Covid has made this website toxic

From last March to now there has been a preponderance of sanctimonious, patronising posts on here judging others and trying to depress people. It has just shown such a nasty side to people and imo the moderators of the site have been at fault for not having intervened to close down these posters.

OP posts:

It’s become utterly vile. There’s no view too cynical to hold and nothing that can’t be sneered at.

You cant call people vile & sneery for disagreeing with you. Well you can but then to state It’s the old adage “It’s not what you say, it’s the way that you say it” is a tad hypocritical.

🤣🤣

Pimlicojo · 01/02/2021 12:15

After the Sir Tom thread last night I contemplated leaving Mumsnet. It felt so unkind and I wasn't sure that I wanted to be part of it any more. And then I remembered Elderly Korean Lady. And other good things. There are good things and people here too.

wonble · 01/02/2021 12:18

@Gliblet they don't see it though 🤷🏼‍♀️

Once more with feeling, I’m not saying people are sneering because they disagree with me. I’m saying it because they’re sneering.
lockdownalli · 01/02/2021 12:27

AIBU seems pretty much the same to me.

I have given up wandering onto the Coronavirus board because there are people there with either very serious MH issues, or who are incredibly selfish, just bleating on and on about how they don't give a shit about the "pretend" virus, their right to hug their mates trumps all.

I don't come across anyone like this in RL. everyone I know is sick fed up of the restrictions but willing to keep at it for the common good. They are looking forward to having their vaccinations and trying to stay positive, sometimes in incredibly difficult circumstances.

It really is a parallel universe sometimes Sad

wonble · 01/02/2021 12:28

Don't you see how you are coming across as sneery though? that's my point.

By saying "once more with feeling" you are implying I'm misunderstanding you & I need to "listen" harder. I don't, I just see it differently.
Perhaps it's your perception that they are too cynical or sneery?

o8O8O8o · 01/02/2021 12:30

Everyone is under pressure fuses are bound to be short
but it's still good to talk, to try and find common ground and try to help and support each other

Of course it’s my perception. Are we done now?

Oh joy, there's another Captain Tom one popped up.

NobdieTheNob · 01/02/2021 16:11

@CountessFrog

Ive been here for 16 years and I’m inclined to agree with the OP. Also, I think the average IQ has fallen dramatically.
Nodding along to this.
UnityUnited · 01/02/2021 16:13

I haven’t read the Captain Tom threads. How on earth is he controversial?

Yup, just reported it. Hopefully it will go pop soon.
Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 01/02/2021 16:16

He isnt, but there seems to be a selection of MN posters who can turn the most innocent posts into something awful.

Typical bloody snooty attitude. I have been here many many years too, the real smart arses that bring down threads are long timers.
Lower IQ doesn't equal being a cunt or talking down to someone.
I have noticed new vile tounge posters but the cutting attitudes aren't a new thing.
Such a dickish comment.

UnityUnited · 01/02/2021 16:27

How vile.

CountessFrog · 01/02/2021 17:11

Happy to be called snooty, I’ve no need or desire to litter my own post with ‘cunt, arse, vile and dick’ in order to express a point.

Mumsnet was a little more articulate in days gone by.

OnlyTheLangoftheTitBerg · 01/02/2021 18:20

Mumsnet has always been known as the site where you could throw in a “fuck” or a “cunt” without moderation, or include it in your username, so the swearing has always been a feature. (Have a look in Classics if you don’t believe me. You could start with “I’m going to Mumsnet the fuck out of this chicken”, for example.)

Emeraldshamrock · 01/02/2021 18:24

Indeed, jolly good fellow.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 01/02/2021 18:30

It would help if people kept this constant spiral of negativity on the Coronavirus Board. You know, in the designated area that's been made specifically for it; the area I for one avoid because I don't want to read the constant catastrophising, Report Thy Neighbour ethics, despair over how long lockdown will last or constant complaints about 'selfish bastards' and policing of other people's behaviour.

Perhaps then they'd find the remainder of this very large site a little less 'toxic'.

strawberriesontheNeva · 01/02/2021 18:50

Yanbu

Teateaandmoretea · 01/02/2021 19:15

OP I totally agree it’s vile. I don’t post anymore and had been on MN since 2008.

Teateaandmoretea · 01/02/2021 19:25

Mumsnet was a little more articulate in days gone by.

Well not really. ODFOD used to be normal, then sensitive types stated complaining.

Waits for this one to be reported and deleted yawn.....

Pinkfreesias · 01/02/2021 19:28

It's the posters who clearly think they are above the lockdown guidelines, or want to know if we think they way round the rules they have found is ok, that get to me. And the posters who deliberately look to pick holes in someone else's post, even going so far as to look back at previous posts. Pretty low.

Sparklingbrook · 01/02/2021 19:29

I may have dreamt this but wasn't there some 'ODFD' MN merchandise? A tea towel or something?
