To be peed off with Tesco

My Tesco delivery was today. I had until 11.45pm last night to edit my order. I successfully placed my order at 10.30pm and received the order confirmation email. This morning only half a dozen items were delivered, which are the items I put in the basket last week when I booked the slot. Nothing I added yesterday has arrived.

I called to complain and there’s a recorded message saying due to technical issues if you added items to an order yesterday it wasn’t saved and you won’t be charged for the missing items. No offer of a replacement delivery. I can’t book a replacement delivery because there are no slots for weeks. No click and collect slots either. It’s literally the first day of lockdown and the first day of shielding, and god knows how many people haven’t received their food.

We’ve had a fortnightly shopping delivery for as long as I can remember - we don’t have a car. We use it mainly for heavy items - tins, frozen food, pet stuff, wine etc. Thus far, Sainsbury’s have been happy to take our money and not told us off for making use of the service.

Tescos have been great here. Through lockdown and for many years before I've had a delivery pass and have always booked my slot with an old order and then amended the basket the evening before. How else would I know what was needed for the week?
I did exactly the same last night for my delivery this morning and fortunately no problems.

GabsAlot · 05/01/2021 20:37

good to hear you got all your order today-will update about mine tomorrow

Covine · 05/01/2021 20:51

It's annoying but I do think it's the risk you take when you play the system by holding the basket.

The Tesco website literally tells you to do this: to put a few things in your basket to book a slot and then add your shop later. It's so they can coordinate deliveries by having the locations in the system in advance.

CaffeineInfusion · 05/01/2021 21:01

I'd put money on you not checking out your amended order properly.

I made that mistake myself a few weeks back.

You live and learn.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/01/2021 21:03

@IliveonCoffee

I wonder if there are now so little slots because everyone has done just what you have and held the basket with a handful of items, only to amend at the last minute...

Technical issues happen but why should someone lose out on their delivery because they've done exactly what you have.

As for people losing out on food, well it sound like its only going to be those that waited until the last minute...

Unless you think they should be cancelling these place holder orders....?

I dont think supermarkets had placeholder orders in mind when they set up their delivery systems...rather they thought perhaps the amendment function could be for that last minute order of bread, or mince. Not suddenly changing 3 bottles of gin to a full weekly shop.

WTF.

It makes NO difference to Tesco whether you put 3 bottles of whiskey in your basket 3 weeks out or regular shopping. It's not picked until after the cut off time - which is not 'last minute'. It's 'within the time in whine you can add to your order'. They're not standing at the check out 3 weeks earlier just waiting to see if you add bread or milk.
🙄🙄🙄

@SpikySara. I've had really good service from Tesco since February, the odd glitch, but nothing too terrible. I'm sorry you've had quite a big glitch. Keep an eye on the available slots as the odd one does pop up.

Try ringing them again tomorrow to see if there's any way they can help you. You can get around the automated messages if you're a bit canny.

Good luck

Did you not read the OP's post. Tesco have apologised for THEIR error.
User27aw · 05/01/2021 21:08

It was Tesco's error, my amended order went through fine and i got the email confirming the amendments. But the amendments somehow disappeared after confirmation.

Then it doesn't work as a system , as proved here.
safariboot · 05/01/2021 21:13

Well, our order had everything I'd ordered listed on the printed manifest, no problems there but the bloody milk didn't arrive! I bet it's still in its tray on the van, we buy enough cartons they're sometimes in the tray by itself. We've got milk for breakfast but now I've got to go out shopping tomorrow anyway. Grumble grumble so much for stay at home grumble.

PLay the system?

Don't be idiotic.

It's using an online shopping system the way it has been designed to be used.

Not benefit fraud. FFS

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 05/01/2021 21:23

@Wheresmykimchi it does work, it's worked for years, it's just had a malfunction - like many other online companies.

Wheresmykimchi · 05/01/2021 21:24

Why does everyone keep mentioning benefit fraud? I never equated that nor said it was wrong.

But it is working round a computer system and sometimes that will fail.

Not sure why people are being so dramatic.

But the things you actually had in your basket (hypothetically) came. Yes?

superram · 05/01/2021 21:30

@safariboot I’m glad it’s not just me. You used to be able to both be in the app but it now buggers it up.

Op is right it’s annoying and I’d ask fir a £5 goodwill gesture but nothing else. I find Tesco customer service excellent-so much so when my chicken wings didn’t arrive in my Christmas order despite being charged I didn’t ring and ask fir my £1.53 back....

Covine · 05/01/2021 22:01

Yes they're usually fantastic. I've tried Morrisons (absolute shite) and Sainsbury's (give you a voucher by way of refund, so a delayed payment to themselves rather than an actual refund), Asda (sub hell) , Ocado (ludicrously overpriced for the quality). Tesco beats them all hands down in terms of delivery provision normally. Sounds like they had a major glitch.

Covine · 05/01/2021 22:03

But it is working round a computer system and sometimes that will fail.

It isn't "working round" anything. They tell you to do this.

Tunnocksmallow · 05/01/2021 22:12

I have had this happen when ordering from Tesco. I’ll have a delivery once a month, sort my basket, book the slot, and add/delete items as needed. But when I do it the day before, I’d say 8/10 I don’t get the items I add. And this was even before the pandemic. It’s obviously some kind of glitch in the system, so I try not to do anything the day before now.

Oh I picked up a click and collect this morning and assumed I hadn't checked out properly as it was half the amount I normally buy so you've solved that for me.
Sinful8 · 05/01/2021 22:43

@ShirleyPhallus

It’s shit of them but then you were silly to leave it til the last minute to amend your order.

Errrrmmmmm but that’s literally how the system works, usually?

Do you think the day of an announcement of nationwide lockdown counts as "usual"?

Or one of those unusual things

Timona · 05/01/2021 22:48

Why did you ‘laugh out loud’ mid sentence? Is it a tic? I don’t want to discriminate.

Geez, there are a lot of dicks about aren't there!

LastTrainEast · 05/01/2021 22:51

Normally it IS fine to wait until the last minute, but from now on I'll make sure most of the stuff is in the order and checked out early on just in case.
It's a disaster if it happens and there really isn't much they can do to make up for it.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/01/2021 22:54

Just to mention the number of people who book a slot with a bottle of Champagne and then never add anything to their order is very annoying. It has to be picked, assembled for the right slot, placed in racking and then stored until the next day, returned to the shop floor and the idiot refunded.

That's a waste of time and effort nobody needs.

PolarExpressislate · 05/01/2021 22:54

Morrison's and Iceland have slots, also ring Tesco Customers services and tell them you are shielding, she will put you on as a priority customer so slots come on for you.

LastTrainEast · 05/01/2021 23:02

There was nothing immoral about putting just a few items in to book the slot, but the idea of putting in £40 of champagne never made sense anyway. You can check out with one tin of beans.

Obviously with the system under this much stress it now makes sense to fill it up with stuff you really need early on, but there's no right and wrong here.

VeniVidiWeeWee "and the idiot refunded" Tesco don't charge the customer until the day because they are still allowed to change orders up until the night before. So I'm not sure what you're saying.
