To be peed off with Tesco

My Tesco delivery was today. I had until 11.45pm last night to edit my order. I successfully placed my order at 10.30pm and received the order confirmation email. This morning only half a dozen items were delivered, which are the items I put in the basket last week when I booked the slot. Nothing I added yesterday has arrived.

I called to complain and there’s a recorded message saying due to technical issues if you added items to an order yesterday it wasn’t saved and you won’t be charged for the missing items. No offer of a replacement delivery. I can’t book a replacement delivery because there are no slots for weeks. No click and collect slots either. It’s literally the first day of lockdown and the first day of shielding, and god knows how many people haven’t received their food.

Just to mention the number of people who book a slot with a bottle of Champagne and then never add anything to their order is very annoying. It has to be picked, assembled for the right slot, placed in racking and then stored until the next day, returned to the shop floor and the idiot refunded.

That's a waste of time and effort nobody needs.

This is actual bullshit. Tesco explicitly tells its customers to do this. No one is getting bottles of champagne and putting it in crates and ringing a transaction through physically two weeks before a home delivery is scheduled.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/01/2021 23:08

@Lasttraineast

The order is never collected. Who knows why?

Perhaps they just fancy making a slot unavailable for those who might need it?

Covine · 05/01/2021 23:09

I mean, just think about it. Where is Tesco storing all of these home delivery crates empty but for a bottle of champagne for weeks on end?

Answer: they're not.

PolarExpressislate · 05/01/2021 23:10

@Bookworming

So how would you police that *@VinylDetective*? How would you ensure that slots only went to people capable of not doing their own shopping?

I love these "but you shouldn't do that" nonsense, when it can't be policed!

I've
had an annual pass for three years! So am I more entitled! No it's first come first served!

Because the Government register are sent to every supermarket with a list of everyone vulnerable and unable to shop in person.
VeniVidiWeeWee · 05/01/2021 23:10

@covine

My apologies, I was talking about click and collect.

VaultedRoof · 06/01/2021 00:02

@IliveonCoffee

I wonder if there are now so little slots because everyone has done just what you have and held the basket with a handful of items, only to amend at the last minute...

Technical issues happen but why should someone lose out on their delivery because they've done exactly what you have.

As for people losing out on food, well it sound like its only going to be those that waited until the last minute...

Unless you think they should be cancelling these place holder orders....?

I dont think supermarkets had placeholder orders in mind when they set up their delivery systems...rather they thought perhaps the amendment function could be for that last minute order of bread, or mince. Not suddenly changing 3 bottles of gin to a full weekly shop.

Tesco tell you to placehold and come back later - it is what they planned for. What they didn't plan for is everyone coming onto the site at the same time in a panic because a national lockdown had been announced.

The idea that there something morally wrong with placeholding online shopping is laughable

notdaddycool · 06/01/2021 00:09

It does annoy me that you can no longer edit your shopping list, mine still has baby formula from 5 years ago. If you could put your main things on there you could get all your regulars in straight away and be much closer to what you need.

OP try amazon...

SleepingStandingUp · 06/01/2021 00:12

@SpikySara if you're shortlisting can then, you should be able to get a priority slot, you still might have to wait a few days but you will at least get one

SleepingStandingUp · 06/01/2021 00:18

@Wineinthegarden

I don’t understand the holding the basket thing with 6 bottles of champagne etc. Surely your shopping is pretty much the same every week so put what you need in the basket then add any extras as needed. Then it’s not a disaster if the changes aren’t made as you’ll get your standard weekly shop?
I tended to hold mine with baby food, as I at least needed that but I don't always have the time to load everything on when I was holding a slot and my shop changes each week. It makes no difference as long as you remember... It's not like Tesco pre order 100 extra bottles of champagne. Of they run out it'll just tell you when you log on or they substitute it at delivery
BunnyBoilerRhian · 06/01/2021 00:19

I got all but 2 items on my cl8ck and collect today.
I booked my slot 3 weeks in advance as per usual. I've been doing thus for 2 years possibly longer. I always chuck in my basics bread, milk, chicken, tea bags etc then 24 hours before add the bulk, as I know at that point what I actually need. This is exactly what Tesco tell you to do.

So yesterday Ok at 4pm I added the bulk of my weekly shop to my basket but then at 10pm real8sed I needed squash and the soap so added that in too.

