would you smoke if there was zero negative health implications and no social stigma?

I did smoke in my late teens and early twenties. It's been many years now, I would never ever do it again but I did enjoy it at the time.. having a nice meal, maybe a drink and then stepping outside into the crisp night air and enjoying a cigarette while looking up at the night sky and contemplating life (okay I'm romanticising but just indulge me here).
I know it also stinks and is an extra cost. But I was wondering, if there was no stigma attached and definitely no negative effects on your health, those around you or the air quality around you.. a 'healthy' cigarette as it were... would you? My husband (also smoked in his youth) says he wouldn't. But i think I would!

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/01/2021 23:13

Hmm looks at finger nails nope not yellow

gettingshitstraight · 17/01/2021 23:15

I look really young for my age and no yellow fingers. It does stink, I know.
The joy of a cocktail and a ciggie though.

londonscalling · 17/01/2021 23:17

Only if they were cheap too!

No. Given up for such a long time, doesn't appeal anymore.
Also, it only looks cool on the young and beautiful, it just doesn't look right on either the very young (school age) when I started, or in middle age and beyond.“

Fair point. Audrey Hepburn, cigarette holder, Yep (though think she died from cancer 🥴?)

Dot Cotton, fag hanging out of corner of mouth, not so much.

TopEndChops · 17/01/2021 23:21

Absolutely

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 17/01/2021 23:23

I wouldn’t. I used to be a heavy smoker.

But I would never want to be that addicted to something again, for it to have such power over me.

The expense
The smell

Ugh

SEE123 · 17/01/2021 23:25

All day, everyday. Alas, this is year 6 smoke free 🚬

Remaker · 17/01/2021 23:38

Wow I’m amazed by how many people are former smokers. I’ll add attitude to smoking to my growing list of cultural differences between UK and Australia! I’m in my early 50s. I know very few people who have ever smoked and they all gave up long ago. Has been socially unacceptable here for a very long time.

Come to think about it, almost all my friends who’ve moved here from the UK are ex smokers.

My father died of lung cancer despite having given up almost 20 years before. But for me, removing the health implications wouldn’t change a thing. It’s the infliction of stench and discomfort on everyone around you that makes it a big no for me.

SlopesOff · 17/01/2021 23:38

No.
I used to smoke. I wouldn't do it again because I woke up one day and looked at the cigarettes and realised I didn't want to smoke any more.

It really stinks. I wouldn't want to smell like a stale ashtray. Waste of money too.

BejeweledCrocs · 17/01/2021 23:42

Hmm maybe. I liked me and my mate nipping out and having an outdoors chat during nights out.

It also felt like a pause button during work or social occasions.

Tempted to take up imaginary smoking to see if I get the same benefits.

Ginfordinner · 17/01/2021 23:42

I don't think it is cultural differences. I think it is mostly mumsnetters who have smoked and would still enjoy a fag who have posted on this thread.

None of my friends smoke. No-one I work with smokes, and only two members of my family smoke. In my world smoking is a complete no-no.

Bellabelloo · 17/01/2021 23:46

Absolutely!! Can you make it so?!

RavingAnnie · 18/01/2021 00:02

Definitely. The only reason I don't smoke is it's bad for your health. I loved smoking, rolling your own. Everything about it. Sadly like a lot of things in life nice things are bad for you (and in this case others around you). 😢

cordeliae · 18/01/2021 00:03

I used to smoke herbal teas when I was younger! For me, it's not the nicotine that makes it feel good but the act of smoking, no matter what's inside it. Nothing can beat that feeling, makes me feel so free and powerful. God knows why🤷‍♀️

RavingAnnie · 18/01/2021 00:05

@MaskingForIt

I wouldn’t smoke because it smells, but if there was a legal, healthy, non-addictive and stigma-free way to take heroin I’d be on it like a shot (see what I did there).
Me too, had morphine in hospital once, it was bloody amazing. Can see how people get addicted to opiates. If you could experience that risk free would be lovely! 😊
ItwasmeIswear · 18/01/2021 00:08

Absolutely. Gave up 10 years ago but would light one up in a flash!

BenoneBeauty · 18/01/2021 00:09

Yes

wonderstuff · 18/01/2021 00:11

Wouldn't it be lovely. There are lots of drugs that are quite moreish that I'd happily take if there were no negative effects on my health! I'd certainly drink more wine if that didn't make me feel terrible the next day, probably indulge a bit of heroin to help me sleep and coke pick me up at the start of the day!

I certainly felt smoking was cool back when I was a teen and everyone smoked everywhere.

Happylittlethoughts · 18/01/2021 00:12

Oh god yeah ... I miss it . I'm just waiting til they take the cancer out ...or I reach 75...

Thepollonator · 18/01/2021 00:46

Hell yes!!

ReggaetonLente · 18/01/2021 00:50

God yes

Guineapigbridge · 18/01/2021 00:53

Yes I would. I loved smoking. Gave up in my twenties due to health

womanaf · 18/01/2021 00:55

Only if it wasn’t addictive. I don’t miss the ‘needing to smoke but being somewhere I can’t’ feeling.

FlyNow · 18/01/2021 01:07

No I wouldn't, I don't like the smell or the taste.

Its lucky, ciggies are one of the few things in life that I hate that also happens to be bad for you. Everything else that's bad for you I love.
