinkyParrot · 07/02/2021 19:19

Well look what just happened with the Sutton Hoo film (The Dig, I think?) Carey Mulligan (mid 30s) was cast as the ballsy, eccentric, determined female part in a true story. Her RL counterpart was 20 years older, but producers, commissioners, casting directors, whoever, apparently weren’t happy with that.

The son of about ?10 had a major part in the film, if the mother had been 50s the son would have been 20+, would have reduced the options in the storyline so this might have been the reason - her brother was a handsome twentysomething, again wouldnt have been so many options if he'd been 40/50.

Janegrey333 · 07/02/2021 19:20

I suggest you look up “ character actors”. You need to be educated.

Graciebobcat · 07/02/2021 19:20

I use both words for female actors, but note that we no longer use the word "doctoress".

@willFOURbagsbeenough

The beauty industry stands to collapse if we allow women to believe their naturally ageing bodies are acceptable. Thats men losing money and that just won’t be allowed to happen.
This. With bells on

It’s based on a true story and the woman had her son when she was 46 so would have been mid-late 50s when the film is set..Nothing against Carey Mulligan but they could have used so many great 50-something actresses for that part, it’s so frustrating.

Judi Dench looks the age she naturally should but is still beautiful“

I agree: I think she’s improved with age. Those sparkling eyes do it, I think.

Frankola · 07/02/2021 19:47

I don't think you should be cross with any actress.

I think you should be cross at the industry they work in, because that's why the end up with cosmetic work. Industry pressure and being scared theyre "too old" to work

unmarkedbythat · 07/02/2021 19:53

Sad they feel the pressure but not liking the contempt shown to these women on this thread. Appearance policing is a shitty thing to do: you can express dislike of the systems that mean so many women face this pressure without being unpleasant about the women's individual appearances.

What makes you think Madonna has sold out? Could it not simply be that she want to look the way she does? That it makes her happy when she looks at herself? Just because some people don't like her appearance, doesn't mean that she doesn't. Given that despite the constant criticism she receives for her looks and lifestyle, she carries on, doing exactly as she pleases, as she always has, it seems to me she has done the exact opposite of selling out.
ElizaLaLa · 07/02/2021 20:31

I saw Helen Hunt in a film recently (I see you) and she looked terrible

I just googled that and she looks like Ted Danson's beast.

So sad, she was so pretty.

AllAboutHallowsEve · 07/02/2021 20:41

Perhaps Madonna is happy with her face. Her face, her choice.

But for a woman who built her fame and iconic status by sticking a middle finger up at conventionality, it is sad that she's gone the conventional route of doing everything she can to look like a 25 year old.

So this was posted presumably by a woman who assumes that cosmetic companies are headed by men. So much for feminism. We've had 2 UK PMs and women in space, but they don't run industry?

Heard of Estee lauder? Helena Rubenstein , Elizabeth Arden? Anita Roddick?

VinylDetective · 07/02/2021 21:32

Estée Lauder Group - run by men
Helena Rubinstein - defunct
Elizabeth Arden - run by men
The Body Shop - sold out to L’Oreal, run by men

Not a woman in sight any more.

No. She is still the same Madonna with her need to perform and take risks sexually, theatrically etc . It’s just that at 60 no one gives a shit. All her cool moves only work if you’re young. Hardly Madonna’s fault. She still doing what she always did but now looking good and having a younger boyfriend are different at 60 to 40.

@AllTheFloralCurtains

Pressure of society and Hollywood. Must be horrifically hard. Instead of pointing fingers and saying shame on them, we need to have shame on the society that causes it
This.
