Covid has made this website toxic

From last March to now there has been a preponderance of sanctimonious, patronising posts on here judging others and trying to depress people. It has just shown such a nasty side to people and imo the moderators of the site have been at fault for not having intervened to close down these posters.

Why did my post get deleted? I used a wink emoji to show it was all good! 😆

wonble · 01/02/2021 19:43

@VinylDetective

You said are we done now?

I said yes or yeah I am now & did a cheeky emoji.

I didn't realise that was being vile.

addicted2spaniels · 01/02/2021 19:44

I've been on and off this site for about 5 years and I've had my arse handed to me on a plate a few times.

I'm always just glad I don't know people who are that rude in RL.

Don’t know. It wasn’t me who reported it although it was addressed to me. 🤷‍♀️
wonble · 01/02/2021 19:46

Did it offend you though?

VinylDetective · 01/02/2021 19:48

Not in the slightest. I thought it was really weird. I’ve been really offended by posts I haven’t reported.
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 01/02/2021 19:49

At least Covid hasn't put a stop the the regular "MN is mean now, it used to be so supportive/full of humour/ quick-witted" in the good old days Grin

Every cloud...

wonble · 01/02/2021 19:52

Ok well glad it didn't as it wasn't my intention 😁.

But confused how it could be labelled as spamming, trolling, hate speech etc particularly compared to some things I've seen.

I know, like I say just weird. I’d love to know what offended the person who reported it and why MNHQ thought it merited a deletion. It’s a mystery.

I returned to MN in September after a 3 year break. It’s definitely worse than it used to be.

wonble · 01/02/2021 20:05

Me too! 😁

I’d forgotten about ODFOD.

I can imagine the queen using that retort. Can’t imagine her typing ‘vile cunt’ on an Internet forum.

Oh, I can. She's been in the job so long and seen so much shit and she's never broken character on public. She needs an outlet. She's probably the one who urges everyone to go NC. She's like "Seriously, just do it, do you know how much I wish I could ditch half of my fucking family???"
Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 01/02/2021 21:38

It's always been worse than it used to be.

That should become the site tagline to replace the dated "by parents for parents"

CountessFrog · 01/02/2021 22:57

Maybe, Geordie!

Grin

I think post 2016 and especially the past year, it is particularly true though. There were gear changes from an influx from penis-beaker, and the name change culture from hacking and journalists lifting stories, but the real rot has been the polarisation of debate and shutting down differing views, and it's not just MN, it's pretty much all of social media. Shades of grey have been lost from discussion. Censorship on other platforms seems to have reached crazy levels fot people not showing "rightthink"

The rot set in once people became hyper-sensitive and you had to spell out "Lighthearted". Being robust and sweary was always one of MN's charms compared to similar competitors. It's become less sweary, but more rude, and robust has become replaced by further rudeness. It was always there, but there is more of it, and more reasonable people are driven away because there's no point in engaging with certain types so the spiral continues.

I try very hard not to get personal with other posters, but it is cathartic to vent and swear about the present situation, particularly as I have lost personal space and have a constant audience of children. I can't bang on some music really loud or have a good sing with a sensory child in the house or a DH working in earshot. I don't have anything left to immerse myself in and other forms of release.
I can have empathy for people struggling in different situations to mine though. I found it extrordinary last spring when people were only allowed to worry about Covid and torn into for voicing any other kind of concern, large or small. Balance is creeping back in fits and starts. Anticipation or the start of another change seems to aggravate the tone though.

CountessFrog · 01/02/2021 23:07

Good post that, Bogroll

Ding Ding Ding

That post is totally on the money.