It was all there except the squash and hand soap added at 10pm at the time Tesco said there was a surge in website use. I'm in Wales not England, so although the website was obviously affected by the surge, there was no shortage if supplies here in Wales as no sudden surge as we've been in lockdown since 20th December.

I think it's really funny that some people think we're "playing the system" using the website exactly as Tesco suggests.
Even before Covid I'd have been hard pressed to find a slot in less than 7 to 10 days in advance. There's no way that far in advance do I know if I'm working away (pre Covid job loss), which of my teens/young adults will he at home or away with work/college or inviting boyfriend/girlfriend to dinner. I literally cannot do my shop more than 2 or 3 days in advance at best. Yet you need to grab your slots when released. 3 weeks in advance.

Me and my partner work for Tesco I’m currently on maternity. He comes home exhausted and stressed he’s been shouted at sworn at and spat at. I understand peoples stress but they have over stretched the staff/pickers/van loaders all through this with very very little thanks. They are having to offer services that aren’t always do able people panic and take slots they don’t need the supermarkets are over whelmed.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 06/01/2021 01:19

@buggy1720

Him and me both. But this is MN and who cares about retail workers?

But, some thoughtful people have bought us biscuits, chocolates, and beer. Not all are twats. Although one of the managers was assaulted today.

Yeah there have been some nice people I will say that. I feel for you I really do retail workers still seem to be treated as badly as they always have even through this. Makes my blood boil.

thisislovelyme · 06/01/2021 08:02

This happened to me too - all my basics arrived but my last minute changes (actual food for meals as had just done weekly meal plan) had been missed. But I am so grateful to Tesco's - they have been a lifeline this year, normally really reliable, lovely delivery people and v organised click and collect. So I'm letting them off this one hiccup. DH off to Booths this morning.

VaultedRoof · 06/01/2021 08:16

Because the Government register are sent to every supermarket with a list of everyone vulnerable and unable to shop in person.

Wow, so every supermarket in the land has an up to date list of every person currently isolating at any one time? Hmm
And of every single parent family with multiple young children who don't see their other parent?
And of every other conceivable situation which might mean someone cannot get to the supermarket safely in covid times? Wow Hmm

Bookworming · 06/01/2021 08:43

@PolarExpressislate are you sure about that? The government has sent my Morrisons a list? I really don't think so!

Ridiculous!

I am full of admiration for the Tesco delivery service. I am in NZ and get my 90 year old Mum's shopping delivered to her - the drivers have been lovely, kind and helpful to her. I am so grateful to be able to get her shopping in this way.

The first lock down Tesco was sent a list of people who had been sent a letter to shield I know I work there but who knows this time! However means nothing because they can’t control or police the website as people have said it’s impossible. Anyone can ring head office and claim they are vulnerable.
The whole point of online shopping is to get your slot and add to it as and when that’s why your given so long to check out. You aren’t charged until the shop is picked and sent through the system incase items aren’t available. No ones playing the system online shopping is to make life easier if you have a young family or you don’t drive or can’t get out. It’s not picked until the day it’s due so it does no harm doing it that way.Ultimately systems sometimes fail it happens it’s just as frustrating for the staff as it is customer.

GabsAlot · 06/01/2021 11:48

all arived here today and thankyou to all the drivers and shop workers we woldnt survive without you

Quite.

Total tosh.

Wheresmykimchi · 06/01/2021 12:34

Just to clarify for the many people who have jumped on the bandwagon.

It was me who said the way it works is playing the system. Not tha there is anything wrong with doing it or that I think people shouldn't. But putting in 23 boxes of crisps when you won't be ordering that is not using the system correctly whether Tesco tells you to do that or not! I've never seen so much fury and random jumps to benefit fraud in all my life!

SoupDragon · 06/01/2021 12:34

It was a list of officially shielding/vulnerable people. Not just those who would find it a little bit tricky.

Brighterthansunflowers · 06/01/2021 12:39

It was well publicised in March that a list of people shielding was given to supermarkets to enable them to prioritise the most vulnerable for delivery slots. I think I remember reading the supermarkets were only allowed to proactively contact people on the list if they were an existing customer though.

If Tesco tells you to do it, then it is using the system correctly. It's Tesco's system, so Tesco would know.
Wheresmykimchi · 06/01/2021 15:01

I get that Geordie but if they do that , mistakes will happen. Thats all I said.
