Actresses - Feel so cross - ruined by plastic surgery

569 replies

Thisisnotreallymyname · 06/02/2021 20:03

Feel so sad - been watching TV and why is it that women ( in the main ) feel the need to absolutely ruin their faces with fillers, Botox, face lifts, to the point where they look deformed, or like they are wearing shiny masks.
Felicity Kendal last night on Graham Norton, Fern Britton on Mastermind, Sally Thomsett on Pointless Celeb........
Do they not see what we see when they look in the mirror ?
I’ve nothing against PSurgery, but my God, please know when to stop !

IABU - they look fine
IANBU -they look awful .

@lljkk

Don't hollywood men get a lot of work done, too?

fwiw, this guy does not look 88 yrs old (pic taken mid 2019).

His forehead doesn’t, the rest of him absolutely does.
Whattheactual20201 · 06/02/2021 23:18

I see this a lot with my job. One day I will do their make up and hair etc then a few years later I will be working another one is their shows and movies and they look completely different.. sometimes it’s very subtle and nicely done other times I do feel a bit sad at how much work and think it does become a mental health issue just like anorexia etc.

Tuscadero · 06/02/2021 23:18

Burt Reynolds had facelifts, Robert Redford has had a facelift. Kenny Rogers, Mickey Rourke, Michael Douglas. Axl Rose looks no stranger to botox.

They seem to feel the pressure later than their female peers but they often succumb too.

Gingersnaphappy · 06/02/2021 23:32

@oakleaffy

Was watching a History programme on you tube presented by a woman...What was so disconcerting was her frozen forehead with a tiny patch of frown lines in the middle..It was disconcerting.

Then there is the natural presenter of similar history programmes who is a jolly good sort, puts her back into everything and wears her wrinkles with not a care in the World!
Ruth Goodman.

We love Ruth Goodman in this house - I suspect she makes her own clothes too!
PandaVie · 06/02/2021 23:38

Yes that was a bit fascinating Llljkk. I have to say most of them did look better with the work. However they are static, made up photos.

I watched an episode of Loose Women a few years back and EVERY woman on the show had clearly had work done. Andrea the host looked about 17, and it was hard for her to look natural, have any expression or have any gravitas*. And she’s a journalist supposedly, not an actress. I thought it’s a weird competitiveness that’s helping create an even more toxic judgment environment for women. I thought the whole show was so fake I never watched it again.

*Nicole Kidman the same. Her face also looks like a boiled egg. Wrinkle-less, expressionless, but similar to a boiled egg. Not even beautiful anymore. Vacant.

That said the late Joan Rivers had buckets of plastic surgery and looked v glamorous on it - but she said she had always felt ugly when young - but she also wore lots of make up.

PandaVie · 06/02/2021 23:39

The thing is you’re taking a big chance too. There’s a good chance you could end up like Courtney cox etc.

tobee · 06/02/2021 23:40

I think it's been around since the dawn of Hollywood. The difference now is there's more techniques and more media, social and otherwise to compare everything.

I hate how the tabloids played it last night with Felicity Kendal last night.

LastTrainEast · 06/02/2021 23:43

@gnomeisland

Actors. Female or male actors.
Surely Actresses?

Male or female Actresses

tobee · 06/02/2021 23:44

I can't see it changing. We're all brainwashed into thinking older men = silver fox. Women = stay 20 forever.

Jessie Royce Landis played Cary Grant's mother in 1959 film North by Northwest. Cary Grant was only 8 years younger.

Angelina Jolie played Colin Farrell's mother in Alexander in about 2005. She's a whole year older than him.

Exactly Lasttraineast!

I don’t get what’s so bad in being called an actress. It’s a glorious title. Maybe ban the word woman too? We can all just be “men” Confused. These people are so up their own arses, basically darlink.

tobee · 06/02/2021 23:55

Probably the only thing that could change these perceptions is fulsomely advocating natural ageing 🤷🏻‍♀️

letsdolunch321 · 07/02/2021 00:01

These women need to think how will my hands and turkey neck look having had botox.

Felicity Kendall hands and neck both give her age away.

Saggingninja · 07/02/2021 00:01

@Fieldofyellowflowers

They can't win really. They get slated for getting work done. If they try to grow old gracefully, they get slated as well.
Exactly. It appears in the Fail all the time. 'Actress slammed for looking 'haggard'.' Followed by 'Actress slammed for plastic surgery.'

I always remember Maggie Gyllenhall (she was 37 at the time) saying she was told she was 'too old' to play the lover of an actor who was 55.

It's hardly surprising that actresses feel this intense pressure not to age.

JocastaElastic · 07/02/2021 00:10

Prompted by this post, I've just had a look at Felicity Kendal on Graham Norton's show, and I honestly think she looks great. She's always been very pretty and she still is.

ParlezVousWronglais · 07/02/2021 00:16

Pedantic and PC. We all know what OP means.

Yes very.

Fascinationends · 07/02/2021 01:47

It would be helpful if society stopped pretending 50 was young. It isn't - move on and let the younger people have their moment.

If someone wants to plastic their face, they can crack on, but at some point, accepting middle and beyond age is much more gracious.

grassisjeweled · 07/02/2021 02:05

Christie Brinkley looks AMAZING for her age. I'll have what she's had!

grassisjeweled · 07/02/2021 02:09

Nicole Kidman looks completely different Confused

Anordinarymum · 07/02/2021 02:11

When I was a child people had surgery if they had facial features which were abnormal such as very badly shaped noses as one example. This was generally done through your doctor and done on the NHS.

Now anyone can have anything done if they can find a surgeon or practitioner willing to do it. It's when they keep on having things done that it all becomes ridiculous, or if they don't need anything done and you see a photo of them actually looking worse than before they did.

People like Cheryl Cole and Michelle Keegan who are naturally pretty must feel pressured in some way, but why??

Those women on the 'Housewives of'...programmes all look ridiculous with their fillers and massive trout lips. You would think someone would tell them when enough is enough.

I thought it was a real shame when Anna Friel did that to her lips. She does not look the same any more and that is the real shame here.

tobee · 07/02/2021 02:12

"It would be helpful if society stopped pretending 50 was young. It isn't - move on and let the younger people have their moment. "

ChestnutStuffing · 07/02/2021 05:10

Angelina Jolie played Colin Farrell's mother in Alexander in about 2005. She's a whole year older than him.

I think that was partly intended to make Alexander seem younger than Farrell was when he played the role. Though she was still about 10 years younger than Alexanders' mother would have been when he won his first battle.

garlictwist · 07/02/2021 06:06

I'm turning forty this year and a bit sad about how my face is inevitably ageing but these women are a salutary lesson to me.

You might think a tweak here or there will help and be imperceptible but the fact is it isn't, and you end up looking weird.

Better to be naturally gaunt and old, I think.

MrsTidyHouse · 07/02/2021 06:38

Could we please refer to getting work done as "cosmetic surgery"?

The term "plastic surgery" should be reserved for patients who have reconstruction procedures to correct birth defects or to increase function after accidents or life-saving surgery.

roseyrose2020 · 07/02/2021 06:42

@MamaNewtNewt

I saw Helen Hunt in a film recently (I SeeYou) and she looked terrible, almost unrecognisable. It was so distracting and she could barely speak as her face was so tight. I feel sad that she felt she needed to do that to her face. I mean this is an Oscar winning actress, she should be able to get jobs without having to have surgery.
I think she was in a car accident. She hasn't actually had any cosmetic surgery but necessary surgery.
