would you smoke if there was zero negative health implications and no social stigma?

I did smoke in my late teens and early twenties. It's been many years now, I would never ever do it again but I did enjoy it at the time.. having a nice meal, maybe a drink and then stepping outside into the crisp night air and enjoying a cigarette while looking up at the night sky and contemplating life (okay I'm romanticising but just indulge me here).
I know it also stinks and is an extra cost. But I was wondering, if there was no stigma attached and definitely no negative effects on your health, those around you or the air quality around you.. a 'healthy' cigarette as it were... would you? My husband (also smoked in his youth) says he wouldn't. But i think I would!

Absolutely. I only gave up in April adsene I think about it every evening, what you described was my smoking time, of an evening, in the garden, with a lovely drink. Bliss!

frazzledquaver · 17/01/2021 20:25

Constantly. (Ex smoker)

VinylDetective · 17/01/2021 20:25

@umpteennamechanges

When people say they 'miss it'?

Miss what?

What is it about it that you miss?

I genuinely don't get it so interested to understand...

My understanding is that nicotine does nothing for you at all...that it only feels 'good' once you're addicted because it's satisfying a craving. So what's the point at the beginning?

If you’ve never smoked, you won’t understand. There’s no point in attempting to explain.
PhryneP · 17/01/2021 20:25

Was going to say no, but if it was free as well as no health implications I would as putting cigarettes in my mouth instead of snacks would be better for my waistline

CherryRoulade · 17/01/2021 20:25

It reeks. You can smell a smoker from a long distance. It’s grim.
No, why smell like that?

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 17/01/2021 20:27

Oh gosh yes.

ThatDamnKrampus · 17/01/2021 20:27

Yes, I quit 9 years ago and still miss my morning coffee and cigarette in the garden.

I love the smell when I walk past someone smoking. I don't like smell of stale smoke which I couldn't smell when I was a smoker but really can now!!

MIL quit 30 years ago and apparently she still misses it now.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/01/2021 20:27

@umpteennamechanges no point explaining if you never smoked.

BashfulClam · 17/01/2021 20:28

The snell and taste are vile!

Ginfordinner · 17/01/2021 20:28

No. I hate the smell. I can stand outside and look at stars without feeling the need to smoke.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 17/01/2021 20:29

Fuck yes Grin

I fucking love smoking.

augustusglupe · 17/01/2021 20:30

Never and never have.
My mum smoked all my childhood and it put me off for life.
It repulses me

ghostyslovesheets · 17/01/2021 20:31

yes - gave up 11 years ago - miss it - often have the odd one when out - but also hate the taste, smell and how it impacts on my fitness

EdwardCullensBiteOnTheSide · 17/01/2021 20:32

No. I tried cigarettes a few times when I was younger and just never got what the big deal was, it did nothing for me!

DimidDavilby · 17/01/2021 20:32

Fucking yes I would. I smoked from 13-28, I've been given up 3 years and i miss it so much.

I used to use it so much as a help for my anxiety and anger issues and I havent found anything that replaces it at all.

Splann · 17/01/2021 20:32

No I wouldn’t. The smell is really bad. Plus I’d prefer not to quite literally burn my money.

My children have rarely seen smokers. They saw someone smoking on tv and asked why that person has a funny stick in his mouth. They really found it amusing. It’s only advertising that has made it cool. To unadulterated eyes it looks silly Grin

LubaLuca · 17/01/2021 20:32

Yes. I haven't smoked for decades, but I still feel like I want to every now and then.

cakewitch · 17/01/2021 20:33

No. And I was a 30 a day girl. Cant believe I managed to stop.

KatSueCurry · 17/01/2021 20:33

The smell is repugnant so it’s a no from me.

StuffYouAllInTheCrust · 17/01/2021 20:36

Absolutely! Gave up 12 years ago but on the very, very rare occasion I have a night out (one or twice a year Blush) I have the odd one and enjoy it so much. Though a couple of years back I decided to try one in the day time while sober and it made me so I’ll I nearly passed out, so maybe not! Grin

TweeterandtheMonkeyman · 17/01/2021 20:37

Yes, I bloody loved it 😭

MrsKoala · 17/01/2021 20:37

I like the smell. I often walk purposely behind smokers in the street. So the smell would be a bonus for me. When I smoked I always dated (and married 2) non smokers who said they loved the smell and the taste of kissing someone who smoked.

I only gave it up for ageing reasons. I noticed at 30, my skin looked grey and dull.

I used to get tonsillitis, chest infections and colds constantly - about 8 times a year. And 3 times a year I’d get it bad enough to need over a week off work sometimes with pleurisy or pneumonia. I knew smoking didn’t help but I didn’t think it directly caused it. But then I gave up and all of that stopped.

I haven’t smoked for 10 years and have about 2 little colds a year now and my skin looks way better. I only smoked 40-60 per week before but did it over 2 days at weekends.

If I didn’t have to have the above effects then yes I’d smoke.

Minikievs · 17/01/2021 20:37

God yes. Like a shot. I fucking ADORE smoking, it was my favourite hobby.

DenisetheMenace · 17/01/2021 20:39

Gave up nearly 30 years ago because we wanted children, haven’t smoked since.
If you could add no smelly clothes, no smelly breath, no smelly hair and no yellow teeth (which DH, never smoked, told me about), god, yes!

curtaincalll · 17/01/2021 20:42

I love having a cigarette occasionally on holiday when the dc aren't away with us. Especially in countries where you're still allowed to smoke in a bar or outside at the table of a restaurant. Makes me feel young and carefree for some reason. Reminds me of my youth!

I wouldn't smoke every day again though. Gave up before I turned 30 and when I look back the stink must have been appalling. Also would hate to be that addicted to something again. It wouldn't be the same today anyway, you have to go outside and freeze. There was a smoking room in the supermarket I worked in as a teen and that was the best! But the thought of all that stale smoke now Envy
